Jim,
Got a new water pump, hoses and thottle body plate but still waiting on 2 gallons of green stuff. If I can get some locally, I'll hang on to what I have on order. Think this is doable? I don't want to tie up the lift the whole day. Let me know.

Rich, Yes I think we can do it in one day. I have some anti-freeze that will work for you.

I am waiting to hear from SC also. He wants to do front suspension work so the lift would be available for the water pump and hoses work.

Any one else???:occasion1:occasion1

Cool.

I will have the heaters on and the beer cold at 0800 (8AM).

Is that early enough? If you want to start sooner, I can do that.

Now we need some supervisors. Come on up.

I will be domonstrating the neat new Craftsman wrenches I got for Christmas.

I'm an early guy, if you want to do 8:00, I can do that. I think I have a full day in front of me.

Doesn't look like the lift will be available for any rear suspension work - I'll wait for the next maintenance day. Jim, this will give us a chance to talk about what I have in mind.

Rich, if you want a hand with the water pump let me know. I'm an early riser as well.

What do you need to do for the suspension? May be we can knock out both.

Yun, thanks for asking. What I want to do is the next step in leveling the rear ride height of my Z. I'm not in a hurry so it can wait.

These last few months I've been working on my garage and so my Z is in a friends house in Mt. Airy. I'm not even sure I can get my car down his driveway.

Thanks again.

I don't think replacing 4 shocks would take that long - 3hrs?
Upper control arm can be replaced just with a jack.

Happy New Year to us all!:occasion1

I was out in the garage this morning. It got so warm out there I had to take my jacket off and turn the heaters off! I am all ready for Sunday.

Glad to hear that you are coming up Scott. We can do your shocks when ever it works for you.

I just tried some of the new wrenches that I got for Christmas. Really cool; racheting open-end wrench!

Hey Phil,

If we set up a "header install", could you come by and supervise?

Happy new year!

Bob, your friend is welcome as are you.

I don't know the end time, but however long the jobs take. If we get done early, I have picked a nice local area cruise to do some road testing. Lunch will probably be pizza. Some times we go out for dinner afterwards. But the schedule is very flexible. People come and go as necessary.

Even if you aren't in need of maintenance right now, come on by to see a fine gathering of ZR-1's

Phone number at the garage is 443-244-1347. Call or email if you need directions.

If you get lost we will send out a ZR-1 search party for you!

Jim, is the heater in good working order?
Forecast in the morning calls for 20 degrees F with 24 mph NW winds.
I'm sure David would appreciate it if the garage was nice and toasty when he rolls in at 10:00.

Jim, I've got to modify my plans. My brother has a tree in his back yard that the wind tore up last night. I haven't seen it yet but he needs a chain saw and some help. I'm heading over to his place now. If it turns out not to be too big of a deal, I'll be over later...

Thanks to everyone for coming out on such a cold day and helping out. When I went out to the garage at 0730, it was 17 degrees outside. With the heaters running we got the garage up to 56 degrees.:dancing

We had nine people join in the fun. Great time. It was nice to have Ricky come all the way from NJ just to hang out with us. Or maybe he just wanted to see what a ZR-1 looks like since he has had his in the shop so long.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/p...y/DSC02966.jpg

Yun (SecondChance) got his right front control arm replaced as well as replacing all four shocks.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/p...y/DSC02948.jpg

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/p...y/DSC02957.jpg

We were not as successful with Rich's water pump. Removal went OK once we found that one last bolt that attaches to the TOP of the water pump:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/p...4withwords.jpg

But then we realized that the replacement water pump was not going to work because the impeller sticks out too far towards the engine. Even before we installed any bolts, we noted that there was contact between the impeller and the block.

Maybe Rich can give more details about the replacement pump.

Thanks Phill for the coffee run. Thanks Ricky and David for the pizza. And thanks Lyndi for the Mac & Cheese. The beer was cold and the friendship was wonderful.:occasion1

Hey, no problem.

Here is the report:
1. Metal to metal noise when coming to stop has been eradicated.
2. Slight wandering also has been exorcized.
3. Car no longer bottoms out over speed bumps and definately feels more stable at high speed.

However, steering wheel is a little off center. New upper "A" arm seems to have affected wheel alignment. I might pull one skinny shim towards the back, at least, until I replace front tires.
It was great to see old friends and meet new (you Aurora40 and your friend). Well "seeing you" is more appropriate since I have been exchanging posts with you.

Rich. NOS water pump for $274!

Thanks to everyone for their help. My worst fear was realized when we went to install the new pump. When we put the new pump in place the impleller was firmly seated against the block and we had about 1/8 inch of a gap between the pump housing and the block. No gasket in the world would have taken up that gap. Also, the mating surface of the new pump wasn't even machined as the orginal pump was. Had to leave my car at Jim's until I can track down a new pump. Well, it was a live and learn for me today. Sorry I tied up the lift guys :o Anyway here are some pics.

Mrs Voter = Lyndi. She enjoyed making it for us. Her comment was: "Let'em hang out in the garage and throw food in the door every now and then."

Great news about the car's handling! :dancing It is not suprising that the alignment was affected based on the condition of those bushings.

Also thanks for the extra parts. They will be available to anyone who needs them in the WAZOO Parts Inventory/Cache.

Jim

Thanks for being the "keeper of future nonperishable parts".
I propose, with your approval of course, that we replace parts with new (i.e. Rich's water pump) as long as they are available and relatively cheap and stash away serviceable parts for future. I have thrown away so many parts, new and used, sometimes simply because I no longer owned the car and learned of regrets.
especially parts for LT5, sooner or later, will become very tough to get. If we can't make a fortune on the car, may be we can make fortune on the used parts 20 years later!

Thanks Jim for hosting another excellent ZR-1 maintenance day event and a special thanks to Lyndi for fixing us up the Mac & Cheese lunch.

Shame about Rich.... I have heard of some of these Water Pumps not being correct, but not for years!

Damn Napa! Congrats to Yun! Too tight to help him out and he did it with precision too.....

2 weeks before another Maintenance day and maybe we can do the Red 90's Trans Jim?

Thanks for hosting Jim!

Yes, Thanks Lyndi for the Mac & Cheese, it was great! Thanks Jim for all the help and the use of garage and propane! Oh yeah, and the loner car too :o, drives great
Thanks Phil, well valuable lesson learned for me, no rebuilds. If David strike out with George and I buy a pump, I may try and disassembe the old one, see what is involved in rebulding one of these.
Good job Yun, at least you we successful.

Rich and/or Bob,

How about starting a thread in the tech section about that water pump. It was clear to me from looking at it, that the water pump we tried to install was not a "rebuilt" water pump. No part of it was an original casting. It was a knock-off copy, poorly done. Many other people could benefit from our experience.

I was so wore out from crawing under the hood I forgot to snap some pictures of the other pump.

Bob, can you snap a couple (front and back) and email them to me rmuhr1@verizon.net. Once I get my old pump back from David, I will clean up and snap some of the old pump and do a side-by-side in a thread.

Re: Try Again - Maintenance Day in Westminster, MD - 3 Jan '10

The rest of the story....

When Rich and I got my '90 out for Rich to drive home, the left front tire was flat as a pancake due to a nail. So we swapped out the wheel with one of my 1993 spare set. So the "high end" loaner car looked kind of funny with 3 '90 wheels and a shiny sawblade.

Jim
