Mercury DOHC 4 valves per cylinder V12 outboard

1 Attachment(s)
Saw a picture of one of these from a friend who attended CES. Hmmm...Mercury Marine DOHC 4 valves per cylinder, naturally aspirated engine--where have I heard that before? This one is an outboard, a V12 no less, displacing 461 cubic inches (7.6 liters) and making 600 horsepower. Now, when I was wrenching on Mercury outboards in my teens it was usually on a 4 cylinder 50 hp or 60 hp motor one guy could lift off the transom. This new one weighs 1200 lbs. And it has an innovated steerable lower unit (gear case) so the motor itself is stationary on turns. Anyway, just thought you might like to see more engine innovation from our favorite motor maker. Apologies if it has been posted before but I couldn't find it here; it actually first came on the market in February 2021, so I am a bit late to the party on this but I hadn't heard about it and really liked it. Oh and the price for one: $85,000. (Attached is a picture of a boat with four on the back; there is a video you can find of a 37 foot boat with two going 65 mph). Probably not going to drop one in my restomod Corvette.

Here is a link to a brochure on the Verado as it is called:
https://mercurymarine.widen.net/s/qs...12_feb_22.html and there are many videos on it. --Bob

For you know, when 8 cylinders is too few, and six outboards is too many!

Ha Ha--so true. Just think of a 37 foot boat with 1200 horsepower or a fifty footer with 2400. One video I saw showed the 37 footer doing almost 70 mph and I believe I saw somewhere that the one with four pictured was a 50 footer that could do close to 90 mph. Some interesting videos out there if you Google these engines. --Bob

Off Shore boats
Sutphens, Fountains, Cigarettes etc
It's not un-common to run well over 100mph
these days!!! And, that's NOT an Off Shore racer, the race
Cats are around 150 (maybe more...) now! V hulls not much slower!
You don't wanna buy the gas to run one....
(or water ski behind it...)
You're probably not gonna be the most popular guy
at the marina either.... screw 'em! Especially the blow boaters....

I'd love to hear that at 7,000 rpm.

A poster about the boat that was next to the Museum's own '95 ZR-1, from our 2014 trip to The Mercury Museum and Mercury Racing.--Bob
