Re: 8 cams are better than four!
I probably will see if I can clean up the old one and get it working again, just for the hell of it. But for a car I plan on driving a lot, I felt better about installing a new one. One of the motor housing bolts is missing and isn't in the door, which means someone has been in there in the past. Probably for the exact same issue. The housing itself doesn't fit flush any more either.
So Ecklers just got my first order, and I'm calling Marc tomorrow morning for my second - water pump, tensioner and maybe a tune. Too bad he doesn't have a tensioner in stock, so it will take a bit longer to get mine rebuilt. Today's project, determine the prom currently installed, pull the tensioner and the water pump. And since the door panel is off, I'll take a shot at cleaning it to see what it takes. |

Re: 8 cams are better than four!
Yesterday work interfered with work. I had to deliver something for a client, thinking it would take a couple hours at most. Eleven hours later and I finally finished, never had a chance to get into the garage. Not my favorite way to spend a Sunday. And to top it off, Ecklers is out of stock on the window regulator, with nothing until late November. I can't wait that long, so I either find one locally or start hacking the motor on the old one. Maybe tonight I'll just sleep in the garage.

Re: 8 cams are better than four!
I got plenty of garage time last night, but finally cried uncle around midnight. The serpentine belt and tensioner were out in about 10 minutes and I thought, this is really an easy job. But 2.5 hours to remove 16 bolts and the pump wouldn't budge, making me think it was glued on. Then I finally spied that bastard bolt between the power steering pump and the alternator, hidden under an inch of crud. Getting that one loose was a challenge by itself, and then the water pump fell off like it should. Problem is, it's still attached to the lower hose and no amount of blood, sweat or swearing would get that hose off. It's stuck on there and I simply can't get my hands in there to get any leverage to get it off. I even donated blood, just like you're supposed to. At the end of hour 3 it was closing on midnight and I called it quits for the night.
Any hints/tricks to getting that hose loose? It's ridiculous that a hose has me stopped at this point. |
Re: 8 cams are better than four!
Take a single edge razer blade and cut hose length wise over coupler. Use flat screw driver to raise edges of cut hose and remove hose. Replace with new hose ;)

Re: 8 cams are better than four!
After digging so deeply into the front end of the engine, it's pretty apparent that lots of stuff like the tensioner, water pump and hoses are original. So I think I'll be going with new hoses, just for the peace of mind. Thanks for the offer though, appreciate it.
Got lots of bolt cleaning to do too. Some were downright crusty when they came out, and it looks like a couple get into oil passages? The oil that came out smelled burnt too, so an oil change is in the cards. Let's see, I planned on a water pump and tensioner when I bought it. Now I've got a window regulator, hoses, oil change and misc vacuum connections too. Then I noticed the driver's seat "wings" don't work, climate control seems a bit random, and maybe a couple more small things. Hoping the wife doesn't kill me. I just want to drive! :D |
Re: 8 cams are better than four!
Hose cut, pump is out and on its way to Marc. Tensioner too, and as luck would have it he's parting out a '91, so I'm getting the window regulator from that. With a little more luck, I'll be on the road by the weekend. I figure I'll solve the idle issue it has now and get everything running properly, 100% stock. Then I'll see about what kind of performance enhancements he's got, and get rid of that damned 1-4 shift.
