Front and rear were rebuilt and powdercoated by
Lonestar Caliper. The rears came from Keen Parts and due to very limited availability and unobtainable by Keen the fronts came directly from Lonestar and was the only set they had on the shelf. Lonestar does sell retail even
though their website says wholesale only. You can send your cores to them
but it would probably take a few weeks to get them back. Ask for Patti Lewis.
You‘ll love her Texas Drawl...

I didn't know the J55 fronts were that hard to get. They are available here in Alabama. The rears I should have sent out, but almost done with the rebuild now. I wanted to powder coat but this was a good Covid project. The G2 epoxy kit seems to have worked well but only time will tell. My main concern now is getting the parking brake set and adjusted...did you do that yet? I have read FSM.

All ZR-1’s have the J55 heavy duty brake system and it was an option on the standard cars in the 88’ to 95’ timeframe. All 96’s had J55. What’s hard to get is the 1996 GS/CE front caliper version of the system. They were only put on the LT4/manual trans. equipped 1996 cars. So with it being a one year option it makes them relatively rare. The caliper as I posted above is still a J55 but was beefed up to make it stiffer and the “CORVETTE” lettering was added. That caliper was subsequently used to develop the C5 and C6 calipers.

This thread cost me money but then again, the economy needs help!
Found a new set of 96 Grand Sport calipers at Keen Parts, still in GM boxes. They could not believe they were on the shelf and said they were the last set. Know they are hard to find being only 1 years so pulled the trigger. Now thinking about new rotors and pads. Current set are 8 years old and have about 40,000 miles on them so might be time. Advance Auto has Power Stop K1518-26 Front and Rear Z26 Muscle Carbon-Fiber Ceramic Brake Pad and Drilled & Slotted Rotor Kit with 25% off (about $435 shipped with tax). Any suggestions?
Thanks

Charlie
Check out the Baer Eradispeed rotors. 2 Piece, drilled/slotted with aluminum hat.
Much lighter than cast iron.
They’re pricey, but look great and theoretically work better. (probably no real difference on a street car...) Shop around, prices vary widely... Eckler’s, Mid Am, Baer website etc are the highest. I’ve had mine for about 5 years w/Hawk HPS pads and they still look new.

I hear you Charley! I settled on the PowerStop K1528-26 Z26 set. I paid $398 delivered from CarParts.com. I decided that while I could spend lot more for high end braking rotors and pads, my driving habits just don’t warrant it. It’s the same reason I went with the GS/SE calipers instead of something more radical in the first place.
Be well my friend,
H

Hans, when looking online also found a $30 Powerstop mail in rebate for the Z26 brake kits if purchased April 1-April 28. Let me know if you need a copy of the form.
