Jerry's LT5 Paint - ZR-1 Net Registry Forums

For those who have used the LT5 paint from Jerry's, did this go on good for you guys? I just tried painting my plenum with this stuff and it and will not cover worth a darn. I prepped the manifold correctly, did not use any primer though. Just wondering if I got a bad can or something, but going to have to sand all of it all and go get something else. What else are you guys using to paint your intakes (I don't have time to have them powder coated)?

Looks like you did not get all the oil off. Did you use an oil and wax remover? Also You need to do many light coats.

I'm not a professional painter by any means, but I do have some experience with it. It looks to me like that area where its messed up might have had some oil or contaminants on it. It may have looked clean but there was probably just enough to make it do that.

The other areas around that look ok. I'm wondering too if maybe you sprayed too heavy of a coat in that area? Or had the can too close when spraying? Just a few thoughts off the top of my head.

But there are other guys here that have much more experience that would probably have a better idea.

I would say your prepping or you using a spray can is suspect

Yes, used a degreaser and scrubbed it well, and then cleaned it very well afterwards. The paint is an aerosol. Guess I will go see if the paint shop can mix up something high temp and try my air gun.

De-greasers can leave a residue .. Trust me I have had it happen. This works ...

The secret after making sure you have no oily spots is to spray several coats LIGHTLY. Let sit a few minutes between coats until the paint gets tacky (not runny)...then hit it again with another light coat. May take three or four passes for good coverage.

There is also a secret of using a spray can (the secret wrist action in conjunction with nozzle control) which can only be demonstrated (not conveyed in writing)

Smooth, constant speed strokes with follow through past the boundaries of what you are painting. NEVER Stop anywhere on your painting surface as you make the sweeps with the spray pattern. Release the spray nozzle AFTER your spray pattern has left the painting surface area and Depress the spray nozzle BEFORE you enter the painting surface area on the return stroke.

I think everything you have done is salvageable, Just sand the area that the paint busted up down smooth, wipe it with denatured alcohol or wax/oil remover let dry than coat that area with many very light coats than one more coat over the whole plenum. Good Luck..

Steve, I agree that it was a left over residue. I've seen it many times. When I paint I use Prepsol just before primer which is basically a alcohol mix. Then do what Dyno says ... very light tack coat followed after its set a bit with another. What that does is it gives the next coats a good surface to stick to. Keep the can parallel to the work and do not use a sweeping motion.
Most of the paint looks like you did it right except for cleaning that spot.

Thanks, I have tried sanding it down to the metal, and tried again with the same result. Going to take it to a powder coat place tomorrow and have them blast it and coat it and be done with it. Should have just done that in the first place.
