ZR-1 Road Trip to Newfoundland & Labrador Canada

Day six of our trip was the drive from Montreal to Quebec. Once again the weather was perfect for a Sunday drive. We were heading east but this truck made us wonder where we were headed:




We took CA-40 to Quebec and then took CA-440 around Quebec to visit Montmorency Falls Park (Chute is Falls in French):




The falls are accessible from three points. Above the falls on a bridge, beside the falls from the Maison Montmorency and from the bottom. We parked at the bottom and got a picture with the PurpleZ:




At the falls, a cable car is available to take a ride up then cliff to the Maison Montmorency:




We walked out to the base of the falls which are higher than Niagara Falls:



For even more fun there is a zip Line that runs across the top of the falls:

After enjoying the Falls, we drove for about 15 minutes back to downtown Quebec City. Our hotel is inside the walled area of Quebec City near the Chateau Frontenac. The downtown area of Quebec City is amazing. The buildings are all stone or brick. The city is easy to get around in and the compact downtown area is ideal for sightseeing on foot. We stopped in front of our hotel and unloaded from the street:




Our spacious room was on the second floor of an beautifully renovated building:

We were privileged to be greeted by Oscar, the hotel cat:




After checking in, we parked the car and walked to the promenade and strolled to the shops and stores:

Jim/Landing make sure you go inside the Chateau Frontenac. My favourite hotel in Quebec City. If you have a chance take the Funicular to the lower town. Lastly outside of the walls is the oldest continually running store in North America. Oh yes, Tripler says make sure you have some French Fries. THEY ARE THE BEST����������

On Monday, our 7th day of the trip, we stayed in Quebec City for a second day. Our first adventure was to see the changing of the Regimental Guard at the Royal 22nd Regimental Headquarters at the Citadel of Quebec:




The 22nd Regiment is a Royal Regiment which means that the Queen of England has recognized their performance and presented the Regiment with a Goat:




Lyndi got a picture with one of the guards. The guard, a woman, did not move during the entire time we were there:

We left the Citadel and walked to the Farmers Market in the port area of the city:




We continued our walking tour in the Below the Fort region of the city. we enjoyed looking at the galleries and shops. We stopped at an outdoor café for a beer to celebrate another great day on the road:



The bad news is we just missed the free beer:

Juuuust kidding! Wonderful of you two to allow us to ride along (vicariously)! Ami and I want to do a New England trip in the fall - more than ever after seeing these pix!

Day 8: Today we left Quebec and headed east along the St Lawrence River. The plan for today was to drive about 130 miles and use the day to relax, see some lighthouses and do some "housekeeping". We left early and passed through the defensive wall that was built to defend Quebec:




The first stop was to get the car washed. After some searching, we found a touchless wash and got the PurpleZ shined up:




We crossed to the south side of the St Lawrence River and stopped in Levis to get a view of Quebec from across the river:




Instead of taking the Highway (QC-20), we drove along the coast on RT-132. After we left the Quebec metropolitan area the route was relatively flat and very agricultural:





We arrived at Riviere du Loup early in the afternoon to have time to do some laundry. We have perfected our luggage and packing system so that we can easily go eight days and then quickly get the laundry done. Instead of packing in suitcases, we now use small organizer bags to manage our clothing. Here is the weeks worth of clothing and the laundry supplies:

Day 9: We left Riviere du Loup and drove northeast along the shore of the St Lawrence River to Rimourski, QC to see the Point au Pere Lighthouse and the Canadian Submarine HMCS Onandaga SS-73:





The HMCS Onandaga is a retired Canadian diesel electric submarine that served with distinction from 1965 to 2000. It is now a museum ship. Lyndi and I took a tour of the sub and found it to be in very good condition and well presented.


This is the Maneuvering Room where the electric motors that propel the submarine are controlled:



The Commanding Officer's Stateroom is smaller than the stateroom on my submarine. But the wood work furnishing are a nice touch that we didn't have on US submarines:




In the Control Room, I brought back some memories with a turn around the periscope:



The HMCS Onandaga museum was very nice but I had two disappointments. There is no connection at the display with the submariners that served on the ship. None were named and there isn't any log or records of the crews. Secondly, there has been an attempt to broaden the audience for the museum by making a connection to the "Yellow Submarine" made popular in a Beatles song. The bow of the HMCS Onondaga has been painted with cartoon characters and a peace symbol.

After touring the submarine, we drove 400 miles to the east to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, crossing thru New Brunswick on the way. We drove thru wooded areas and farm land. There was a very large lumber mill operation in eastern Quebec Province:




A good portion of the drive was on nice open road:



I have been asked about what it takes to post the pictures of our road trips, Lyndi took a "behind the scenes" photo of the Road Trip production department equipment. When we are traveling I carry 2 notebook computers, 2 iPhones, an iPad, a 300GB portable hard drive and all the associated power, and connections. Lyndi maintains the batteries, chargers and HD memory cards for 2 Nikon DSLR cameras:
