Default Trans Seal

Since Im getting a new exhaust system, thought Id fix the leaky rear seal on the ZF. Anything else I should do at this point? I see what looks like sealer under the lip of the seal.. should I use something for the new one in that location also?

If you don’t already have one, now would be the time to do a Hurst or ZFDoc shifter. I wouldn’t own a Z without one. Replace the seal, their cheap.

Already have Bills short throw shifter.... In fact, my whole transmission has been built by him. Im sort of surprised the rear seal is leaking. No grooves in the yoke either... Not sure why its leaking, but it is.

Anyone have a part number for the seal?
Do I put sealer under the lip of the seal??

You might chat with Bill about it to get his thoughts on why it is leaking and best solutions. But the above suggestions are certainly correct.--Bob

I was going to call him.... I felt funny doing so though for 2 reasons.... One, the previous owner was the one who had the trans rebuilt with him, and second, because this is a fairly menial issue that I really didnt want to bug the man about.

A couple of things,,, the yoke is pretty much brand new, the P.O. replaced it. It looks perfect, no grooves, nothing at all, mirror finish.

The leak wasnt terrible... a drop on the garage floor after sitting for a month or more...

Im on the O.C.D. side when it comes to my cars leaking... I HATE it!! So, being a pretty simple job and very inexpensive.... why not?

Plus... cant have a 10 dollar seal dripping onto a 1000 dollar exhaust system now can I??

I did check the level, right at the bottom of the fill hole...

I got the seal installed no problem.... Should be fine.
