Hi Jerry,

We will be driving from Tucumcari, NM to Tulsa on Tuesday, 6 June. If it fits in your schedule, we would like to stop and see both of you.

Send me an email, (jim@gizmosart.com), it is getting hard to keep track of all the conversations here in this thread.

I chose the route south to Eads just to get off the interstate and see some different parts of Colorado and to be closer to Canon City, CO for Friday's track. Phil, I bet a lot of the buildings that were in Eads in the 1960's are gone or empty now. The town was very depressed. Sad!

The remote-ness and emptiness of the Eads area was of interest to us. It sure was a long way between gas stations!

Not far from Eads is the site of the Sand Creek Massacre. A very dark chapter in the history of the American West.

Day 4: Into the Rocky Mountains!!

Phil, just for you, some pics of Eads. The School team:

Is this the grain elevator?

Prosperity has moved on:

We always have to photograph a train, Here is a nice Burlington Northern & Santa Fe coal train:

By about 9:00 AM, we got our first view of the Rocky Mountains:

We arrived at Canon City, CO and the Royal Gorge and Bridge Visitors Center:

The Royal Gorge Bridge was built in 1929 and is the highest suspension in North America:

The bridge is not open to private vehicle traffic anymore but visitors can walk across. There is a modern cable car that takes visitors from the Visitor Center to the south side of the gorge:

A view of the Arkansas River in the Royal Gorge more that 900 feet below:

After visiting the Royal Gorge, we drove to Cripple Creek, CO on Colorado Scenic Route 24, the Gold Belt Tour:

Along the way we got a nice view of Pikes Peak to the east:

Cripple Creek was a booming gold mining town that now attracts visitors with the beautiful scenery and Casinos:

I noted on the GPS that Cripple Creek is at 9,554 feet above sea level:

After Cripple Creek, we drove northwest through the eastern side of the Rockies to Leadville, CO. At 10,152 feet above sea level, Leadville is the highest incorporated municipality in the United States.

The views were amazing:
