Default Extra speednut in dash??

Hi folks,

In the midst of tackling the removal of the LTPWS bulbs from the DIC (finally!). So far I?ve got various pieces of trim removed, without breaking anything, phew. One of the side things I wanted to address was to try and silence an annoying buzz/rattle that would occur, at certain rpms only, in the vicinity of the radio, and that would go away if I pressed firmly on the plastic molding to the right of the radio.

So what I did find looks to be an extra speednut right there, that does seem to be loose and potentially could cause the buzz. But before I remove it - what is it?s purpose? It does not hold up any part of the trim or anything else as far as I can see.

Any ideas? TIA!!

It's been a while since I have been back there but I think you are missing the tab from the right side of the console tunnel. A plastic tab appears to be broken off that joins the right side. You can see the jagged edge where the the tab once was. That a common broken part and to replace it you need to replace the whole side of the passenger console. Since that's where you think the vibration buzz is coming from I suggest putting a put a small strip of the handgun cutout foam in there and button everything up. Or find a replacement with an unbroken tab. The good news are these are not ZR-1 specific but difficult to find with that tab intact. They break easy if anybody services the radio in the cars lifetime. And chances of that happening in a 30 plus year car are high. When these do come up for sale they are normally sold in pairs. (Each side) Good luck.

Yes, GOLDCYLON is correct. That is for right tunnel panel. Back to your post...there is a push in metal tab on the radio bezel in that area that either, get loose and comes off, or gets bent in and looses tension or just plain breaks. My rattle solutions for that is butyl tape (the thick stuff for windshield replacement), Get a good THICK brand and put a nickel size ball of it there (or anywhere that has a small rattle like you are mentioning (mine had it too). Is never hardens, stays sticky (ie vibration resistant), Cures a lot of rattles. Every C4 I have had gets a week one interior removal and I wrap harnesses control modules, just about everything with felt and velcro, the places the can't reach...the butyl tape comes out. It take a few months of driving and chasing the final noises out but well worth the time. BTW...probably too late, but Gordon Killebrew showed me a shortcut to remove the LTPWS module, cut the plastic divider behind the DIC and you can pull it out without any more r/i . I have never had to do it but it can be done.

ram_g,

Answer to your question - that metal speed nut doesn?t belong there.
As for the buzzing noise, could be many things including the radio itself vibrating. I have been chasing various squeaks and rattles in C4s (84 Z51, 91 ZR-1 and 94 ZR-1) since March 1984. Been successful at times. Currently, I am chasing what sounds like a cricket in front of me either inside the dash or the engine bay.
What Corvette 95 is describing is a metal clip that attaches to the back of radio bezel towards the driver side. If you are missing that piece, let me know. I?ll mail you one.
