How Many miles?

Hey folks, new to the forum. I don't own a ZR-1 (yet) but have been looking for one for a long time, and am working on buying one with 18k miles down the road from me. My "normal" Corvettes LT1 92 and 88 have 63250 and 62075 respectively and I wouldn't hesitate to drive them on a trip any distance.

I am curious though. I've seen how reliable these engines are, and I've seen the list of 100k+ cars that haven't had any major work. I've also read the article in 2013's Vette magazine about the ZR-1 owner who went on a 10,000 mile road trip and their car started with 120k miles!

How many miles does everyone have on their ZR-1? I asked this over at the Corvette Forum too and had a few responses, but am interested to see what the answer is over here since I'd bet more ZR-1 owners are on this forum.

Thanks for appeasing my curiosity and have a great 4th of July!

:salute:

Glad you came over to the Net, I sure hope you get the ZR-1, I'm retired and have lots of time.

Bought my 90 @ 19k sold at 50k
91 @ 9k now has 57k
93 @ 24k now has 30K

As far as maintenance goes. I had to replace the water pump, injectors and clutch on the 90 it had sat for some time before I got it. The other two have only been voluntary improvements or normal maintenance.

I bought my 90 5 years ago with 35K, currently have 70K.

Re: How Many miles?

Bought mine in 2007 w/ 35k on it then. Now at 57k miles

Time seems to run the clock on-
  • -many of the soft (seals, etc) parts, especially those that get heated,
  • -some electrical components, including some electronic parts such as the various filter capacitors (e.g., used in the Bose sound system), and the shellac insulation used on the ignition coils, and injectors windings. And, alcohol wrecks havoc (especially) with the stock 90-92 injectors.
  • -Windshields have a reflective film laminated in the glass which tends to deteriorate from the edges inward (aka "delamination" or just "delam")
  • -interior vinyl and carpet - especially susceptible to direct sun and/or high heat.
  • -tires too become hard and brittle and unsafe after decades.
  • -water pumps, for some reason too seem to "run the clock" and age whether or not the car was driven or not. (Mine died in the middle 40k miles)
Then there's wear items which should be replaced as needed, e.g., clutch components, wheel bearings (especially if tracked a lot), plugs, brake pads...stuff like that, i.e, normal wear and tear stuff.

These ^^ are the things my Z required since I bought it in 2007. You might notice, with exception of the injectors (alcohol issues), and maybe coils, the engine and drive train has been solid as are most Zs - you can ask around!

I wouldn't (and don't) give it a moment of thought to jump in and go for a long trip, e.g., cross country (I live in IL) to the Appalachian Mts to spend 3 days chasing around with other ZR-1 nuts before ending up in Bowling Green for festivities there.

And, I don't baby her either! It has now been 5 seasons ago now that I ported the LT5 and installed headers, etc. bringing it to 500+ hp with no issues or regrets! It is truly a "BEAST", and an adrenalin rush beit a short blast or long haul.

I've overhauled and hotrodded SBCs and Chevys since 1969, and I feel that all I came to know with regard to reliability, especially if driven hard - hard is pretty much confined to those motors. All that goes right out the window with the Z, especially at the 500+ hp level! The kind of punishment and revs I've subjected this motor to since i bought it probably would have destroyed (or worn extensively) a number of SBCs. These engines especially, along with the ZF etc (maintained properly) are bullet proof, including having bumped the rev limiter to 7600 rpm (to make room for the power it is now making past 7000).

Welcome to the "Brothers of the Beast"! Hope to hear about your purchase in the near future. I don't know what if anything we can do for the "permagrin" it will put on your face. (That's more or less indelible, I guess. Oh, well!)

Re: How Many miles?

Welcome to the ZR-1 Net Registry Forum. My Yellow 1994 (The Alaska Z) now has 151,000 miles on it and still runs great. My 1993 Quasar Blue Z has 121,000 miles on it and is running strong. My 1990 Black Z has 43,000 miles. I just bought a 1995, 4,000 mile Dark Purple Z which now has 11,000 miles on it, and we will be adding more soon.

Along the way, I have replaced a few parts and done "tune ups" with plugs, injectors, plug wires, etc. and fixed some leaking oil seals. Overall the ZR-1's are very reliable cars.

Find a ZR-1 you like and enjoy it.

Jim

Re: How Many miles?

I bought my 95 about five years ago. It had 38 thousand miles now has about 53.
I've had my 91 for 2 years and it had 23k now has about 26. The 91 is a 368 CI with 442 RWHP. I did replace the injectors in my 91. 95 was my daily driver for about a year before retiring.

I drive fairly spirited, while out cruising, therefore I had to replace a few synchronizers in the 91 because of me trying to speed shift one too many times.

Welcome and remember Have Fun.
