Oil leak

I have developed an oil leak on my 92 415. I looked in all the obvious places, but found nothing.
Oil seems to be collecting in the area of the crank sensor/dipstick tube. It's coming from somewhere above there. Pan bolts are tight, no leak from oprv cover. Front of oil pan is dry. Cam cover is dry. Front seal area is dry.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Oil leak

Oil leaking past the crank sensor O-ring seal is the usual culprit. Brother Yun came up with larger size O-ring replacement that solves the problem.

I?ll look for it. I had a bag of that stuff but may have gotten lost during the move.

If it's coming from above the crank sensor, it may be the center exhaust manifold stud. If oil in that area, remove stud, clean & apply hi-temp silicone to threads, reinstall.

Re: Oil leak

Most likely the crank sensor, but there is oil a bit higher on the block. Maybe being blown around?
When Mark built the 415, he had a leak at the crank sensor as well. Haven't had a leak anywhere since the build. Just started this year.

Re: Oil leak

Well, I think I found the oil leak and it's not good news. Seems to be leaking between the right head and the block under #2 exhaust port.
I normally do my own work, but pulling the head is not in my list of expertise. Ugh......

That would be unusual for sure.
There are two sources of leaks in that area, which are common.

1. Oil Pressure Switch. See the left side of the following photo. Remove the wiring connector & look for oil in the connector. If there is oil, replace the switch.

2. Oil Pump Access Cover (difficult to access)
Photo showing the cover. Located at the very front of the Right side of the Lower Crankcase.
Frequently due to loose bolts,w which can be tightened to stem the leak. If no love from that procedure, remove & replace the gasket.
