Yup it's true. My company retired me out 10 days ago. At least they gave me a nice package and full retirement benefits immediately. The nice part is I can collect my pension and find another job to boot (I'm only 55). I guess that's the advantage of working for one company for 28 years. My last day is the 16th of Oct. Which means, there no reason to stay here in Chicago (other than my FBI buds) The wife is already packing, she can't wait to get out there with the kids and grand-kids, they all live in SoCal. The house is up for rent, since it makes no sense to sell it in this market. So as soon as the place rents or I find a job in Ca. were gone.
So here's the ZR-1 question to all you California guys. What am I in for in terms of emissions testing and inspection on this vintage car?(1990 ZR-1) No major mods to the engine except porting and chip. I am running headers with high-flow cats and a Corsa exhaust. Do they inspect for emissions equipment or just the out the tail pipe emissions? Luckily I saved my original exhaust manifolds and cats. I'll be living in Orange, Riverside or San Diego counties, not sure where yet.
Any job leads would be helpful too. I've done it all in retail and wholesale automotive, looking for a Dealership GM spot or Management Consulting.
I'm looking forward to starting an "FBI" chapter in SoCal and taking the "FBI" International... "Fast Boyz International".
Any input would be helpful.
TIA
Hans

You will have a little trouble with the SMOG nazi's, but luckily it's not extremely difficult to get an exemption for the non-CARB approved headers.
You will need the air pump and all the smog hoses installed if your system doesn't already have them.
And the car will have to pass the emissions test, I'll have to go dig up my last one to see what the #'s are.
Welcome to the left coast.
Too bad you're moving so far south, it's not my favorite part of the state.
That being said, San Diego is pretty, but it's $$$ to live there.
Riverside gets mighty hot and smoggy in the summertime.
The OC just plain sux.

Tccrabs is right. Very very very! Did I say very? Expensive. But I'm sure you already know that. Beautiful beaches and the best weather you could ever get in the USA. But like fred sanford you'll think your having the big one when you see what houses cost out there. And don't forget state and federal taxes getting sucked out of your retirement check. Other than that great place to live.

When are you moving? Sounds like it's time for a final blast down the track and maybe one more brunch!

Congratz on your "retirement" my friend! But! speaking for the IL gang, we're gonna miss you, Hans!:( You will always be one of the FBI - a "plank owner" (to use a naval term;)). So, wear your "colors" proudly!
And, too, know we're all going to be envious as hell come Jan, Feb, when you send us pictures of you and your wife and the Z taken while on some foray into some twisties in the mountains.:worship: Some of my favorite day trips were going up to Mt. Palomar (known for the famous telescope installed there) or going up to Mt. Laguna...LOTS of twisties mixed with some straights, and some nice places to stop and have a bite to eat and take in the views before dashing down the asphalt again!;)
One thing did catch my eye re your exhaust; that being you mentioning that it is now a Corsa? More to the point: the MF stuff was replaced?? If so, how do you like the Corsa in comparison?

Hey Hans, Congrats on your retirement! I hope you enjoy it to the fullest!:occasion1
Live long and prosper!
sorry, I can't contribute on the smog info you need. If they're like NY they will do a visual on the equipment that is supposed to be installed like the A.I.R. system. It bites!

Keep your residency in Ill as long as you have property there and yes....Z titled in Ill :D
I see you have emissions check every two years in Ill as well as 3% of Federal adjusted gross income as state tax so there may be no advantage in residency :dontknow:
I live both places....South Dakota and CA.....NO emissions tests and no State Income tax in SD

Hans, maybe we forgot to tell you, but, as with most gangs, you must survive a beatdown to exit the FBI. We traditionally do this in the back lot at Wayne's Pizza!

Thanks guys, but there is not allot of choice about moving to CA. Since the kids and grand kids are there that's where we need to be. I lived in SoCal for 16 years and visit often so I'm very familiar with the cost of living. If it weren't for the family and job situation I would be retiring to Northern Nevada. If I can swing it job wise, Temecula (just north of San Diego) is where we will end up. Although jobs are more likely in Orange County, we'll just have to wait and see.
Paul, the system is still the MF/Corsa hybrid, I just said Corsa for simplicities sake.
I will leave it registered in IL as long as possible. However the CA police are very strict, if your stopped and they find out you live in CA your in deep $hit. Apparently smog stations are independent and you have to find the "right one".
Guys we need to do at least one more track meet and a pizza night! Just tell me when a where, I'm very flexible time wise. (now)
How about next Friday night for pizza? Let me know!

in IL, vehicles 1996 and NEWER get tested.. 1995-Older.. no testing required, this started in 2007. The emissions places here no longer have equipment for OBD I

Not true as long as you have Ill drivers license.....I have been stopped several times and I just tell them I am a resident of SD and have a home in both places and I do not back down on that (I AM a resident of South Dakota).....they just give up and let me go
They have never asked for MORE PROOF of any kind.
Good luck with your move ! Won't you miss the Chicago winters ?
I'd LOVE to GTF out of here :-x
Cograts Hans, you will be missed brother.
See you Friday Night Pizza.
Pete
P.S.
To FU's remark
ZR1Net members pitch in and we buy something like a
ZR-1 Motel/Resort somewhere hot year round and we all meet/stay
there winters. :)

I was put in a similar "forced retiremen" situation in 1989 and I thought I was not ready for it. Hind site has proven it was one of the best things that could have happened at that point in my life. I've done several things since retirement and none involved stress, and other management headaches...no more corp gamesmanship. My doctors tell me my life style change has added 20 years to my life...I'm now 76. I tell you this and wish your future is as good or better than I've experienced. I want to add that you are in good company with moving to SoCal; In case you don't know this or JVD, Jim VanDorn after he moved his AutoMasters to BG 5 years ago has decided it best for him, the business and his fans (including me) to this part of the US; back to Palm Desert. He will move to the Jefferson St., Fredwaring Dr. area about Nov 1. AutoMasters@aol.com http://www.automastersofbg.com/ (270) 842-0454
Jim is an expert on Calif smog, performance tuning etc and drag racing. See his story about his "Weekndr" Black Widow, that's for sale on his web site.
I am sure you'll find Jim a great friend and most helpful in solving your ZR-1 needs. Bill

I will be going to do a smog sometime in the next few weeks with my 1990 100% stock (except for new Bosch fuel injectors) I will post the results.

It would be fantastic to have some events here in CA... the only problem is the few of us here are all spread out around the state.
Congrats on the early retirement and welcome to 360 driving days a year.
