Our '90 ZR1 has the "heads up display" area on the windshield, but no "heads up" capability. Did ANY ZR1's have this function? AND is a replacement windshield available with the heads up display for the '90 ZR1?

What do you mean by heads up display area on windshield? If your talking about the little window at the bottom of the dash , that is meant for a radar detector because the windshield is laminated.
No ZR1 had Heads up display.

Nope, not what I meant! The article at http://www.answers.com/topic/head-up-display explains it pretty well. My father-in-law has the head's up display on his '03 'vette and I believe it was originally supposed to be on the '90 but GM had problems getting it up and running.
Unfortunately, there is a star crack on the windshield (that has been drilled/filled) but eventually we will need to replace the windshield. *sigh*

No ZR-1 had heads up. The "cutout" area is where a radar detector is to be mounted. As the solar tint inhibits a radars full capability.

Are you thinking you may have a pilot car for Headsup display?

This guy is RICH!! ahahahhaha,... Come on sparky, you KNOW you thought the radar cutout was a "HUD area" and once you found your foot firmly planted in your mouth you felt too stupid to fess up! hahaha
i think this link more clearly defines the situation

MAYBE he does have Pilot car for HUD? I don't think so but hey you never know with GM

I guess the 2 ZR1 ECM development stacks (88-92, 93-95) with HUD that I have are a figment of my imagination? The poster is correct as GM was planning to implement HUD on the C4 and development began as early as 88 I think. However I also think he is confusing the door opener cutout in the windshield as some kind of projection space for the HUD. If the dash has a cutout then thats a different matter.

Just a question...did the development of the HUD not finish in time for the Z to get it? Did they have problems making it work at a cost effective price?
I think that would have been way cool to have HUD!

The "cutout" looks IDENTICAL to the heads up display windshield on my father-in-law's '02 Vette with HUD. Hmmm...

BTW - quick correction - my FIL's vette IS an '03. He's dreaming about the '06 C6 as we speak (not bad for an 88 year-old) :-D

I believe Pontiac had HUD in the Bonneville by the 1992 model year, so it definitely could have been a Corvette possibility.

Sorry folks the ZR-1 does not have nor was it going to have a HUD.
Active suspension, well that is another topic. ;)

Short answer is yes. Since the C4 body style was to be terminated in 96 I figure GM just did not want to add any more cost to the car.

Thanks for the REAL "heads up", Mom! :-D I still think it's funny that the windshield looks the same as my FIL's '03 'vette, though! But, as they say, "Live and Learn."
Doc's (DDS LT5) has HUD on his 90. LPE installed it for him.

What if the radar detector is mounted high on the windshield? Will it not work as good as below where the cutout is
Thanks,
Craig

Has anyone here personally installed one of these Defi HUD systems?? See: http://www.defi-shop.com/product/concept/concept_top.html
I'm wondering if it's worth all the work, or if it would work.
Bob, let us know how it turns out! I sense you are anxious for a project...

Your right Nick. I've really thought about this one, but decided to put it off until someone comes along who has wired this one in. I think it could be plagued with problems knowing how "touchy" our electrical systems seem to be and this looks to be far more than a stereo/speaker/detector type of instal. Probably would help to be an electrician or electrical engineer.
Hey, isn't Rob an engineer?? Lets get Rob to do it!!!

I'm pretty sure he had LPE install his....I think it would be nice. I would think it would be useful autocrossing also?

I'm thinking just a light in the vent to tell me when to shift so I stop hitting the rev limiter. No way I could ever run NOS...my shift speed/ability really sucks I guess

I'll wire that sucker up for you Bob, got scissors and plenty of electrical tape!
You do have some spare fuses around right?

Well, I contacted a dealor for the Defi HUD system: http://www.edoperformance.com/store/index.php?manufacturers_id=14
out of Texas and their sales rep "Edwin" didn't seem to be able to answer any questions. He always had a package plan to sell me which didn't "jive" to anything on the actual Defi web site: http://www.defi-shop.com/ as far as what components were needed. He has simply disowned me at this point, he said I needed to buy an additional "auto meter box" to use with the RPM monitor, although there is no such thing implied or listed in the companies products, he did not reply to questions about this meter. I do not recieve any replies from this dealorship anymore. I also asked for a product catalog & recieved nothing.
I believe, the product is not compatable with the ZR-1; as far as buying any complete product installation kit from it's dealors. I guess, you should bring your car in for the installation to guarantee anything. They will not warranty any product sold outright for installation either, although they highly pressure you that installation is very easy for the DIY'er, and will offer incentives to buy off there web site(they don't even offer the correct components on there web site). I simply asked for a list of whats needed, and that could not be done.
