View Full Version : What are you using to install harmonic balancer/torsional damper?

So I'm in the Snap On truck before I pulled my motor getting a few tools and I bought this nice harmonic balancer kit that looked like it fit every application under the sun. Then I pulled the LT5 yesterday and no problem taking off the damper only to find the bolt threads don't match anything in the kit and bigger too.
So what is out there to reinstall the balancer/damper? I am surely not going to do like I remember friends doing in the old days with a 2 X 4 and a BA hammer.
Thanks!

Thanks Jeff. Is this still available or do you have to find it on Ebay and pay $500 or something crazy? Any substitutes out there?

Thanks Jeff, another bubble bursted with NLA. I'm going to return the Snap On kit today. At least I won't need the tool for awhile. Please let me know the progress if you get it made. I'll check with the bolt speciality company here and see it they have a long bolt with these threads and nut/washers to see if I can fab up something too.

If you know a machinist, the adapter for the tool you have is easy to make. I made one for mine. Its a 3/8-16 thread on one end ( for the balancer tool) and the Lt5 crank thread on the other end.

Thanks for the suggestion. The only machinist that I know is Carter from CT Machining; I'll talk with him about it. I already returned the kit that I had from Snap On (Blue Point), but I can buy it again or another one if I can get this adapter. :handshak:

Running into a brick wall with anyone that makes a M16 X 1.0 bolt in approximately 6" length that I think could work with a large washer and nut. All negative results with all the big bolt manufacturers, but I have one quote waiting for a response from these guys: http://www.tacomascrew.com/products
If it works I'll post here.

Can you get a shorter one? If so, send the bolt to me and I will machine a thread on the other end that will screw into the balancer tool. Just let me know what thread you need.

I'm sure your local machine shop could whip this out very easily. Or you can buy a M16 x 1.0 die and with some 5/8" round stock (close enough to 16 mm) and make your own.

Thanks for the offer and I'll see what else is out there. I like your idea you suggested at first and it might be the way to go. I'll check around and let you know. The Blue Point kit that I had from Snap On included these: Description:
Includes seven adaptors for use on a wide range of engines. Adaptor sizes are 7/16"-20, 1/2"-20, 9/16"-18, 3/4"-16, M12 x 1.5, M14 x 1.5, and M16 x 2.0.

Thanks, I'll see what can be done here. I definitely won't try it myself, but like you said a good machine shop should be able to make this.

Any updates on a tool to install your balancer? I will have to be worrying about it in a little while.

It's funny you should ask as I finally got an email from the Rep at Tacoma Screw. He tried to get a quote from all of his suppliers and not one is willing to make a bolt with this thread. Another thing I don't like about our Zs. I told him to see if he can get any length as I was going to do as someone suggested and just machine one side to be able to use as an adapter with a standard harmonic balancer install tool. I have not given up and more to follow.

Keith,
I am geographically challenged so I don't have the luxury of the pros.....or the money like you.
I can't even afford diapers anymore; all my money is going into the money pit I have.

Do you think you could get another adapter made and sell me one? I have not had much luck getting a source to make such an item.
Thanks,

I can see what I can do. Busy time of year both at work and home. You would still need to buy the balancer tool and then we could come up with the adapter. What time frame are you thinking of??

I know what you mean about busy time of the year. I hope to start assemblying the motor in the next few months and hoping NLT Jan to need to install the balancer/damper. Let me do a little more checking and confirm with Carter200 if he can make one and I'll PM you. I'll buy whatever installation tool I need to match the adapter type that you have.
Thank you very much.

Thanks Carter!!!!!!!!! :handshak: Once again the Master Machinist from CT Machining helped me out with this:

After searching and searching for a bolt to make an adapter for a standard harmonic balancer/torsional damper, I ended up just buying a new damper bolt from Jerry and using my old bolt for Carter to cut off the head and tap into the bolt. My problem is solved and it works perfectly. I could not believe that our damper bolt thread and size is so difficult to find. Thanks Jerry:handshak: for getting ahold of these parts to pass on to us.

Secondchance,
Thanks, I was offered a good job there and may consider it depending on what comes up in the next few months. As Carter said, it is very cold and I know it was a cold snap for a few days and not normal...........but, WOW it has been a long time since I felt temps in the 20s not counting the wind chill. You folks have a great group over there and it might be worth it for that alone.
Carter,
Thanks again; you're my hero!

PLEASE HELP
Does anyone have one of these homemade damper install tools that they would be willing to lend a fellow ZR-1 owner in despite need?
My car was in storage for the last three years as I moved to Texas without it. Had the car shipped to me this week and the car has a coolant leak from the water pump (got one on the way), and the balancer dampening material was hanging out of the balancer so I placed one on order. Sounds like changing this Damper in the car is going to be a real nightmare, especially without a way to put the new one back on.

You can make your own.....
Harmonic Balancer Installation.
The Harmonic balancer is initially installed using a standard harmonic balancer bolt welded to a longer threaded shaft (the Harmonic Balancer bolt alone is not long enough to initially set the Harmonic Balancer). Use Red Loctite (262) and torque the Harmonic Balancer bolt to 148 ft-lbs (block of wood jammed into the crankshaft area with oil pan removed). Be carefull the timing chains are not locked on the timing chain idler sprocket preventing the crankshaft from turning.

As I mentioned to you in PM, if I can locate it you can borrow it. The last time I saw it was in 2010 when I rebuilt, but move to Hawaii, Japan, Hawaii, then CA and all in storage so not sure where it is now. I'll let you know in a few days if no one else can help you out before then.
