I have a good friend who called me yesterday and told me his brother in Utah was in financial distress. Due to that fact, his 90 ZR-1 was for sale. The car is a Red/Tan with 14,000 miles on it. The asking price is very low.
I already have my 92Z and a 02Z06. I dont really need or want another one. I have a couple of options here though. One, buy it and sell my 49,000 mile 92ZR-1 in the name of having an all original 90 ZR-1 instead of my modded 92. Second, buy it to re-sell. I would think that $20k-$22k would be a fair asking price for an original low mile car.
I know the market is slow right now, but cars are still selling. I dont mind waiting a while to make a few grand. What would you guys do here?

A similar rarer color than red '90 with all original docs and 35K miles in great condition recently sold out here for ~$16K. I thought hard about buying but was too slow in acting; my friend got it instead. That made my wife happy though.

I can probably get this 14k mile car for less than $15k Almost 2 years ago exactly, I picked up my almost all original 92Z with 45k on it for just under $16k

If you have the extra $$$ and time, it's a no-brainer.
If you really are "Good Friends", and he really knows what's he's losing, here's an option:
Negotiate a deal with him, giving him the money he wants for the car under the understanding that he can buy it back later (when and if his fortunes turn around) for what you paid plus any expenses that you have along the way plus a small "appreciation fee". The bank only gives, what, 3% on savings, so add a 5 or 7% fee for the duration. Put it in writing and set a time limit so that it's clear that after 6 months or a year or so, the "buy-back' deal is null and void.
I don't think it would be right of a Brother to take advantage of another Brother's financial situation in bad economic times.
The Brotherhood of the Beast is what sets us apart as keepers of the flame.
This way it's a win-win situation.
You get the car for a steal. If he want's it back in 6 months or so, you've made more on your investment than what the bank would pay.
If he doesn't want it back, you make even more. But at least your conscience would be clear.
Just a thought.
Now if it were a sleazy used car dealer trying to unload the car because it wouldn't sell, then heck yea, I'd buy it and flip it right away.

My good friend is the brother of the guy who wants to sell the car in Utah. If it were my friend here in Colorado, I would suggest your idea to him. The feeling I get is the seller just wants out of the car. These guys are much older than me and believe it or not, dont even use computers:jawdrop: Ive been trying for a couple of years now to get my buddy on the Z06 site or CF, he still hasnt done it!! I suggested that the seller put it on the internet and he said "my brother doesnt do computers either"
My dad and I are thinking of going in 50/50 then selling it. He wants a C5 vert, and I just need some extra $$, so we might go this route......

I hate to say it, but this is the wrong time to be selling unless he is desperate. I believe things are going to get worse in the coming year, so buying a ZR-1 to resell is going to be a longer term investment.
He can obviously sell it for under $15k to you, but do you really want another Z sitting around? As you said, you can sell yours and keep this one, but you have put time and money into yours getting it the way you want.
If you have the room and financial resources then go ahead as it will be a win win. Otherwise I'd suggest you have him either list it on ebay and put his lowest price as the reserve, or hire a broker who only gets paid if he sells it at the price your friend want to get(minus the commission of course).

My opinions:
1. Don't buy the car if you don't have a place to store it.
2. Buying a 1990 ZR-1 now, with the plan to resell it and recover your costs is not a good idea right now. Maybe in the future, but you will have to be very patient. There are many more ZR-1's on the for-sale market now and I don't think the selling prices will climb any time soon.
3. Buying the low miles '90 to sell your '92 has the same problem as #2 above. You get stuck trying to sell at a bad time.
4. If the owner is in a financial situation that you feel you should offer assistance to, help him sell the car outright. You may be able to get the car listed appropriately and successfully with your internet skills.
5. When selling a car. Sell the car. Most buyers don't want to hear all the drama behind why the car is being sold. Describe the car accurately, post lots of pictures and name a fair price. Then listen politely to all offers.
Good luck.

Friend who runs a dealership called me yesterday with a 59k red tan 90Z. Garage kept exec shape 12,500. Another friend called 4 hrs later looking at a 91Z for $20, took the 90 for $13K. First time I ever flipped a car. The buyer was a major player in the England graveyard cars and is finally coming back to the fold. He had the 89 car that was restored for Yeager.

Hey Bill, Did it get there yet?
This was 3rd time I've used DAS and every time their service gets better. Scheduled ETA on shipment from their Las Vegas Terminal was Oct 2. They have something new so I could track movement of the truck with my Vette with each mile it moved. It arrived 4 days ahead of ETA.
When I saw that the truck had arrived I called their Lakewood Terminal and they said it was unloaded just 30 minutes B/4 my call. We picked it up Tuesday AM and it was everything I had expected...no suprises. We drove it about 125 miles to our home on Whidbey Island & it performed perfectly. The Sumi's that look like brand new that I got from another great Registery Forum member arrived Yestreday. I'll feel better driving it W/O those 20 year old Gatorbacks on it. They are in great condition, but I'll save them for come NCRS judging.
Thanks again for all your help,

David, I finally got most of the detailed cleaning completed and the original Gatorbacks replaced with the Sumis. So far, it lools like the non-OEM items are nothing that would prevent a top flight NCRS score, i.e., after market radio, tinted windows and the original selling dealer's addition of chrome plated wheels. Here are a couple pictures. The '90 sure lacks attention to BG Assembly detail that the later ZR-1s show!
I don't intend to do the NCRS thing...just drive it as often as I want and don't think whatever miles I put on it in the next few years will have much impact on market value. The original Gatorbacks show little wear for their 14,354 miles of use and will be available for the next owner if NCRS judging is in the future.

That's the first time I've heard anyone say something good about DAS. I've heard all kinds of horror stories about late deliveries, bad customer service, and damage to the cars they ship.
Very nice looking '90 by the way!

I too have never heard anything good about DAS and gave a lot of thought about using them this time. I talked to a couple of the top rated recomended enclosed truck comapnies but felt their arrogance about their "top crust" wealthey customers, etc. IMHO, they implied they were doing me a favor if they would even accept my business.
I contacted a lot of other haulers that were priced at a fraction of the White Glove self impressed braggarts and they all sounded like used car salesmen promising everything.
I finally went back to DAS; they had served me well in the past and I had little, if any, motivation to pay thru the nose or experiment with the other bunch. Once again DAS did an outstanding job, did everything they said they'd do, and more than I expected.
Maybe I've just been luckey but all in all it was a very pleasant and cost effective move...I'll probably give them strong consideration if and when I need to ship another car.
PS: tks for the nice comments about my new toy

Nice car Bill, I think you got a hell of a deal there.
If you would, how much was shipping to your place? Where again did it come from?
Are you going to maybe drive it to BG for the 2oth Bash in May?
Thanks.

DAS cost was $552 total terminal-to-terminal. Seller delivered car from his home in St George UT to the DAS terminal in Vegas with his pick up and enclosed trailer he used for Vette hauling. We picked up the Vette at the DAS Lakewood WA terminal, about 100 miles from our house on Whidbey Island the morning after it arrived at their location. They knew we'd be there about 10AM and the car was inside, had been washed & checked for damage per checklist when delivered to them in Vegas. They were meticullous in going over the car with me. The office staff was great help and even had a map with directions to the nearest local DMV office for me to get a 3 day driving permit.
We had originally planned to trailer it home but both wife and I couldn't wait to drive it. We both enjoyed playing with it on the trip home while the other followed in our daily driver car.
Right now we don't think we'll make it to BG next year but we are for sure going to Palm Desert next spring to welcome Jim VanDorn, and his AutoMasters crew back home from BG after 5 years...probably drive BEAST2 so JVD can find an excuse to do something to it and then he'll have a reason to drive it one more time and make sure I've not neglected or abused it over the past 6 years. :dancing :worship:

That price seems reasonable especially considering the car got there in great shape.
Sure wish JVD had stayed in BG another year for the 2010 Gathering.
