For my Yellow, 1994 ZR-1, I chose a Pioneer AVIC Z110 Navigation/Stereo system, This is the new updated model that Pioneer released this summer. It has a 7 inch touch screen display, and a sophisticated voice recognition function.

It is a double DIN system so it is an exact fit for the factory Bose head unit. It has built in Navigation, iPod support, Blue Tooth, USB connection, SD Memory card connection, and plays CD's and DVD's and video from USB. I added an XM tuner.
This unit does not have a Music Library saved to a hard drive the way the AVIC Z3 has.
The computer address search is very fast. The Points of Interest database appears to be very complete, and there is a provision to add custom POI databases using the SD memory card.
The IPod interface is better that the Z3 unit and a USB drive that you set up with music arranged in folders is easily navigated with the USB interface.

The Home Menu display is customizable so you can choose the icons you want on the Home Screen, a neat feature.
The cell phone/blue tooth connection works well. When I start the car, the unit automatically syncs to my cell phone in about 30 seconds and all contact info is available on the screen. The voice recognition can be used to dial calls for truly hands free operation.

I am very pleased with the Pioneer unit.

Nice setup. :dancing I have saw this unit the other day and have been considering it. Did you have to trim the bezel for it to fit?

The head unit fits in the dash where the Bose head unit was. I had it professionally installed and directed them to not trim the dash. So they got it to fit.
It does require cutting the back of the radio enclosure because the Bose unit has a guide "peg" at the back, and the Pioneer unit is a little deeper.

Pioneer obviously listens to the market. This unit has menu-selectable button color. Pick from a list or make a custom color. It also has custom menus. You can choose which icons you want on several of the screens. I really like it.

Nice set up Jim.
Assuming you wanted to buy a used or new old stock model, would the Pioneer AVIC-D2 or the AVIC-D3 be better in your and/or Daryll's opinion?
I've seen a few of both models go fairly cheap but the D-3 being newer seems to go for a little more. I assume it is because it has more features, but I am not familiar enough with them to make an informed choice.

The D-1 Through the D-3 are the 100% same platform. The only difference is the Hardrive size and the map software. The Forum AVIC411.com has a lot of details. A guy on the board there (Now a Mod) named Garret Toomey sells a new upgrade drive with the latest maps and the largest Harddrive for the unit. Install of the hard drive takes 5 mins and he includes the screwdriver tool with the drives he sells. So if your going to go the older platfrom route, I suggest buying a Z-1 and get the Z-3 hd and software upgrade from GT

I agree! Buy a Z1 and get an upgraded HD (Z3).
You can get a Z1 for $600 stripped and other options for a few hundred (bluetooth, Ipod and XM?).
Best upgrade out there!
Cheers
David
