View Full Version : Our first LT5 pull = no problems

With Lee's help, starting at 8:15 this morning, we rookies managed to have my LT5 pulled in under 7 hours - not bad for first timers, methinks. Nuttin' to it, really. Having new LT headers made is a breeze getting the exhaust off, and the rest went very well.

As far as being able to detect anything with my #8, we couldn't see anything wrong. However, there was evidence of coolant seeping in at 3 cylinders; two adjacent to the water jacket hole at the IH/head junction. I understand Dom had some trouble with that as well. I was using Jerry's gaskets, but that alone does not seem to always be a given. I'm thinking some of that contact cement gasket adhesive around the water port might help. Suggestions?
Note the coolant at the gasket (looking down the IH to the head).

More pix later - more show and tell, but gotta run.

hotter than hell today....95 degrees. Had a good time, actually surprised at how easy it was...... the 7hrs included a run to the store for a Oil line wrench for Paul, which added an hour.
Tell you what when Paul says he is south of 80, he ain't shittin........his place is not even on the map.

No telling how long it would have taken had Lee not been there - I owe him a big un now!;). Having seen the video on the LT5 pull helped out in several ways - as well as tips from the gang here on the Registry as well.

As you can see in the pics Paul only let me remove 1 ground wire and the wiper motor cover. The engine actually came out easier than an L98, we left the hood on with plently of clearance and no issues.
Its a big damn motor!

Paul,
Very familiar sight! Doesn't look as bad as mine. My problem was primarily #4 primary runner and also #3 primary. Leak between IH/Head interface.
Switching from Flat Out gaskets and on Jerry's suggestion, I used his thin gaskets and I applied head shellac just in the area of the leak. Knock on wood, so far its holding fine.
Car would run fine but then I would come to a stop and motor would run rough. I would see wisps of white smoke even in warmer weather. This all started a week after installing the Mflows with the Xpipe. Prior to that, gasket had been fine for 5+months. Don't know if there is a correlation but it was curious.

Yep, I leave the hood on. But that car was being stripped. So off everything came.

Are you using the cherry picker to hold the engine in place while you remove the car from around it?
Paul/Lee WTF you guys are nuts it was freaking humid yesterday.
Temps in the low 90's are ok if humidity was 10-20% & dewpoint of 35 :)
You guys could've used my garage with A/C, just pay the luxury tax :)

So Paul, what's the plan? 368... 415... 427... 440? At the very least now that the engine is out, have the heads done, valve job, switch over to the later valve guides and seals. Have Pete do the cam timing. Then powdercoat or paint those cam covers, plenum and IH's. Doing the work yourself or farming it out?
Good luck

Lee,
NEVER say thong to a Greek! Especially if you are male or a goat.

Well, looking at and listening to all that FBI hp rumbling on Lee's parking lot sure is enticing - no doubt about it! But, alas...$$$ being tight as it is and all, I've decided to finish my head porting myself, farm out the valve(s) job and timing the cams. No 368 at this time.
AND...paint the cam covers, etc too.
Someday maybe. But, gotz ta be practical, more or less. Besides...the Corvette Challenge at US41 might go down (how's that coming btw?), and 80-100 new hp would prolly be good enough for this year - at least enough to put a stake in the ground (and maybe some other club member's hearts...:dancing). No? If I were to go bigger, then the complications would most likely get in the way of racing with youz guyz this fall. I wouldn't want to miss any of that.
Stay tuned!

Paul,
Check my post on the Crown Point Drags. Looks like Sept 26th. Time should be enough to get it running.
