View Full Version : Crankshaft plug...

Well, I was not aware of the crankshaft plug until after I made several attempts to removal the pilot bearing. Needless to say I am alittle worried about the possibility of oil starvation now. I can see the plug is in place, but I am hearing the margin for error is 1/4".

1)any way to know if damage was done? Measurements, etc

2)replacement procedure?

Was thinking of measuring with a dial gauge on my spare crank and comparing to the one in the car.

Does the field service manual have the depth listed? It does for the LS6

Spoke to Marc Haibeck, needs to be pushed in 1/2" before it interfers with oiling. I will pull the Pilot and check proper sealing

Pulled the pilot..the plug is in place and no issues!

Replacement would not seem to be that hard, there is a stop to press it to....anyone done one of these.

NOT THAT I WANT TO FIND OUT!

NOT THAT I WANT TO FIND OUT!Ya'..just one of those thing that is better left undisturbed. If it moved even a tiny bit, then a guys worrying 'Will it Leak'? :neutral:. Or if it does need to be changed on the car, did any of the original sealant manage to fall forward...another :neutral:. It's no big deal to replace, most of the high end cranks I deal with are Rifle drilled same as the LT-5, but I'd much rather replace the plug with the crank on the bench, know what I mean buddy ;).

No that won't work.if you have developed A leak,then you'll have to replace
the plug.

Won't hurt to put some sealer around it now but as ALZR1 stated, if it 'Has' been disturbed then it's pretty tough to seal externally. If you think you might have disturbed it Lee, & want to try to seal it, what I would use is Green Loc-Tite (can't remember the number :confused: 548 maybe...?) couple different kinds of Green, basically it's a stud & bearing mount that's designed to flow into parts that are already assembled. Best way would be to stand the crank on end, short of that I'd heat up the cup plug in the crank a little with a heat gun, give it some Green, then rotate the engine so it flows 360º around the plug. Can't hurt :dontknow:.

does not appear it moved, at all so i am not going to mess with it.

A friend was replacing his pilot bearing in a 90 LT5. I warned him about the plug but he must have forgotten. If it leaks, it will leak a lot! We didnt have time to find another plug so we machined up a pilot bushing with a blind hole. Worked great.

I haven't done this excercise yet, but may have it coming this winter....does anyone have a pic of this plug?
