View Full Version : What's Your Roof Top Preference?

I just put the glass roof panel on for the first time today and drove the Z to the office. Other than the fact that it has a few small cracks I cannot decide which roof I prefer on the car.

There seems to be pros and cons to each- The glass panel allows more road noise and the sun, while tempered, can still be a little annoying and casts a glare on the dash. But being 6'1" I do have more head room with the glass panel and it is nice to be able to see through it to the open sky.

Looks wise I just can't decide which looks better. I bet that when I get the the windows tinted to match the glass top it will look smokin. But the matching color roof looks so classic. :icon_scra

I am curious to everyone else's opinion on which top you prefer from both looks and driveability standpoints.

Thanks,
Peter

I prefer the look of the solid tops. So much so I had to go out and buy a fiberglass top since my car didn't have one when I got it!

I agree. I prefer the look of solid top also.
Quite a few years ago I was on I-95 South heading for Florida. Right near Jacksonville a 18 wheeler minus the trailer had a tread come off one of rear wheel and spun it up in the air right in front of me. Thanks to glass top I was able to keep an eye on it and maneuver to avoid being hit. An unsuspecting Taurus station wagon near me got hit and he was all over the place!

I like the painted top most but for a change the glass top looks good but the dark color of the glass top breaks up the body lines. If my car was black most likey I would use the glass top more.

Got to go with the painted top. For me in the summer, keeps the car cooler.

Spring and fall I use the solid white top. Summer I switch to the dark blue........

I'll go against the trend here and vote for the glass top. I've never even installed the painted top on the car. I guess it fits.
I like the looks of the blue color against the yellow. Different strokes kind of thing.

Love the "blue" top. But I use the solid one for track days and for over the winter.

Well my decision has been made easier at least as to which top to run with. Upon further review there are many cracks in the glass top I have. It was probably stored in the car while it was garaged for 5 years and the summers here are brutal. No wonder it says in the manual not to store the glass top in the car. I guess it is back in the bag and in the garage for the glass top. I like the look and especially the extra head room, but I don't think it is worth spending the $1k to replace the glass top. That money is better spent on mods. :-D

To me the car looks wrong with either the top out or with the glass top. With the body colored top, the lines of the car seem flowing and the look is one of solidity. Without the top (or with the glass top), the lines seem too round in the rear and straight in the front giving the impression that the two don't belong to each other.

My glass top still has the factory plastic on it - and that's the way it will stay.

Only have the glass top with mine (though it was a 2-top car originally). Once I find a nice solid top in bright red, I'll swap them out. The solid top looks much better IMHO.

Aqua with Blue Acrylic top.

I like the 'airiness' of the acrylic top and think it looks good on my car - but the fact that it's black has a lot to do with that. I suspect if I had a different colour I would not be as happy.

I like the solid top in the day when the sun is out and the glass top at night for the cruise down the strip in Waikiki when it is cool. Looks wise I like my smoke blue tint on the Red 90 and the black trim w/black centers on wheels.

On my 90 red ZR I like the solid top for looks from the outside, but prefer the 'glass' top for the view from the inside out. For my Lemans Blue C6 I prefer the blue glass top period.

Hawaii,

Mid America has a perforated film that installs under the acrylic top. You keep the view but it blocks the sunlight from heating up the interior.

That's exactly what I have on my clear top, I like it... I have both tops, but as people have said from the outside, its hard to tell the difference between the blue top and a painted black top.... I've never had the painted black top on :p

My Blue Glass Top has only been on 3 times - the day I bought it - the week it was at the shop for the ceramic clutch/Fridenza flywheel work - and once when I got caught out in the rain at Corvette night @ the Crystal Lake Car Show (now a past memory since they do not do it anymore)

I gave up street bikes when I moved to the river cottage for the Sea-Doo, Vette and my Scarab (no top at all for it) and I always go TOPLESS.

BTW it is the same way we like to see the babes on their boats at the sandbar parties in Petite Lake in the summer see > http://funonthefox.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=163

I much prefer the glass top but I wish it had better structural integrity. Perhaps they should have designed the frame with a beam down the center since the plexi has more flex than the solid fiberglass top.

Solid to for sure :). I had a 87 that had only the bronze top. Way to hot in the spring and summer. It was nice in the cooler months and at night. Now I have both tops for the Z and the clear top is in a bag and will stay there.

As for looks which one? Mine is white and it just does not look right with the clear top on it. However I am sure there are other colors that the clear top blends well with.

I perfer the look of the glass top, but it does get too hot. I put on the film on and it helps abit. I like that I have choice in what top I have. The glass top is in better shape then the painted top as well. The previous owner used it the most and the weather stripping is abit worn.

I really cannot compare. I do not have the red top. Hint, hint, anyone know where I can get a red top for my 90?

Much appreciated

I prefer the solid top, but I need it repainted since I scratched the bejeezus out of it when I moved, and it needs a new headliner. So for now the plastic top is on it.

My top is in a carrying case and has never been on the car. Still has GM sticker on it.

I have other glass tops that I use though. Glass top is ok, seems like interior is bigger with it on but it's not great in hot weather.

Have you thought of using the perforated film sold by Mid America? I have that on my Lexan top and it blocks direct sunlight but allows you to look thru to the sky. $20.
