I have purchased headers that included Random technology cats. What can i do as far as a visual inspection to see if they are good. (cats) If not Im gutting them.
Then I will do something next year to pass emissions.:)

Seriously though Can I tell if the cats need replacement by the condition of the insides. The insides do slip around a bit.

Short answer is no. On the originals its easy because the substrate breaks up into a catalyst ball and rattles around like a chick full o nuts. The RTs and the magaflows have the substrate on the inside walls. So in short I think the only way to know is if your emissions test changes dramtically from one year to the next. GC

You could look at them to see if any substrate is clogged, or if they look burned up or coated or something. I'm sure you can tell if something is horribly wrong with them visually.
