View Full Version : Traveling ZR-1 New Owner could use some help

This post is specifically for the Virginia clan of owners. I know you are a tight knit group so here goes.

I just sold my car, #458, to a guy who is traveling to Virginia from Idaho. He is having a problem with the air conditioning and the drivers window. I am curious if you all could help him fix these items (or at least check them out) before he leaves for Texas. He is traveling with his 76 year old father and he is worried the heat in Texas once they get there might be a bit much for his father. I don't know his exact scedule, but he should be arriving in Alexandria on Sunday or Monday.

Here's the problems:

The power window switch has apparantly given up the ghost, so he probably just needs a switch.

The air conditioning doesn't sem to blow above the fan level of 5 and it's getting stuffy in the car. I don't know anything about air conditioning so I am hoping one of you might.

Both the left front and rear amps are not working. I just replaced them with ones off ebay so they must have been close to bad.

All of these items were working when he left except maybe the amps. But they worked when I installed them. So who knows. The repair of the amps and the door switch aren't real big concerns, just air conditioning because of where they are headed after Virginia.

If you guys are willing to give him a hand, please send me some contact information that I can give him once he is there. I will also post this in the tech and general sections.

I have also sent Ron Kreigh an email and a PM as he is in Alexandria.

Thanks in advance for any consideration from you guys.

What part of Va is he in? If he is in Northern Virginia, we have a few guys that can possibly take a look.

PM me his email

He's headed to Alexandria. Is that considered Northern Va?

Alexandria is surrounded by Fairfax County and yes that is "northern Virginia"... if AC is issue suggest he see a repair shop that can test system. How long is your buddy in the area (I live in Reston which is about 20 miles from Alexandria but is considered Northern Va too).

I'm not sure how long Michael. Ron Kreigh is in Alexandria and he just sent his phone number. Hopefully he knows of a good shop in that area. You can contact the new owner, Dave Hetrick at 1-956-451-6778 or email him at mgbrv8@yahoo.com if you might have any info that could help.

So far looks like the AC is the big thing. A battery went out on him last night in Ohio, he probably has that fixed, a drivers window switch is not working and the two left Bose amps have quit working. The cigarette lighter wasn't working when he left my house either. He plugged in his GPS is how we found that out. Never smoked in it so never knew that.

However the car is getting 27 MPG and running good.

Thanks

So is it actually A/C, or is it that the blower motor won't go fast enough?

For what it's worth, I had my A/C checked out by Cooper Corvettes in Quantico, VA. I don't know if their service shop is open on the weekend though.

They are open today, but only until about 1 or 2 PM, no Sunday.

The window problem is likely a failed motor. The switch is NLA from GM.

Hi guys I am the one traveling. It would be great to meet up with you guys if possible and ask a few question and check a few things. Or if that isn’t practical maybe you could recommend a A/c repair shop or a shop more familiar with ZR1s. I am in Woodbridge south west of the loop 495.

The fan doesn’t seem to have much velocity it stays at about level 4 or 5 and doesn’t go fast even on 10. It might be a high speed fan relay. My dad and I are also toying with the idea that it might be low on r12 and icing in the expansion valve causing the evaporator too ice up too. I am comparing it to my 84 vettes ac which has been converted with r134 and its no were close too it in speed and cool.

The advantage of Tonys Corvette Shop is he is likely to have any parts that might be needed. He often requires you to make an appointment far in advance. If you tell him the situation, he is likely to help you out. After rush hour, Gaithersburg, Md is about a 40 minute ride from you. Contact info can be found at:

Your symptoms usually means a bad blower motor. They are cheap and available at any discount auto parts store. There could also be plugged airways or non opening doors. I'd go with the motor.

John,

That's one very well kept ZR-1! Very, very nice! Dave had a huge smile - probably going to leave permanent marks on his face! It was great to talk ZR-1 for a few hours - I've been deployed for the last year to the Middle East, so I had some catching up to do on ZR-1 talk! We even dusted off my Z and went for a spin - first time I've had it out since I've been home.

Happy to help - that's what makes us the tight-knit group that we are; it goes deeper than the Z. I was fortunate enough to be around the San Antonio crowd when I bought my Z - lots of help from Corey H, Bob H, Ken R, Dewey S, Mike S, Arnold S, and all the folks on the Registry.... I'm sure Dave will pay it forward.

Best Regards,

Mark

Things are going good thanks to a few friends I’ve made on the trip. The transmission is still going to get a full investigation when I get home. I probably shouldn’t worry about it Boyd gave his word it was okay it’s more than likely okay. I found a amazing corvette shop in Bedford pa and a great vette parts yard with some really rare (C1, C2, C3 and C4) parts no Zr1 though I checked. One thing my milage has droped from 27mpg to 20mpg I am wondering if the injectors may be damaged due to ethanol. I have also been using redline fuel treatment.

Dave

P.S thanks for the help gentlemen

Whoa, from 27 to 20? That's crazy. You at home yet Dave? If so, Marc has a paper on his site on checking injectors. You don't have to remove them from the car. If they end up bad, or a few bad, try FIC or Accels. I used FIC in my other car (yeah the ones in it were bad) and they work well.

Does it have 4.10's and not have the speedo gears adjusted? 5000 miles you could almost drive across the country twice!

Curious if Mark might still be available to help check the injectors if you are in that area. It's easy and would give you an immediate indication of a problem. What a trip, just finished looking at the pics you sent. Where were all the Vettes at?

Ya we are not exactly driving a straight line we are going from museum to museum so far we have seen 20 of them and been through 16 states. I will check the injectors once I get home I have the tools to do it on the road if necessary I just need to find some injectors.

Update, we have stopped for a week in WI for the oshkosh airshow. The car has been running great but milage is still down I am going to address the injectors once I get home along with the trans. Also a tree hugging Prius driving moran hit me while I was in stand still traffic. We are up to 6000 miles and still growing.

Dave

Aurora40
07-31-2009, 09:38 AM
Yeesh! Sorry to hear about the Prius! Was it a very hard collision?

Is the average MPG computed by the car low? I'd think it might be artificially high if the injectors were leaky because there is fueling happening the ECM is unaware of.

While I was sitting in stand still traffic on Ohio route 8 a Dumb Azz tree hugger in a hybrid Toyota hit me in the right corner at 40mph plus while he was texting on his iphone F**king prick. When the cops arrived he pleaded guilty and a had full coverage. Also the cop was a vette guy(79) and so were a bunch of the witnesses. I tell you I was about to tear that tofu eating pipsqueak in two but thankfully my Pops calmed me down. I called the insurance company and my local chevy dealer and got them to talking, my guy at the dealer. I sent him and the adjuster a bunch of pics and details of what needs attention. the good new is that my guy said they will throw in the other touch ups in for free that includes the other blemishes and inevitable rock chips from the trip. When I stepped out of the car I was assuming the worse cause the Toyota was trashed and had to be put on a flat bed. when I looked around the corner I was astonished to not see anymore damage than there was, a cracked bumper and a broken under bumper but not structural damage.

Actually the "Heart of the Beast" Dave was referring to is the club newsletter that comes out every quarter to all paid members of the Registry. Once you join, you have access to all the newsletters from the last three or four years. There is a load of information in each and everyone. Tech, owners write ups (like I hope you will do on your adventures), parts and specials for club members. There's loads of other info in the members section that is only accessible as a paid member too.

Oh yeah, when you join, you also get a bitchen t-shirt.

Also is the 1990 zr1 bumper the same as the 91 except for the moldings? It looks like tshe is going to make it to the Vettes on Lex event.

I would think the rear emblem would go in holes in the bumper. Look at some pics of 92-95's and then just wing it as far as placement goes. I used 3M weatherstrip adhesive to put those on and it worked really well holding them.

91s did not have side emblems from the factory. Folks added them according to the placement on the 95s (and 94s?).

The rear emblem is 12" right of the LP opening and 1/2" below the molding. I don't think there were any factory holes for the emblem - the replacement ones I have are flat and attached with double-sided tape or trim cement.

When is the Vettes on the Lex thing happening and what club is coordinating?
