The dual mass flywheel is heavy and slow to rev --- very popular mod is to go with a Fidanza and a ceramic clutch up grade -- Many of us use Carolina Clutch for the supplier --great guys there IMO
Following are comments and threads on it all from prior posts
===========================================
You can go race with a ceramic like I did with a Carolina setup. If you are interested in the race setup just email the boyz at Carolina and they will get you all set up with a turn key package like they did me. My clutch was shot and I wanted a performance one so I went ceramic and with a Fidanza Alum flywheel I like it very aggressive however -- super tight grip action! But get ready for the dreaded syncro's gear rattle ---
I went stage 3 for my 92 Z

the conversion does result in a very noisy gear rattle sound...at idle(unless clutch pushed in) it is almost embarrassing..when lugging the engine(low rpms,,,ie around corners slow traffic areas ect.) and when starting off in 1st and in 2nd gear just for a bit after the gear shift....that being said I still dont mind since I did a ceramic clutch upgrade...and I can rev higher/faster do to lower mass and dump the clutch at 3500 vs stock 2500rpm dumps...the resulting burnout is unbelivable...(did a custom chip as well..with fans going on at 190f vs the stupid 230f stock)...she burns rubber all the way through 1st...squacks into second and chirps into third....never did she do that b4 that is for sure!!!! I love the performance enhancemant...but I have to say the gear rattle...more of a rut....rut...rut...rut...sound is very annoying to say the least(the rattle is the gears and syncros in the zf truck tranny...now that u dont have a balanced dual mass flywheel) the good news is that dm flywheels do go out and are big $$$(although some bargins on used and rebuildt ones do exist)so doing the conversion does put the stock one on the shelf for the next owner if they ever wanted to go back to the quiet stock arrangement.. All said I love the performance enhancement but hate the noise...typical of life always a tradeoff...My best friend and my pro mechanic and a c5 owner (Big Mike) said no way he could live with it if it were his vette...but then again he would get a lot of static from others(being a shop owner..repair shop)...and everyone would bug him on it... It sounds like a pilot bearing gone bad...and gearheads can't help but notice and comment...LOL so if u can take the ribbing..and have a strong ego(like me)(dont give a crap about what others think..just care abt what I like) then go for it...if u worry abt what others will say or think and give u a hard time abt it..then stay stock...cause belive me they will look, gawk, talk, question, and comment how they could never tolerate this bloody noise then stay with ur stock balanced dual mass flywheel...but if u want a quick revving,,bad-***,,hard pounding gear shifting,,,rubber squeeling ZR-1 then go for it!!! Just IMO but I'll take the Hi-Po ceramic clutch and noisy rut, rut, rut anyday!!!!

I just put the fidanza in my 92. I get almost no noise at idle, but some at LOW throttle takeoff. Its embarrassing when someone else is in the car. But im keeping it. Stock clutch/plate. Easy Mod.
Car revs like never before.
Have Headers ready to put in, waiting until sept/oct, also will do a topend port at that time.

I believe LUK was the orignal equipment supplier and still supplies to GM and many others. It's a German company with manufacturing plants all over the world. Quality stuff.

I went with the Fidanza flywheel and Centerforce sprung hub disk and the stock preasure plate. It works awsome. I have very little noise from it but it does make a little rattle only in nuetral. Some will be louder than others. But you will notice a difference in how the rpm's wrap up faster than with the duel mass.

The car is 16.5" off the ground(rocker cover to gorund).....is that high enough to do the work?
Also found out my knock sensor is off, that might be my performance issue at the track.

um, the disc will have the sprung hub..
but if you use a ZR-1 pressure plate and Throw out bearing, then yes you can use the Camaro sprung hub disc

Lee the Mcleod disc should have the springs already in it. This is a CenterForce but It should look something like this. Unless you meant your aluminum flywheel.

no
you can use a camaro Disc, but you need the Corvette Pressure plate and throw-out bearing
rhipsher
07-05-2009, 12:45 PM
Lee you can use a camaro disk with the ZR-1 clutch/preasure plate and new flywheel but you can't swap a camaro clutch in place of the stock clutch. There will be issues. And I know you don't want issues. So just use a camaro disk or an aftermarket one and your good to go.

Well, I found 12mm 1.75 studs at ACE for $2.40 a piece, the trans is lined up on the studs, but still having a hell of a time getting it in the pilot bearing, only about an inch to get the trans flush with the bell housing.
Cannot wait to get the damn thing done.

Hey there. since there in only about an in to go can you maybe start a couple of bellhousing screws and bring the trans in that way, how i did mine, it didnt go so i was going to backed the trans out slid it forward again went right in.
Good luck.

I had the same problem.
Fill the clutch resovoir and operate the clutch a few times. This will require getting the air out of the lines. Leave the clutch resovoir cap and bellows off while you pump the clutch pedal. After you cycle the clutch a few times the transmission will slide in.
Good Luck!

Should I be able to spin the output shaft still with the trans so close to the bell housing? I would be afraid if I cycle the clutch fork that it might cause the clutch disk to shift?
Thanks.....see Jeff how nice Jim is, maybe a lesson to be learned!

Jim is correct. Shouldn't be an issue. The input shaft should be thru the clutch disc at this point meaning that the splines are set. May want to try tipping trans slightly downward. Don't forget that motor may be tilting back a bit.

Want to know a way to trash the pilot bushing. Force the trans in ! Ask me how I know.
If you are lucky enough to have someone work the clutch while you guide the trans in. Pumping the clutch will work also. Help to make sure the trans is in gear.
As for Jeffs helpful hints , remember he spends alot of lonely night in the garage alone....

Hope to jesus I have not knocked any needle bearings out
Lee,
Just a couple of basics that can cause issues similar to those you are experiencing.
1. Throwout bearing. Did you slide it onto the input shaft housing while the trans was out to make sure it went on OK? There are 2 different sizes of input shaft housings. The throwout bearing for the small size will not go on the large one. Makes installing the trans a real bitch I would imagine.
2. Clutch alignment. Did you use an alignment tool to align with the pilot bearing while cross tightening the pressure plate? If properly aligned, a little wiggle on the tail end while on the alignment studs, some forward pressure & it should slide right in. If you doubt the alignment is still good, back the trans out & check it with the tool again. Can do this with the bellhousing in place.
3. DO NOT try to pull the trans into the bellhousing with bellhousing bolts. If it doesn't go easily, something is not right.
4. If the trans is in gear, you should not be able to turn the output shaft if the splines are in the clutch disc.
5. Before installing clutch, always a good idea to slide the new disc onto the input shaft to insure it slides freely.

Well it wouldnt hurt to pull the trans out and check the needles .
Reinstall the alinement tool and check the clutch alinement. Lee what are you using for a tool. I have a old input shaft that I have much better luck with if you interested

-Did not force the trans on with bolts
-An allignment tool came with the kit, so good there
-Looks like I did knock the shifter into neutral when I was restrapping the trans to the jack.
-The shaft is going into the throwout, so should be good
-Will try pumping the clutch tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help, so many things that are not mentioned when people discuss, great learning experience.

Man if I got invited to go on a boat like that I be there in a New York minute. Much better than the last boat I went water skiing in. A 1979 20' Sea Ray with a 277 mercruser. Faded yellow. God that thing was ugly. When you pulled into a cove that was filled with Baja's and Sonics and Scarabbs full of chicks in bikinis it was embarrassing. But it was either that or be standing on the shore on no boat at all.
