View Full Version : Silicone or rubber hoses

Just contacted a vendor to get a quote on reproducing hoses including PCV stuff.......are we interested in Silicone or rubber?
Looking to best prices from samco.
Lee, here is my thinking.
If rubber is cheaper by 50% then i would not mind rubber,i figure if the stock stuff held up 10-15 years these should last at least half that.
If the price for silicone will be a few dollars then silicone.
Either way i will need a set or 2 or 3 or 4 or ?? depending on price and if we need to order x amount to get r done.
Let me know.

I am going to send them an entire OEM kit.......
Is everyone happy with SAMCO or should I just go after the odd stuff.....F tube, F tube top, Breather hoses, etc.

Kurt has a "buy" going now for the PCV hoses. Why not get prices for all of the other different hoses other than those?? Just my thoughts.....

Rubber - with stock markings. Samco silicone hoses are just wrong ...

Here is my input. I would choose the original construction material.
I don't like the look of the Samco hoses on a ZR-1. The radiator inlet hose looks stretched to me (which it is because I had to stretch it to get it on there).
http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/Radiator/DeWittsinstalledin1990ZR-11.jpg
And I don't like the brand name stamped on the hoses.
I would be in for 2 sets if they look original.

They will be using the originals to make the reproductions......they make silicon for Audi, VW, Subaru, etc.
I will see if they can do rubber OEM also

unk, they need my old set to get me info
FWIW, I have made drawings for the PCV valve hoses, lower & upper, to obtain quotes for manufacture in Buna-N (stock) and Viton (black), in exact stock replacement configuration. I have sent it for quotation to the vendor who made the dipstick seals, but they declined to quote. I am preparing to send it out for quote to other prospective vendors.
I think the more choices more better for us, our ZR-1's and future buyers of the ZR-1's.
Pete
Viton has a higher temp rating than Buna-N and has approximately the same chemical tolorance as Buna-N. I've seen several of the "F-hoses" that were rotton-soft on the engine side and still good (a little hard) on the firewall side. I think that it's due to heat. If I can get the hose in black Viton at a comperable cost, then that's what I will do. Making it identical in appearance to the OEM part is a top priority.

Very possible in silicon, I might be able to put together an enitre kit for $140-$150...this would include all PCVs, Breathers, radiator, etc....

Lee,
I will give my input here.
If you have the interest to have re-manufactured, look into manufacturing and quoting these parts as neither myself or anyone we know of is doing these reman. These will be needed very shortly, esp since our NOS stock is almost exhausted.
Complete secondary vacuum hoses, full kits would be ideal, as like OEM in hard plastic and rubber where needed.
Air Horn intake bellows, made just like oem & not the samco style (After all, it's already available, unless you want reman by a different vendor to lower the cost)
Thermostat housing assembly
Coolant assembly crossover tube
Plenum connector pipes, these ae the aluminium tubes that attach to the plenum and always break off when removing
Power key switches
Power key bezels
etc etc etc.
There really is no need to manufacture the PCV Hose out of silicone, it's already been done, the PCV Baffle hoses in silicone are also done, We have these on our website now:
http://www.whiteracingproducts.com/images/10110907S
http://www.whiteracingproducts.com/images/10110906S
You can make the PCV Hose out of rubber if needed i guess, but it goes back to use our limited resources to manufacture items that haven't been manufactured, unless your intentions are to find lower prices.
Your cam cover emblems venture is excellent and once you get the emblem closer to stock apperance, you'll have a winner. In fact, i'll buy 50 sets from you once you get them sorted.

The SAMCO hoses serve a purpose in a pinch, but I just can't get past their large script/logo advertising plastered all over the hoses. They have the right, it's their product. I bought a set of black SAMCO hoses to add to my spare parts stock pile, but have been fortunate enough to not have to use any of them.
I would buy and use plain black hoses if they were available. Add me to the list of prospective buyers.
Yeap, keeping the prices down sounds like a good thing, also.
Heck $20 for dipstick seals coming on who are we kidding.
I found a non OE piece that costs .50 cents and available at local parts stores works just fine.
Secondaries we don't need no stinking secondaries.

I'd be in for a set of plain black...i want every replacement hose the LT5 could ever need. I have none and the car is getting old. Plus I want to do injectors soon and would like to just replace everything under there while I do it. Make it new again...kinda.

Have to agree that I don't especially like the Samco script - looks a bit like the sort of thing you'd see on a hyondasubitshi with a 16 foot spoiler and fart-can exhaust. The hoses themselves seem good quality though.

the silicone stuff is ultra durable and I upgraded because I liked the look of the red hoses but it's harder to "seal up" the silicone and it tends to bleed out coolant smell, not leaking, just the vapors and smell
kinda drives me nuts, but I've learned to live with it.
I think there are much better uses for silicone:dancing

Id be in for a complete kit that covers all of the ruber parts we have thats something we need.
Im not real crazy about the samco stuf myself, I used them on my old car becuase no one had original hoses, they were not very easy to install and It pissed me off.
im all for standard black and that it works like its suppost to and I like many others do not want to pay a arm and a leg for parts its reduckulous.

Well,
In anticipation of sending off hoses to be duplicated, I pulled the old set: Upper/ lower coolant hoses, hose on thremostat, elbows, breather hoses, f-tube, f-tube top, even the rubber double tube that goes on the front side of the plenum(90s only).
I am missing the down tube for coolant.....so if anyone has one that is shot, torn, or whatever please let me know.

Now that the emblems are done, I sent in a quote for the PCV hose, I want to see how realistic this is going to be to produce. Hopefully the Emblem sales pick up once I get a few out and some reaction. Slower than I thought so far.
I should have a production quote in the next few days. If its realistic, I will send them all over to get a quote for the entire package.

Lee, is it possible that people who posted up on your original thread saying that they wanted X emblems think that they are going to get them automatically? Maybe some don't know that you asked everyone to email you with their orders.

If I were to go after a group of hoses....ie; PCV vs Coolant is there a preference. I am looking at the F-hose at possibly $20 per if shipping is not a roadblock. Keep in mind I have only been given quotes and the product needs to be decent.

Both, Rad and F hoses
If i had to choose.
The more important is the F hose.
If one really needed rad hoses they are available from Samco.
The F hose is not available for poor people :)
Lee you'll be making both pieces lower/upper F hoses

I would like to see you produce both the coolant hose set and the PCV hose (F-hose?) set. My priority would be the radiator hose set without the Samco name all over them.

Initial info, the hoses will be made of NBR...here is some info on the material:
http://www.iisrp.com/WebPolymers/07NBR-18Feb2002.pdf
This appears to be a common material used to make hoses and is good from -100 degrees to 260 degrees and withstands 6 bar of pressure or 87 PSI. I think these would be sufficient for our application. From my research Gates hoses are good to 275 degrees. Samcos, due to the reinforcement material, are good to 356 degrees.
This company does supply hoses to aftermarket companies, including one based in New Jersey
Let me know your thoughts

Seeing as 275 degrees is going to cook the motor anyway, I don't see why a hose needs to withstand anything higher than that anyway. Someone correct me if I'm wrong?

Lee, do you know what the stock LT5 coolant hoses were made with? I believe that they are reinforced hoses. Is it possible to get one of the standard automobile coolant hose makers to make standard hoses in the LT5 shapes and lengths?
Thanks for your work on this.

.......I may be out of line here but .....
I believe that if you don't want to pay the price that someone offers a part for, you don't have to. It is a free country. Don't buy from whoever it is that you are so agitated about.
I note from your profile that you didn't even list that you own a ZR-1 and that this is your first post. I would say that it is not a good start here on this forum.
From my experience, this forum is a group of people who help each other get more enjoyment from their ZR-1 hobby. 99% of the posts here are positive and helpful. That is why I like being on this forum and a being a member of the ZR-1 Net Registry.
As far as parts offered at high prices goes, I would rather have the option to buy parts (even though I wish some prices were lower) than the alternative which is not having parts I need available.
I would sure hate to have to give up on my ZR-1 because I couldn't get parts.
