John, would love to be a part of the group! I wasn't able to attend this year, to many scheduling conflicts, but am saving the date for next year. Went to the Corvette Forum this year with some friends from here in Sioux Falls. We left at 4am and got into BG at 6:30pm. It's almost 900 from here. It was a hard days drive, don't think I'd do that again. The truck traffic on I-70 is a bear, plus almost everyone drives in the left lane, while the truckers are "drag racing" for 5 to 10 miles!

What I have penciled in so far for a route.
Portland to Ogden, UT 744 miles
Ogden, UT to Lincoln, NE 869 miles
Lincoln, NE to Bowling Green 725 miles
After BG, I will be heading to VA for my High School reunion (ugh) and then tooling around the south and seeing some family. So I will not be driving back with the group.

Add 150 to your first day for those from Seattle area hooking up with you. Dude, that's over 900 miles the first day for those guys. I think the 869 mile day might be too much too. I thought we were talking 3 days from Boise? You guys from the NW were stopping here the first day?
Leave Saturday or Sunday
Tacoma-Portland-Boise 576 miles
Boise - Cheyenne, Wy 746 miles
Cheyenne - Columbia, Mo 764 miles
Columbia - Bowling Green 404 miles (easy day)
We could get there a little early on Wed or Tues

The guys from Seattle would cut across I 90 to Boise direct, no need to add another 150 miles to their trip to come down to Portland then drive over I 84.
Leave Saturday, that gives us an extra day if we need it due to a mechanical issue, or if we want to take a little extra time. I'll be bringing a few parts (alt, wp, belts, starter and gaskets)and tools.

I cannot believe you fellers can't plan ahead... :dontknow:
Indeed, there is a hotel across the street from

It's a easy drive from Lake St. Louis, Mo
to Bowling Green, Approx....5 hours
depending on how many high speed runs you make.
the Actual address of "Moudy's" for you peeps with GPS.
Moudy's Bar & Grill
2151 West Terra Lane
O'fallon, Mo 63366..... phone..636.369.8844
we are located in the peruque creek plaza, on the north side of I-70,
(on the left heading east) which is on the borderline of two towns,
Lake St. Louis and O'fallon, Mo
ZR1 owners receive a 10% discount on food and beverage, so, that discount, along with many of you card carrying AARP members, adds up
to a substantial savings. As we get closer we can firm up, who's staying where with whom and why.

This is coming along pretty well. 10 confirmed so far. Later in the year, or maybe after the New Year, I hope to start calling/looking around for reservations and stopping points to possibly pickup some deals for motels and where we can be hooked up with. Anybody from the stopping points, or close to them have any ideas please be sure to post here or pm/email me.
I'm really looking forward to this, it ought to be a blast.

Dennis,
If you get to North Platte off and on, any chances you can scope out some motels for us to reserve and stay at? I believe we are of course looking for hotels that are in decent areas with good access to eating establishment(s) very close. Maybe a Mom and Pop type hotel that would be grateful for us staying there and filling their rooms for a night would be sweet.
Any other recommendations you might might have on North Platte would be great.

John, I am going to be joining the Caravan either in Omaha/Council Bluffs area, or possibly near Nebraska City, NE area(just off I-29, exit 10).
At this exit there is a BP and a Shell Station (in the centeral mid-west area ALL Shell station, their Premimun gas is ELTHNOL:censored: - I think also all over torwards BG also:().
Also at this exit there is a resturant in the BP truck stop - across the street is a Wendy's.
This might be a good place to stop for gas and a break for lunch - it's 278 miles/4 hours from North Platte(short way) or 321/4.5 if you go through Omaha. A lot would depend on what time you are planning on departing that morning.
Let me know what you think - we'll need to do more planning as the dates get closer to link up.
We had less then a inch of snow last night, but North Platte had 16"!!!!!:jawdrop:

First, I will be joining either in Council Bluffs,IA or Nebraska City,NE (see my post at the end of the orginial string.
Second, the schedul shows the inital departure on Sat - is this the 8Th of May? If so, following the scedule we leave O'Fallon on the 11th and get to Bowling Green, that afternoon. The Gathering is the 13th-15. Am I missing something that we would get to BG a day before the Gathering?

Mike, we allocated an extra day for the possibility of a mechanical delay, plus a little adverse weather. The Wed of the Gathering there is a Party, plus it gives you a little time to relax and get geared back up for all the events starting on Thursday.

I am thinking if all goes well and we arrive on Tuesday, maybe we could take a road trip to Nashville. It's only 65 miles. I think you've been there haven't you Jeff. Also I believe Ron usually has drag racing planned for Wednesday too. Anyway, just a thought for filler if some don't want to race.

I'll give you my thoughts, John. But, its not looking like I'll be able to make the road trip due to other time off plans in 2010. However, I will say, based on my 4,700 mile road trip in August, that anything over 800 miles in one day is a killer. I did 835 my first day on the way out to the midwest, and spent the next 700 mile day stopping every 100 miles for fatigue, etc. So, I'd plan on 4 days to return, and if you get wild hairs and want to do it in 3, well, you can decide that on the way.
Not to mention you guys will be in those squeaky, old, uncomfortable ZR-1's...

One thing just brought to my attention was the need to know if anyone will be traveling with a companion. Wife, girlfreind, hooker, friend and so on. This will be important when we go to rent rooms at the various stopping points.
So just keep that in mind when we get closer. This is a big commitment in both time and money (a few grand maybe less) to attend this event.
Looks like there will be seven or so headed in that direction with four of us from the PNW. I will post this on the PNWZR1 and see if there are more planning on going that just haven't, or don't post on the Registry.

So far we are picking up two along the way, Dennis (2 hrs east of North Platte) and Mike (Council Bluffs).
Joe, where would you plan on joining?
Dennis, do you have an exit where we would stop?
Mike, do you know where exactly along the way would you join?
Rob, have you made plans to fly in to the event?
Rick, are you planning on coming to Boise or Portland to hook up?
Jeff, do you want to be the lead contact for the trip?
Right now it appears Jeff will be in the lead and Kevin will be at the end of the line. They both have Valentine One's that's why I'm stating this. Jeff and Kevin would be in touch with each other also to pickup the boys along the way.

Did not see any other than crashing at Moudy's. Suggestion for hotels, get through the city we are staying at, so we will not have to fight traffic in the morning.

I have no issue being POC. Most have my number already, so it's no big deal to publish it.

I'll spend most of Thurs at JVD's helping him with the BBQ, and some BGACC (I'm a member of their Corvette Club) things.
I'll see you there.
Please let me know where you all will be staying and I'll contact you there.

I would like to hook up with the group at either Topeka, Kansas, or Kansas City on I-70 after Nebraska City, and before O'fallon. I am about 3 hours away from KC, 2.5 hours from Topeka, so I think that would work out well from a time standpoint; I.E. same time from Nebraska City to both of those destinations. Is this the route you are planning on taking after Nebraska City? Down to I-70? So I would just need lodging at O'fallon, and BG. Are these places nailed down yet? Sounds like a great road trip!

Roughly 4 1/2 hours to KC from Grand Island, 6 1/2 from North Platte. If you leave North Platte at 6:00am we would arrive in KC at 12:30, best case. Figure 10 minutes to pick me up and 10 for Mike and it is 1:00 or so...

To get to I-70, you guys will hop off of I-29, and hit 435. From 1-29 435 is like a big box, that goes south down the west side of KC, then it goes east and west south of I-70, then it goes back north on the east side of KC, and you can pick back up I-70. Like a big box that lets you go around the city. Gates BBQ is located on the southern most east and west leg of the box. From the restaurant it is 10 minutes back up to I-70. So you almost have to come down that far anyway. Here is a link.......just hate to have you guys miss out on that good KC BBQ! Here's a link to make it a little more clear. Focus on where I-29 picks up 435, and then follow it around should make sense. Interact with the map to the north, and to the west up by the airport to get the I-29/435 connection.

Yep that's the way to go.........HOWEVER after further research there is a Gates BBQ much closer to the 435/I-70 exchange/Arrowhead stadium area. I have never been to this location, but I'm sure they are all good. ( actually I think I have been to that location before a football game CRS? ) The one I would propose would be at 10440 US 40, which can be caught east right off of 435 just before I-70, then US 40 runs right down onto I-70.....no back tracking on the way, and right off of the highway.....this is what I would suggest. Much much easier for you guys. Google says the first location is 16 minutes southwest of I-70. This one is right on the way.

Jeff/John: I was just re-looking at the schedule for the 10th.
North Platte to Nebraska City = 273 mile/4.5 hours (y'al lose an hour:Mtn to Cntr Time
Neb City to KC = 144/2.5
KC to O'Fallon = 216/3.5
Time-wise that's 11.5 driving time. No potty breaks, no gas, no food, no nothing. Can we "afford" to stop in KC for ribs? The last time I was in a KC rib place for lunch it was a 2 hour stop. That would put us into O'Fallon after 8PM.
Last year going to BG the traffic between KC and St Louise area was BAD!

Just a heads up; Gates BBQ can run large numbers of folks through very quickly. They are almost like a fast food joint time wise, but the food is great. That's why I suggested it. Unless you aren't going to stop at all, you will not save time going somewhere else to eat in KC. You are right though KC to St. Louis is always pretty busy.

So to clarify, I will not be hooking up with the caravan in KC.

John, just to verify - looks like it will be you, me, Jerry & Susan, and Dennis (if he's still in) going to Moudy's and then the 4 of us going onto BG on the 11th - is this correct?

John, I think we'll take you up on OUR leaving for Nebraska City at 7 AM - that should get us there around 10:30 AM (227 miles/3.5 hours).
Grand Island to Nebraska City is 144 miles/2.5 hous - so you and Dennis could leave at 8 AM and we should be arrive close to the same time - your thoughts
Dennis, thanks for the reply, glad you are still on the trip!

75 until lincoln,(90 miles) then 65 I think, to nebraska city (47 miles)
I-80 across Nebraska is 75, except around Lincoln and Omaha.

OK - now, how about where do we meet at the exit for Nebraska City? There is a BP, if I remember correctly, I know there is a truck stop with Shell (elthnol premium) and then there is a Wendy's.
I'm thinking it would be best if we all top off with fuel so we all should be ready for a gas stop about the same time (the old addage, "one stops, we all stop")
Input?

Works for me. You may want to email your cell phone numbers in case. I have John's and I don't think I kept any emails with yours. my email address is df@dftechcon.com
I am not sure what is at that exit on I-29

Here's my thought on the meeting place.
The first ones there will call the others and let them know where they are. Mike and I can be the contact on this.
So, if Mike and Jerry get to NC first, Mike will call me and let me know where they are. I will call Dennis and let him know.
If Dennis and I get there first, I will call Mile and let him know where we are. Mike can then contact Jerry.
Now all I have to do is remember that!!!

Sounds good to me! I am getting real anxious to be on the road - however it looks like a rainy day for you John on Sunday and then again for all of us on Monday, so I'm not doing much exterior cleaning on the Z!

Mine was already clean. I am waiting to run the weather until Friday.
Not racing sucks, I was really looking forward to seeing the big inch cars out there and Pete's mighty 350.

I was beginning to think about the drags - guess I don't have to "look" in that direction now!
So, are you ready to auto cross on Sat? Have you heard how Die Cast is?
Someone here told me today that the auto cross was in the same location, but the NCM said Die Cast and it's close to Beech Bend. Maybe they will rename it to "BEACH Bend"

Forecast for here to O'Fallon on Monday is WET and again on Tue, til close to KY.
It's raining today, so I'm going out to see how the windsheild wipers work!
I am READY for Monday!!!!!

Morning Mike,
You better believe I am. New wipers so we should be good. I'm getting ready to print weather for the week.
See you Monday. I'll call that morning once on the road. You are leaving at around 7:00 right? Dennis and I are planning on around 8:00.

Correct on the 7am - watched Weather Channel a bit early this morning. Looks like you might be in rain on Sun also.
The long range for BG is 20-30% chance of rain on Wed and Thurs -- but that means a 70-80% of NO rain:-D:-D
Have a good day, way out there in ID:wink:
Got to run - errands and then some adjustments on #135!

Trace Die Cast is high and dry. Here's a quote from JVD:
"The autocross will take place at Trace Die Cast which is right down the street from the NCM and our place. More specifically, it is close to the liquor store. :-)
And it will take place Saturday Morning. I believe they are giving it more time now that there will be more interest.
For some of you who are unfamiliar with autocross, it is a track set with cones that gives the participant a driving challenge which is scored for time and the lack of dropped cones. It is really a challenge and a lot of fun. In this case, a slow speed course, you will get into 2nd gear only once, the rest is done in first gear."

Thanks for the post! It's the first "confirmation" that it's a go. I'm surprised that the NCM site has no info (to assure the Gathering attendees) that everything is still a GO, except for the Drags:cry:
I am ready to "rock and roll" out of here first thing Monday morning - still wishing the weather changes here in the Centeral Plains before then. Looks like two days of rain while driving to BG:thumbsdo:

I don't think the Autocross at Trace Die Cast has anything to do with NCM
Probably something JVD and the BGACC (Bowling Green Assembly Corvette Club) folks cooked up when the drags went south...hope the Officials of the Gathering don't get their noses bent out of shape beacuse the locals are invited us to join them

The Autocross event is sponsored by the NCM. You have to register for the Autocross through the NCM. It has been on the agenda since the beginning. Last year there were only six participants and it started with a wet track. By the end of the event, the track was dry and there was plenty of fun had by all involved. Hopefully more will sign up now that drag racing is out. It will be a great time!

Thanks for the clarification Joe. I really got the story behind that one all screwed up. Glad I was incorrect so there will be no friction between NCM, gathering leaders and the locals
