The 3M tape that you want to use is VHB, "Very High Bond". It is used for body side moldings and emblems among other things. You can find it at most automotive stores. 3M also used to offer 1 YD sample rolls from their site, I don't know if they still do this.
Make sure that you clean both surfaces well with alcohol before application. This is a very important step to get full bond.
Acrylic based tapes also work well and actually handle the heat cycles better than urethane foam based tapes as they do not degrade. They are generally thinner though and do not fill the gaps as well for a full bond on the whole surface area. You can find these tapes at most hardware stores. 3M 468 is a very common acrylic based tape.
