View Full Version : "Pads" on targa top? wth?

Sold the top off my Z, guy got it tonight said there was no pads on it. I have no clue what these are, never heard of them. Theres some kind of weatherstrip on them if I remember right, headliner, thats it. Right?

Never leaked, had wind noise, not sure what this person is referring to. :dontknow:

Someone help me out here?

He may be talking about the little rubber pads just above the rear mounting bolts and the other two, one on passenger and drivers side. These are held on with double sided tape and usually fall off when the glue on the tape gets old. I am missing one myself on my painted top and two on my clear. The should be too hard to find and not very expensive.

Has to be those pads, I went looking I cant find them anywhere. The white sticky tape lets them go. When I bought my car I found them in the storage bin in the rear

Here is a picture of the top and it's clear which frame pads are missing. They didn't fall off in the box as I tore it apart with hopes they had.

Hmm, makes sense now I had never heard of those. I assumed someone had stuck something like a sun shade on there at some point and removed it,really never paid attention to it to be quite honest. Glad it got there in one piece, had to make him repackage it as the first attempt was crap.

Now that you mention it, I'm missing one on the passenger side on my clear top.
Anybody know where I can get one too?

Let me see what I can do to locate some. Know of local Vette dismantler, he has a ton of tops hopefully he has some.

Thought this was going to work out for me as Ron was actually looking for these pads for me and I started this search for the pads in the regular Vette Tech section. I'll try the other suggested resource.

Did the painted top have these pads or only the glass top and for all the years these were used did the top have all 4 pads or was it just the back early on and then at some point all four pads were used?Vintage Parts has the 14100214 new for $60 a set,no rear pads.

Both painted and glass tops had these pads on both sides and the rear. The sides are the same but rear ones are different for each side.

I've got four complete sets of these pads from ZR-1 Targa Tops. I'll sell three of the sets for $40 each set. If you're interested, PM me.

Both the painted top and the clear top came with them. At one time I had two cars and four tops. One of the tops had only three of the four pads missing so I bought a set at Carlisle years ago. The process of finding the correct double sided tape that would stick effectively was hit or miss. Most all stuck well to the top frame, getting it to adhere to the pad on a hot summer day was the problem. As I would go from one adhesive to the next, I found the 3M adhesive remover worked great. The bottom line is I got fed up and ended removing all the pads from all the tops. I don't miss them and don't see where they added any value unless you are interested in some kind of NCRS Top Flight award.

Each set I have came off a ZR-1 before the car hit 10K miles. The pads are a clean and soft rubber like material and have been sitting in a drawer for 8 to 9 years.

But did notice that the pads could easily come off if not handled carefully (such as removing the top and holding the sides where the pads are located).

It has no pads and there's certainly no evidence that there has ever been. I declined the sale today. I've got three other tops and they all have the damned things! Maybe mine is a "service top". I certainly don't know.

Checked both targa tops for my 94 and could find no sign of these pads ever being installed.

Like I said, a little 3M adhesive remover and there is no sign the pads were ever there.

The painted top on my 91 doesnt have the pads and theres to trace that there ever was but the glass top only has the pads on the back and both of those fell off,tape still in place,pads were in the car.

My 91 has the pads and my pops 96 has the pads as well. So these pads were susposed to be on the 90-96 at least. Not sure on the earlier model

The painted top for my 91 doesnt have the pads and there no trace they were ever on the top but the glass top has the tape where the pads went.As stated somebody could easily remove the pads-tape and never know it had the pads.
