View Full Version : service engine soon light

I've been driving my zr-1 as a commuter this week. My wife wrecked her car a couple of weeks ago and the z is my option since she is using my truck. Anyway, I am not complaining.

I am driving 40 miles each way on mostly freeways with very little traffic lights. Also this week has been mostly in the rain. I noticed my service engine soon light come on while crusing at 65 mph in 5th gear at @ 1800 rpm. This stayed on for about 2 minutes then went off again. About ten minutes later, it did the same thing.

This has reapeated itself each day on my commute. The light never stays on and does not come on at startup other than its usual routine with all the other lights.

Any ideas guys?

Get your trusty paperclip out and see if any codes are setting. Has the idle changed (Higher?)

While it could be several things, start with the simplest first. Try putting in a full tank of quality gas like Mobil premium. While I never put in off brand gas in the ZR-1, I have in other vehicles, and almost every time I get an intermittent check/service engine light.

First thing to do is check for codes. :iamwithst. Forgive me GC. We need just an "I agree" emoticon.

Nope no backfires that I have heard. Doesn't seem to idle higher but I will pay attention to that more. Going to find my paperclip. Thanx guys.

Also,

I only use shell premium gas 93 octane. Never used anything else in it! Would thier "nitrogen enriched" crap, affect anything?

My guess will be an O2 sensor code. Steady state cruise.

Another strong candidate I was wondering if a backfire event blew off the MAP sensor hose but thats normally a upon cranking issue instead of a steady cruise.

:iamwithst (but he ain't stooopid!)

BTDT a few times. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, a scanner (next to your dog) is your best friend! Best money I ever spent, but it was a little more expensive than a paper clip (and easier to use when driving down the road that a clip is too).:mrgreen: And, sometimes a code isn't set.:dontknow:

But, my guess would be a lazy O2, based on the number of times I've seen it cause the same symptoms described. (Can we say low cross-counts?)

Steve,

My buddy has a 04 ZO6, on a recent trip to Vegas he decided to use the Nitrogen Shell V-power. After two tanks full the "check engine light" comes on. Read the codes and it was a O2 code. Filled the tank the third time with Chevron Prem. and within 40 miles the "check engine light" goes out and has not come back on. Does the Shell fuel clean too much?

Note: I had no trouble running the Shell fuel?

Thanks,
Jerry
