View Full Version : Group Purchase of a Samco Air Intake Duct

I have noticed over the years that we have had some issues with our stock air intakes tearing or collapsing. Mark Coplin has sold an insert to prevent the collapsing issue, but I know some of you have wanted to get your hands on the Samco Air Intake Ducts like LPE use to install. I have found a source for them, but they will cost $158.00
So when I inquired about a group purchase, I was told that we could get them down to $130.00 (maybe less) with enough units ordered. I am not sure about color availability at this point, but I think several of the high gloss finishes are available such as blue, black, red, green, purple, yellow and orange.

So if you are interested in ordering one, sign up in this thread.

$158 or $130 I'm game for it, just let me know when we need to send the funds. Most folks are worried about collapsing the bellow <sp?> I need one stronger for a forced fed application ;-):dancing

Glad to hear it, as is mine.

I suspect that some are put under greater stress than others  It could also be a problem with them being taken off for periods of time and slightly deforming or getting crimped. I would not doubt that some are exposed to greater temperature extremes which might also have an effect on them.

The Samco Duct is desired by some for cosmetic reasons, and others will want one to eliminate the accordion effect of the intake. I am not sure that anyone has done a flow test to determine if the smooth Samco reduces air intake turbulence, but some people believe it works. I think I will order one myself just to have as a backup to the GM, or visa versa.

Bryan,
your duct may look perfect but I can assure you it is causing you problems. Open your hood and pinch the duct and see how easily it collapses. This is costing you power when you go wot. Of course if you have changed out the duct to an aftermarket one then this isn't a problem.

Hello and welcome to the forum Mike. :handshak:

It has only been three days since I posted the offer. We will probably be doing one group purchase, so we will wait until everyone who wants one can sign up. I suspect we will not put the order in until the end of September. The more orders we have the better since it should lower the price. It will probably take 2-3 weeks from the time of the order to arrive, so anyone needing one right away should get a stock one in the mean time.

I will try to find a few more pictures, and if anyone has some pictures, feel free to post them.

I am hoping that the more orders we get in for the air duct, the lower the price will go. We are approaching 30 units so things are looking good. I still have not gotten a definitive price on the hoses yet, nor the availability of them. I've been out of town and very busy since getting back, but I expect we will be placing the order for the air ducts in the next two weeks. We should know if we can get the hose kits by then, and hopefully we will be close to 50 units by then.

You can order the hose kits as well, and although I don't know the cost yet, it will be much better than the price you have heard floating around at $370.00.
I am even trying to work on a reduced price for those of you who want both the Air Duct, and the Hose Kits.

Exactly, the coolant pipe, outlet lower, outlet upper, bypass hose, inlet rear. Many people have been asking for them as well. The price that I can get will be much lower than the $370.00 that is being offered in some circles.

If it helps and/or is required I'll sign up for an intake hose, black. I don't need one because I made my own fake Copland Duct using a knock off I got from corvette central & some S/S duct. :o

It is not required to buy both, but when I place the order for the Air Ducts and Coolant Hoses, the more units we get will put us closer to a price point to lower the cost. I suspect it will look nice to have the duct matching the coolant hoses as well, but it is up to you.

Z Factor

Ok guys, here is the latest. All the colors will be available for both the Air Ducts, and the coolant hose kits. The colors are blue, black, red, green, purple, yellow and orange.

That is the good news. The bad news is that it looks like we will not reach the amount needed for any substantial price break beyond the $158.00 that I originally posted. That is actually a price break compared to their retail price of almost $180 per unit. For us to get down to the $130 range like we had hoped, we will need more orders. So I suspect that the air ducts will cost around $150-$160 unless we have more orders come in. If we were to get a decent amount of Coolant Hose kits ordered, we might reach the price point to reduce the cost of both. So at this point I think the coolant hose kits will come in at around $240-250 and I should have all the prices worked out early this week.

I want to put in the order this week, so if you know of anyone else who needs either the Air Duct, or the Coolant Hose kit have them post their requests here ASAP.

I missed this question.

According to Samco their Sport clip kits are designed to be used with fitted hose kits to ensure the best and safest possible fitment. However, I am pretty sure they do not make them for the LT5 coolant kit. I will double check tomorrow, but I do not see their clamps as being vital for a proper fit. If you want to replace your old clamps with new ones, they are readily available from GM. I can provide you with the part numbers if you like.

It consists of all 6 coolant hoses namely two coolant pipe hoses, one outlet lower hose, one outlet upper hose, one bypass hose, and one
inlet rear hose. This is the same kit you may have seen being offered at $370, but we should be able to get them for $240-$250.

Ok guys, this is the deal with PayPal.

My current account (Personal) is set up to send money free, and receive money free provided that its funding source is not credit card or debit card sourced. Another words, if your account with PayPal is funded through your bank account, or something other than a credit or debit card, then you can send the payment to me without cost to either of us. If some of you really want to use PayPal and it is credit or debit card based, then I can get a separate account ("Premier" or Business) that will allow you to send payment that way. However, they charge basically 3% (2.9% + $0.30) for each transaction to the person receiving the funds.

So if you want to use PayPal with the aforementioned in mind, just PM me, and I will make the arrangements.

Okay, as a noob to the ZR1 (& corvette) scene. What is the advantage of the Samco intake duct? Other than the obvious, stiffer construction and will not collapse.

Hi Trey,

I know like everyone else you are looking forward to getting the order in so we can receive our hoses. I am hoping to send it in this coming week barring any more hurricanes or other unforeseen delays. I have not received all the payments yet, but I will not wait until they all arrive because it would not be fair to those of us who paid early on. That said, it will be at least several weeks from the time the order goes in until we receive our orders.

To both Craig and Ben, either of you might want to take Dennis up on his offer of the red air intake duct he has since it will be much quicker to get his rather than through me. Unbeknownst to me or the vendor, Samco takes off for two weeks this time of year for the holidays, so any order that was placed would not even be processed until January, which would mean that you probably would not receive it until February. Furthermore, I have not gotten an answer back as to whether they will honor the group purchase price at this point. So contact Dennis(A1990), and if you still need one from me, I will see what can be done considering the aforementioned.

I am just hoping they ship out the group purchase order before shutting down for Christmas, otherwise Santa will be late with our ZR-1's gifts.

Well guys, as you might imagine I have been pushing to get an answer as to when the air ducts/hoses will be sent out to us. I assumed and hoped they would arrive before Christmas. So it pains me to be the bearer of bad news right before the holidays, but the word has come back that they will not be shipped until the 1st week of January at the earliest, possibly not until the middle of January. :(

Part of the blame for the delay is at my doorstep for taking so long to get the order in, so to those who placed and paid for their order early, you have my apologies.
The other reason it will take until January is due to Samco shutting down for the holidays.

The only consolation is that we are only talking about a few extra weeks before we receive our orders, and then we will have a great product that will last for as long as we own or ZR-1's. The kits will also look great as well.

I hope you guys have a safe and happy holiday with your friends and family.

Ok guys, I just got the word that they will be shipping out in the next two weeks. I was also informed that they have the hose clamp kits for the coolant hoses that some of you inquired about. The clip kits are made of stainless steel and consist of 12 clips per kit, two for each hose, and will cost $60.00
While any clips will work, they of course recommend using their clips " to ensure the best and safest possible fit".

So if any of you are interested, let me know ASAP as they can be included with your hoses in the same order without any delay provided you order the kit now.

I agree that $5 buck a pop is no bargain. I only provided the info because several people asked about them and I finally got an answer.

They certainly do not make any HP so don't expect to shed any fraction of time off of your 1/4mile runs.

Hmm, those are not constant-pressure clamps. I wouldn't use those on the Z unless something is wrong with your stock ones. Constant pressure clamps are better because they will always take up slack if the rubber compresses more as it gets hot, etc. Screw clamps will not.

I can still get them for you both, however the amount of time it could take to actually receive them is the question. The current order is taking well beyond what was promised. Part of the delay was due to me getting the order in so late we ran into the holidays where Samco takes off two weeks. Now my understanding is that part of the order is held up in customs while the rest of it is being boxed for shipment. So provided neither of you are in a rush to receive them, then I will send a PM with the ordering details.

Like I posted earlier I got mine on the 16th. The air duct was about 3/4 inch to long, I cut 3/8 inch off of each end with a pair of scissors. Then I used black shoe polish to cover the blue silicone on the edges. It looks very good I tried to crush it with my hands. If you noticed the middle of the duct bulges out, I could not pinch the middle in as far as the ends. I don't think any additional interior support will be needed. :D

There are a few members still waiting on the second order which is taking as long as the first. At this point I hesitate in recommending another order until this last one is finished. What color duct are you looking for? I know a person who bought one but is probably going to sell and may not leave it on their car.

As to the coolant hoses, you would be better off doing the group buy through the registry site at this point because as this vendor takes forever.

I did just install Air Blaster, course last night noticed that old aircleanerbox was broken.. Old duct was off its place and where duct connects at airbox, plastic was cracked..

It would have been lot nicer install new clean shining cool duct at its place.. Than that old dirty one.. :-D

Installing Air Blaster was pain to do alone too, course box is heavyer than old plastic one, it doesnt have middle screw that keeps cover closed and finding holes with flashlight by yourself.. Well.. I am not used to work with cars anyway.. :)

I wish I get my new red Samco air duct soon. :worship: :worship:

I am still being told they are on backorder but should arrive any "week now". When I explain how long some of you have been waiting I am given the same story about production delays, the factory being closed for a few weeks, etc. I almost feel like Tom Hanks in The Money Pit where it becomes a running joke when he asks how long the repairs will take to finish and the contractors all say "two weeks".
The most frustrating part is not knowing how long it will take. That is why I am referring future order inquiries to Uly and his group buy because I want to see this second order finished so you guys can get your engine bays looking sharp.

I know the duct will look nice with your new intake and look forward to seeing pictures of it.

It looks like we'll soon have this stuff in the ZR-1 Net Registry Store! Be patient...Samco is not the quickest supplier. The prices will be the best you will find anywhere for ZR-1 Samco Hoses and the Air Duct...and possibly the breather box hoses too. You will be able to order any color of hoses that Samco makes for eth Coolant Hoses and the Air Duct...the breather box hoses will be black...you can't see them anyways.

No one can say with any certainty, but this vendor does seem to get them much faster than the original one for the group buys. I'd say expect to wait 6-8 weeks from the time you place the order, but I am not certain.

Hello Tim,

This thread is actually related to an old group purchase through a different vendor. I only leave it up since a few orders have not yet been filled dating much farther back than yours.

In answer to your question these orders can take an extremely long time depending on the vendor. All the hoses and intakes are hand made in Europe after the order is placed and take months to be made and shipped here in the states. The vendor the Registry uses now is much quicker, but you can still expect a decent delay.

I would suggest you contact Uly via PM to check the status of your order as he is dealing with the new vendor.
