Talked to a company today that makes enamel emblems, they looked at the cam cover emblems and said they can make them, just need to check and verify heat resistence. tooling fees are minimal.

Any interest.....I do not think the cost will be much or am I chasing something that has been addressed.

JeffVette has a limited supply of aftermarket ones that he's selling, but I don't know if he has enough to meet future demands.
He's hand painting them, and from what I've seen they look pretty sharp.

I will want to make sure these hold up and are good first. If they look like crap, will just let it go....they were very interested when I sent it to them. I will have a tooling cost of about $100.

The adhesive might be the biggest challenge.

They may also be able to do key chains from the emblem, two sided, maybe with 3/4 digit VINs on the back, alot of options.

I will get the material info first. Price should be very very reasonable but let me confirm first.

Lee,i kept my OE emblems off my cam covers this time, was going to buy a set of aftermarket.

If you get these done at a decent price i also am interested.

I would love to get a key chain version with year and VIN

Black high temp RTV works great.

Company confirmed today that the cam emblem can he made with high temp enamel and would do fine with underhood temps. I need to get a cam emblem to them and they will send it over to build the die.

If interested we can incorporate the 3/4 digit VIN...other things we can have made:

-Coins with Vin stamp on back
-Key chains
-Bottle openers

Start up cost will be $125, they will send me a sample...colored sections will be done with enamel and the body will be black nickel finish.

Let me know your thoughts

Looks like they are preparing to stamp these out, should have pics soon and hopefully some samples to test.

I am looking at about $15.00 per emblem by the numbers they have given me now. I am going to do 90 emblem first, as I need to pay a set up fee for each version and want to make sure these look good.

Does the price seem fair if emblem looks good?

Count me in as interested in the '90 emblem. But it's gotta look GOOD! Mine are not that bad. The hand painted ones are certainly better than a bad emblem, or no emblem, but most of them look hand-painted. Not meant as a knock, but I'd love to get ones that look just like new, but don't cost an arm and a leg. :)

They sent me the quote, they originally wanted to use the same paint that the emblem came with, but unlikely it would last. i asked that they try to more expensive paint as they said is was "super hard"

It will cost me an extra $2 per emblem, but I will eat that cost.

Only concern is that they might look better (More high line) than originals, which might be a negative.

Thoughts?

They came out out nice.... you know Testors model paints use to make something that looked like a felt marker except with enamel. That might work on getting the bowtie outlined in red... I'll look at the hobbyshop next time Im there and get an orange and red.

lastly, are these emblems glued on?

The emblems are glued on with black RTV sealent. The ECM cover is painted with black ZOLOTONE 20-06 and I made the smaller panel on the front,I also painted the ECM bracket. The cam covers had some very minor stains in a few places. The worst place was around the area by the driver cam cover emblem, the more I tried to get the stain off the worse it got so I mixed up some paint ,used my air brush and fixed it.Other than that the motor finish is stock.Heres a picture of the ECM bracket.http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a136/FLYTYM/DSC00215.jpg

Here is the response from the emblem company......looks like for some reason the ridge/ring has to be soft enamel.....see my note, I think I can coat the emblem in high temp paint and "seal the soft enamel.....your thoughts?

I have heard back from the manufacturer. Let me know if you have any questions and what you think so that I can get back to them.

1. We can curve the emblem more.: Curve needs to match exactly if possible

2. The emblem can't be painted black with the hard enamel. If you need it paint black, we will need to use soft enamel, which is same as the sample, and it can't bare the heat well. Pls note. This could be an issue, I wonder if they use soft black, maybe I can then coat that in high heat clear coat.....might preserve the black.

3. The yellow cross was same size as the sample; it looks wider because the colors are full and flat on the cross. The sample is recessed with color, so it looks like ours bigger than the sample. How do you think? Pls advice. Thank you.
ok

4. I am afraid that we don't have many choices on the colors. The hard enamel (solid powder) is different from imitation hard enamel (mix by different colors). I found two colors that close to the color in the cross of the sample. But they are transparent colors, not solid colors. Will that be ok? pls see attached and let me know which one you need. Thank you.

237 looks correct

Thanks.....

Here is side shot of thickness.....this is prebend:

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q115/lgaff/side.jpg

LGAFF
06-20-2009, 10:44 PM
Latest update......

They are going to use the same enamel that was on the OEM emblem, I will then seal the emblem with ceramic paint when I receive.....I will also test the emblem under high heat.

Using the same as OEM paint allows them to color match everything.

The outer ring is being checked for width and will be adjusted if needed.

Christ this is a pain in the A$$.....I hope this pays off!

I am going to test them coated in cermaic and uncoated to see how they do....the paint used on these is the same as OEM.Thanks again for your effort Lee . As far as how hot the cam cover gets...kind of an open question to some degree. If a guys in Florida & his Rad is dirty, could run around 240º/250ºF, where as a guy in your neck of the woods with a proper running temp. Zee would be more like in the 200º/215ºF range. So how much of a factor do you want to build in? If the emblem can handle upwards of 250ºF, that's pretty warm already...would be nice to have a used/beat-up emblem to use as a test mule to fire up.

If there is a failure at those temps then I would lower the temps to 300 degrees max and re-test. Shouldn't need more than a "cushion" of 50 degrees. I shot my temp gun last weekend of 90 degree weather and the covers were 205 degrees.

I would not expect these emblems to see more than 225º F even in the higher temp climates. Not a lot of air movement under the hood of these things...I could realisticlly see more than 225ºF quite easily, under the right or more correctly 'Wrong' conditions.

Thats why I an test fitting them. I guess I won't shoot then down until I have one in my hand.

Also using and adhesive gel instead of backing will allow for some variance. I doubt that there was not varience in the OEMS.

I would not expect these emblems to see more than 225º F even in the higher temp climates.

In Arizona 225F is very easy to hit when the car is idling in traffic on the roadway. 300F would be safe

I did the heat test today cranked it up to 400 and paint held up...although this is not a complete test as it is not warming and cooling. I decided that I am going to coat in high temp clear.

Also I noticed that the edges on the outer ring on some samples were sticking out too much, this was keeping the emblem from sitting perfectly flush. I am going to have them take .25MM off the edge and these will be perfect.

This is a simple fix but I would rather avoid quality issues.

Well, I am testing coatings, I added the emblems to my 90 ZR-1, one side completely coated in VHT ceramic paint, and the other in wheel paint, but I did not coat the checked flag or the red.

So far both held up through a 30 minute drive...no bubbling, yellowing or other. I hope to have completed more coating testing prior to the final revision.

Interesting note, the cam emeblem provisions from left to right, drivers side is bigger, passenger side smaller. The current version I have made fits perfectly on the drivers side, passenger side is slightly too large(which is why they are modding)

90 Emblems should be in production in a few days, the 91-95 are going to take some work. Looks like painting the chevron will be difficult, and I need to pay them a separate fee to retool ........good chance the chevron will be recessed in a red outline.

They should have a few proposed solutions in the near future.

Well, I have logged about 100 miles with the emblems on....one side is VHT 2K degree clear over the entire emblem. The other is only VHT clear on the outside of the emblem, and none on the red banner or checkered flad.

No yellowing or peeling on either. Car also sits outside so subject to damp, etc. Both look the same as the day they went on.

Just waiting on 90s to be finsihed with slight mods and then shipped.

Yes, they are slow I was not going to post anything until they were in my hand, but here goes. I will take delivery of 100 emblems for the 90s on 9/23.

Price uncoated will be $16 per plus shipping and handling.

If you want VHT 2K degree coating they will be $18.00 per plus shiping and handling.

If you use paypal, I will charge the going rate for the transaction, which I believe is .80 per emblem.

I will warranty them for 30 days, the uncoated will carry no waranty but I will work with you if they don't fair well. I have had a set of coated on my 90 for 1200 miles and the car has sat outside for 3 months. No issues.

The Gen II I have not seen yet, but I have been charged for a mold charge, which means they have the mold done. The chev emblem outline will be recessed as this was the best way to control the red outline.

I will let everyone know once I have the emblem and verified they fit. I will then set up a system for payment etc.

Thanks for your patience.

Just confirmed with the vendor who does the communication with manufacturing, when they said 160 degrees was the max temp, they meant C not F....so not sure I need to coat these if they are good for 320 degrees. I will coat them for now and test a few without.

Note Below:

Here are the temps for the paint. We used soft enamel on your emblems (we use soft enamel only, since we can't use dying black plating for the real enamel).

Epoxy: 120 Celsius
Soft enamel : 160 Celsius
Imitation hard enamel: 100-120 Celsius
