I know there were two types of ZF6's dropped into our cars the black tag and the.....blue(?) tag? I know the change happened in 93, however there is a 93 for sale right now that has me scratching my head...maybe because it's 0817 right now or maybe it's the wording. either way i'm confused. the ad clamis that the car is "it is one of only 230 ZR-1s with the High HP & High Torque Capacity Trans". is the seller trying tos ay that the car has the 90-92 trans? if that's true, that's really neat

I can't say that I've ever seen a detailed breakdown of the numbers of 610Nm vs. 540Nm versions that were installed during the transition between the two versions of the ZF6 transmissions in the '93 model year.
There's a bit of mis-information and incorrect assumptions about the differences between the "Black Tag" vs. the "Blue Tag".
Not all "Blue Tag" are 610Nm (high HP/high torque), some are 540Nm.

That being said, this much I saved from my earlier posts when I replaced my '90 "Black Tag" with a '95 "Blue Tag"

thru '90 the part # on the tag should be 1052 000 031, '91 1052 000 035,
'92 1052 000 045 now the confusion, early '93 1052 000 045. These are all 610 Nm assemblies.

later '93 1052 000 047, '94 1052 000 081 These I believe are "black tag" 540 Nm and still have "lift ring"!

The only LT5 crash through "blue tag" '95 1052 000 087. No lift ring.

Kev:

Sorry 'bout the overly complicated reply.
Sometime in '93 they started using "Blue Tag" ZF-6's.
I've never seen anything in writing saying how many Black Tags vs. Blue Tags were installed during the '93 production run.
All Black Tags are 610Nm with a reverse gear lock out ring.
Some Blue Tags are 610Nm with a reverse gear lock out ring while others are 540Nm "Crash Through" without a reverse gear lockout ring.

Still seems a little complicated, have some more coffee and another coke.
Try a Red Bull or two.

hum i didn't know that some blue tags were the 610 rating I thought all of them were the 'quiter' trans thus the lower torque rating on them. good info, makes me want that white one even more.

i feel like I need a case of redbull to wake up today

Bill B. (ZF-Doc) told me recently, Black tags were built in the U.S. & Blue tags were built in Germany....or vise-versa:confused:. It's one or the other, though, think i have it right . Basically he said that is 'the' difference, no other rhime or reason relating to anything else...that's what he told me :dontknow:

so are all black tags the "noisy" trans and the blue tags are the "quiter" version? and if this is the case are the 93/94 cars that we have heard about running the "early and stronger" trans?

Give him a call, he can answer any questions in about ½ a second flat. Just don't call too early, from what i can tell 11:00AM is wake-up time, LOL...seriously
