View Full Version : Maxton Mile Speed?

Anybody have an idea what the MPH at one mile from a standing start would be for our cars?

I have been kicking around the idea of traveling out to Laurinburg NC and doing a high speed run at the "Maxton Mile" that is put on by the East Coast Timing Association (ECTA). An old Army buddy of mine is the ECTA’s Race Director and he has been after me to bring the Beast out there to play.

The speed sets the type of safety equipment required, so I sort of need a ballpark idea.

Thanks!

A new C6 standard Vette was clocked at 154mph at the standing mile by Road & Track. That would be a good place to start estimating.

Figure 150 + or - a few. Modded with porting and headers figure high 150's

I keep waiting for someone to say..."Hold on I will be right back!!!" and then come back with a "Hey I just ran a 152mph in the standing mile using the markers on the expressway" Anyone...

I have a 93 with headers and Heibeck chip, ran 157mph in the mile shoot out in Vegas. Those with top end work were running 160+.

Thanks,
Jerry

ran 155 with borla, k&n, haibeck chip, 4.10 gears, aprox 325 rwhp
ran 166.4 with headers, corsa, haibeck chip, porting, 4.10 gears, close to redline in 5th, 411 rwhp
you don't want 6th
2008 zo6 ran 166.5
get ready to buy/wear/install safety stuff

Altitude affects speed - Texas Mile stockers are around 155 at about 400 ft above sea level. Next biggest effect is ambient temperature.

http://www.texasmile.net/results/Oct2008TexasMileResults.html and look for car 107.
That ZR-1 is mildly modified with Vette Drs top end.

Well since that Pirate up in BG got ahold of my Beast and did his topend porting along with SW headers, I reckon to be over the 150mph limit where the ECTA requires fullup safety stuff.

Dang...., and I just got the Bose all fixed up for the Delightful & Wonderful Mrs Kari (She Who Must Be Obeyed) to listen to. Hate to pull all of that stuff out to weld in a rollbar.

I wonder what would happen if I showed up and Oops - - - "Didn't know that old C4 would go that fast!" ;)

Ya could always just do that "ooops, darn she's just stock. Didn't think it could get that fast in a mile? Da ya think them headers did that?"

For Las Vegas, the under 168mph category does not require a roll bar
for a non-convertible. I think a bolt on harness bar was sufficient.
Check out your local rules before you go cutting your car up (unless
the wife just wants a roll bar!).

Yes, altitude, Vegas is at least 1,000 above sea level as is Phx
Could run 3 to 4 more MPH at sea level
You will have to go thru tech

Heck I just pulled the rollbar out of my Beast last spring. Still wouldn't have been enough for the ECTA rulebook.

http://www.ecta-lsr.com/rules/2008RulebookAddendum032308.pdf

"..... All cars in competition over 135 MPH, must be equipped with a roll bar or roll cage structure. All closed cars between 135 MPH and 150 MPH must have a 4-point roll bar. All closed cars between 150 and 175 MPH must have a 6-point roll bar. All closed cars over 175 MPH must have a full roll cage....."

Oh well - - - The wife does like Vegas...., maybe I should head West instead of East.

Las Vegas (Nellis AFB) is at 1840'

There were 5 ZR-1's and the slowest was 156.4.

The results are posted here:

Doing the mile run is definitely on my bucket list.
Even tho I live close enough to easily do the Maxton Mile, their restrictions have put me off. I'm now looking at the Texas Mile or possibly going to Vegas (hey Ron, you got a spare bedroom?)

I'm in the process of buying a house this month so I don't know yet :)

The Vegas Mile might have run it's last race. I'm to retire this June and I actually go on terminal leave next week :dancing

Terminal Leave sounds pretty serious. Are you not feeling well?

Probably shouldn't have posted that last one. Sometimes my humor is more than a little off.

Congrats on the impending retirement. You've earned it and I hope you enjoy every minute of it.

Ron,

I'm right behind ya - - - 1 August is my "(R)" date.

That is one of the reason I was thinking of doing the Maxton Mile. The airport there is one of the local areas used by Bragg for emergency procedures training. I spent many a day and night there trying my best to break one of the taxpayers' airframes. ;)

Figure it would be sort of cool to bust the mile at a speed that neither my Cobra or Apache could ever make.

Are you staying in Vegas, Ron? Or heading for beltway banditville in DC?
Either way, congrats on your "retirement".

Thanks for the words...

I'll be flying 737's out of LSV for a small company 3.5 days per week...

We just put an offer on a house in SW Las Vegas today. Looking forward to spending more time in the garage and with Raptor Turbo Systems.

Cheers,
Ron
