View Full Version : Need a louder exhaust. A few questions.

I've owned my 1991 ZR1 for over 6 months now and she is running and looking good after a lot of little issues were addressed a few months ago. Thank you to all on this forum who gave me advise and helped me out with some parts I needed. Now for the next step I'm getting my drivers seat fixed at an upholstery shop where the leather is starting to crack and some foam replaced and both seats redyed the factory color. Total cost about $190.00. :dancing I'm also going to clean the carpet and install a Hurst short throw shifter with a new leather boot. I will also be rewiring the aftermarket stereo and fixing a loose tilt column. Now the big question. The car has a borla cat back with a stock resonator. I will install headers down the road but I need a loud exhaust for the beast. I had B&B bullet cat back on my 03 Z06 and magnaflow cat back with off road X-pipe on my 03 Cobra. Both of these cars sounded great and were loud. A little droan doesn't bother me. If I replace the stock resonator with an X-pipe such as this http://www.magnaflowexhausts.com/product.php?productid=6238 would that be enough or would I need to just run staright pipes in place of the borlas. If this X-pipe would work I could have an exhaust shop install it and if it still wasn't loud enough delete the mufflers as well. How does this sound. I here people talking about X-pipes alot but can never find a link or price to any online.

x pipe prices are around 199 to 299 . the x pipe will get you some noise, but unless you go to a 368 or bigger you wont see any power gains by going to a 3 in (jhmo). my car trapps 120+ in the quarter with a custom 21/2 in exhaust with a drgas xpipe and spin tec mufflers . i lost low end tq when i tried a 3 in exhaust . thats my take on exhaust for our cars some may differ .its up to you to decide . if you want to here my exhaust go to u tube and type in joe shmoe12301230 and listen to one of the vids of the black car . the white car is corsa with headers and bullet cats.hope this helps

Be careful what you ask for. Definitely show up at a function like BG and sample lots of systems. Inside and out.

Will that magnaflow X-pipe work with the rest of the stock exhaust and borla catback? I'm not really looking for a power gain. That will be later when I get headers and plenum/injector porting with a chip. Just looking for something loud and proud for now. After my other two cars I thought the exhaust was stock when I first drove the car. By the way Jeff I am looking to do the C5 brake upgragde. I have rotors, brackets and calipers. I just need braided brake lines, your adaptor brackets and perhaps some 1/4" spacers to work with the stock 91 wheels if my memory serves me correct. Do you have these parts and if so what is the pricing.

There's no shortage of loud exhaust systems. The trick is getting one that doesn't have resonance. Resonance will drive you crazy after while. Many of us have gone through several systems for that very reason. There are only two that I am aware of that don't resonate (much). Corsa and Magnaflow.

I don't drive the car that much so low to medium resonance does not bother me. My z06 had a lot of resonance at a certain RPM but i learned to drive around it. Luckily at 70 to 80 on the interstate in sixth I was below the RPM it would resonate at.

if your Borla is 2.5" then the 2.5" Magnaflow x-pipe that you linked to in your 1st post should work with a little fab work. I think you will find that the pipes will not line up with the x-pipe to your existing system ... the x-pipe is wider, center to center.

Later, if you get headers which will most likely be 3", you can adapt your 2.5 exhaust to the 3" headers ... not a bad way to go. You can also look at some 2.75 Borlas or go all the way to 3" B&B and, I think, Magnaflows.

Lots of choices ... but go to a gathering and listen to the different systems. Best way to make the correct choice the first time.

Here's what mine sounded like with straight pipes and a Borla exhaust at Corey Hendersons shop.
http://s301.photobucket.com/albums/nn63/keeno1970/?action=view&current=ZR-1gettogether031.flv
Kinda like a giant lawn mower. I was glad I put the Borla resonator back on.
And here's Ryans black 94 bone stock.
http://s301.photobucket.com/albums/nn63/keeno1970/?action=view&current=ZR-1gettogether032.flv
But without a doubt Robs black 93 with B&B sounded louder and more aggressive than me and Ryans.

Rick did you get a video of the white 415 on the dyno that day...that one was LOUD

if you want noise then getting rid of the resonator is the first step. if that isn't sufficient then remove the mufflers. if you live in an urban setting be ready for your neighbors to start complaining after the mufflers go. come to BG this year and you can hear my 415 with 3 inch B&B, no cats, X-pipe and no mufflers. it isn't subtle and i love it.

Thanks for all the advise and the sound clips. I would like to go to the gathering since it is just 3 1/2 hours away. I'm a instructor at a college in N.W. Georgia and I have a meeting in Macon Georgia on that Friday. I wouldn't be able to come except on Saturday.

I believe Paul Smith. It should also be the car that John Lingenfelter drove at the Gathering several years ago.

You mean this one? http://vettetube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=8b1a652ea7fd72d942da
No it's not the same one. But I'll bet somebody on here knows who's it is. That is the baddest old school Z I've seen so far. As far as the one in the pics! Jeff may be right. I met him there I just didn't get his name. When you only have get togethers once a year it's hard to remember everybody's name.

I too would like to see this full upgrade as a sticky. Parts list??

DScott600
03-18-2009, 10:50 AM
A sticky would be good. Some people say you must run A-molds, some say you need just a little spacer with 91-93 wheels. It would be nice to have a final end all thread listing all the parts and different options with pics of cars who have done it to prove what works and where to get the parts.

Because that Bad boy in the video clearly doesn't have Texas plates. I took video of the 415 areo body and that white 415 drag racing each other and they didn't come close to 10.6. More like 12.3

The white car has changed hands a few times.

John Lingenfelter was driving the white car at the drags. The video is from 2002 at Bowling Green.

My recollection is SW owned the car at one point, took the cams out and sold it. Car idled around 1,500 or so.

There are not many LPE 415 cars.

Has anyone just removed the stock resonators or the stock mufflers? Curious how that would sound.

Jeff there were four Lingenfelters there that day. It was a most humbling experience. These guys had some serious dough invested in these cars. I think 1 368 or 385 LPE and the other three were 415 LPE's. Just beautiful inside and out.

I remember talking to will Barrett and Jerry there. Just a super nice bunch of people. I don't know weather I should go to BG or Thunder II this year. I'd like to go on the plant tour at Mercruser. But then again I'd like to see the Corvette museum. I just don't know.
