Anyone have there Z judged by NCRS, if so let us know how you did. What year car you have and what points you lost, and for what the deductions were for. I an taking my 91 to a chapter event March 29th here in Maryland, I also drive this car every chance I get, it has 44K on the clock.

Having had cars judged and judging there are a few things to remember.

Make sure you have a fire extinguisher, When on the field place it behind the drivers side tire.

Be sure to have an NCRS decal in the windshield/sideglass or hatch.

Battery cut off switch

Remove floor mats and place them in the rear cargo area.

If it has two tops only one is judged so no need to bring the other one. Pick the one that is in the best shape. Top will be judged in place. The only time the top will be partialy removed is when you demonstrade the operation of the top wrench. (make sure you have it)

spare tire must be dropped and jack should be accessable.

A copy of the build sheet and window sticker should be there to assist the judges on dates and options.

bring your own fender covers and some beach towels. and a good set of general tools.

flash lights.....

Bring media that will play in your radio. If cassette then cassette if CD then a CD both etc... You will have to demonstrate the operation.

The most involved you will be is during the ops check. Review it before hand and do a few to know what to expect before hand. Set the alarm and test it by opening the doors etc.

If you drive it to the meet be sure to record how many miles driven. Believe it or not NCRS encourages you to drive so the driven points are quite generous. Every little bit helps. I drove 30 miles to a chapter meet here in AZ and added a 1/2 point.

Another thought. More "easy points"

Wheel locks are judged in the interior section. If you have them on they should be taken off and returned to the rear hatch storage. If you don't have the kit bag place them in a ziplock. They do come up on ebay from time to time so you may want to pick a set up.

You will also need to show the air cleaner. Make sure you at least have a delco service replacement. No points for K&N etc.

Same on the oil filter. Should be the ac delco PF 970 type.

Same on battery should be a Delco replacement. If it has a handle/strap make sure you take it off.

Bring both sets of keys. If you don't have two sets get them.

Let me correct something that Marty posted on the other forum

Enjoy; Learn; Correct what you can, and Repeat until you Top Flight.

Know what you are going for before you start judging. There are a couple awards that are 1 shot deals. If you just want a top flight, judge away until you meet the min.

But read this category.

NCRS - CHEVROLET CROSSED FLAGS Award®

This award was created by the National Corvette Restorers Society in 2006. The NCRS Chevrolet Crossed Flags Award is intended to recognize exceptional original, un-restored cars and encourage the owners to retain and display the car in its present condition. The NCRS Chevrolet Crossed Flags award is earned only at a National Convention by unrestored cars successfully judged and voted to be historically and educationally significant in four areas (Interior, Exterior, Mechanical and Chassis). This award is available to 1984 and newer Corvette currently judged by NCRS that has received a NCRS McLellan Mark of Excellence award. Regardless of change in ownership or judging result the car may never be presented for judging again. The judged section requires a 90% pass with the following standard "Does the item, part, fabric, plating or coating appear to actually be that which was specifically installed or applied on this car at the time of manufacture". If this is successfully passed the vote with the following standard "Does the area judged display significant educational and historical value which should be preserved in its present condition" is taken. Passing both sections in all four areas earns the NCRS - Chevrolet Crossed Flags award. As of end of the 2007 season, only 8 Corvettes have received this award.

Thanks all, I am sure the car will go top flight. I was just wondering if any of us have gone top flight yet and with one they drive. Thanks Eric, the fire extinguisher, decal and battery cut off I have. The info about placement of fire extinguisher I did not know about, also floor mats in rear cargo, and taking locks off and putting them in cargo hatch compartment. I do drive this car and will drive to the event, 200 miles round trip and would not have it any other way. I have an original gray rimed air filter, original oil filter PF 970 with no bar code and no Duragaurd on the label (the real deal) like the NCRS book shows but in perfect condition. Thanks to George Brami he gave me the oil filter, very good person. I have all the knock outs from the keys also. I have one set with knock outs still in the keys, power key also. Back to the wheel locks I have the bag the instructions even the cardboard backing that came in the bag also. Thanks again for all the info keep it coming so I don't miss anything. Kirk

Jeff, that's after you get the crossed flags (can only try for that once.). Need to flight judge it first. I am on my way to XFlags on my 3000 mile 84. A chapter meet will not hurt in any way. In fact you will have a much better idea at the end of the chapter if Xflags is in reach or not. The PV part is the hard part on the Xflag. The first requirement for Xflag is a McLellean Award which requires at least 2 Top Flights (Regional and National) and a Performance Verification at a regional.

Kirk that 100 mile drive to meet will help your raw score. Sounds like you have the filters all taken care of. Judges love to see those original non service oil filters.

Here is a video of my 84 going through the Denver Regional last year. IT is a lot of fun....

Kirk, Congradulations on getting the car. I have a 90 Z with 790 miles on it, and it received a 99% Top Flight at the 2007 Charlotte Regional. It passed the PV at the 2007 Texas Regional, and it was awarded the McLellan, with another 99 % score. The car is original, except for the battery and the oil filter. My oil filter did not have the bar code, but it was a Duraguard PF970-C and not a PF 970. I only lost 2 points for it. I also lost 10 points for the service replacement battery. Most of the rest of the deductions were due to not having enough time to clean it after towing it on an open trailer.
I agree with everything that has been said, except I didn't have to take the factory floor mats out, or remove the wheel lock nuts. I took the fire extinguisher out and put it with the Pizza Box, Air Filter and other stuff on a blanket behind the car. The extra points that you get for driving to the meet will not count when getting the McLellan Award. The hardest thing that I experienced was the PV, where every thing had to work, or the car fails. I had to replace the diaghram on the seat air pumps, and the headlight actuator plastic cylinderical bushings. I also put about a 100 miles on it making sure every thing worked right.

Good luck, I don't think that you will have any problem with the judging.

The way the judging works with the locking wheel lugs is:
1. Have them in the bag
2. have them on the car and have 4 standard lug nuts in the bag.
All this just has to be available for judging, not in any magic location, BTW. we just want to see what you have, not that it's in any particular location. All the stuff in the glove box needs to come out anyeays for inspection, so if it's out beforehand, it's that much les work and time. We only get about 45 minutes (60 at tops) to judge any one section of a car, so there's a ot that fly under the radar.

Kirk, I assume Tony got everything back together for you. Did you end up using any of the injectors from my 91? How did you end up resolving your cat issue?

Good Luck,
Scott

Hi Scott, yes I used some of the injectors, they were fine thanks so much. As for the cat Mark H said not to worry to much about it, it will not hurt the performance of the car. It will most likely not pass emissions though. No big deal the people at emissions just wave the car anyway. Why don't you try to come to the event that day, would like to see all of you guys that day it is a very nice ride. Thanks Kirk

It's exciting to hear that you are getting your car judged. I'm going to try and make it to the event also. I've got a lot to learn and watching you go thru the process will really help when I try it. Good luck.

Hi Kirk, I have run two cars through the NCRS judging system , The last was my 90 ZR-1 with 8000 miles. It passed Mclellan judging in 2006 and Crossed Flags in 2007. The Zs judge exactly the same as any C4. The hardest thing is to get everything to work for Opps check and PV. Most deductions during judging will be for condition issues. Be sure any service replacement parts are GM. Tom Barr is the National Team Leader for 90 to 93 and is very knowledgeable on ZR-1s. You can contact him with judging questions. His info is on NCRS web site. Feel free to contact me if I can be of any help
