With the Z on the lift for the winter I noticed a leak at the pinion seal. This looks to be fairly simple, remove exhaust, driveshaft, then replace seal. But is anything easy. Coments Advise Also while there what else should be done.

Thought it was perfect after this last summer after Marc did the p&p, headers, exhaust, injectors,etc. then had it buffed to a nice shine.Previsely done was 410s ,short thow shifter and of course radio and lombar pumps.
I guess there is alwarys something to do.:blahblah:

Tim, you need to talk with Mark Haibeck about this job. Had mine done about 2 months ago by a differential shop at Marc's suggestion. Seems there is some kind of Crush sleeve that can be damaged, don't remember all the details.

You want to speak to the person who did your 4.10 install! What brand of gears did you buy? There's three pinion pre-load arrangements depending on the build. Shims at both bearings original Dana, a 70mm tall crush-sleeve by generally the "lesser" vendors and a 16mm collar used by the later Dana builds including Vette and Viper.

Crush-sleeves and collars are generally considered "one-time" devices!

Thank You for your replies. Looks like it goes back to the shop. Gears are viper from dodge dealership. Was wondering why its leaking after 2 years and maybe 2k mi. Thought it was a reputable shop but who knows. Will e-mail Marc also. Part numbers anyone? Just to make sure they get it right this time. Again Thanks

I wouldn't jump so rapidly on the installer! Where is it "leaking" and how badly? The sealing surface to the pinion flange, the outer seal to the housing or does it appear to be that the splines of the pinion gear to the yoke might be seeping. I'd clean the area well and then observe!

A "leak" demands attention, if it were just a "seep", my rear was quiet and I was happy with the build I'd likely mention it in conversation and keep an "eye" on it.

Marc was of the same opinion,although there is some spray in the tunnel so I think it needs attention. Dosen't look like much but it will attract dirt. I think that is what i am going to do, clean it as best I can, drive it and then recheck. Thanks for your reply

Hey Tim,

It doesn't cost anything to "check the vent". I did a differential job today and it was one of the parts I mentioned to him to check while he was there! The rear does need to "breathe", it's a rather "violent life" inside!!
