Has anyone seen this vid. There's never a shortage of ZR-1 drag racing video's. But its nice to see the king aggressivly racing against other fast cars and actually passing them up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbqDS78zeQw

Love watching that...the ZR driver has talent...he was forced off line on several occassions and handled like 'no sweat'...
Also, when you finish watching that go to the ZR1 GT2 Ferrari 599 GTR shootout and then top speed runs... fun but in particular watching the odo role 1 mile after another in seconds =D>

Thanks for the link! That was sweet!
Kudos to that Z driver. He kept it together under some very sticky situations. He stuck the Z in places that I would never have the nerve to put it. I particularly liked the pick he pulled on the orange porsche....slick move & great guess. That big Merc was trying for all it had to stay infront, too.
What struck me was the amount of wheel spin that Z was generating off of some of the slower speed exits....wonder what his laps would be like with some sticker tires?

Any ideas who owns/racing the car? That would be great to find out more about the car...would make a great magazine or newsletter feature.

Looks like he's got a full roll cage in that Z also. If you look at the passenger side pillar and the roof you can see it. What does he have mounted on the dash?

Stupendously ragged driving - he uses the throttle and brakes like on-off switches.
Check the Southwest link later; I'll be at Hallett to show y'all how it should be done.
I think the thing on the dash is a g-meter - useless for hot laps because you don't have time to look at it.
Remember: slow in, fast out.

Yeah Glenn, I don't think he's a pro but I sure wish there were more ZR-1 racing vids like this around to enjoy. I would love to take a few lessons from you glenn. What are your plans for that 67 427(I believe) classic gem in your garage? That thing is so sweet and super collectable. While I was eating all of that wonderfull food in your garage I couldn't help but keep staring at it.

the guy might not be that good but he does have the guts of a burgelur . he did a nice pick job on the porsche. i like how at the start he let them pass him and use up their tires then picked them off .i wonder what the benz driver thought when all he saw was yellow in the mirror  along with a BIG TEETH GRIN . then of course just listening to her rev . too bad i have snow on the ground .

Brad, I was kind of thinking that he just came from the pit out?
I had thought that it seemed that he over cooked a few corners at the entry point....but since I've never had my Z on a track I didn't feel I had any standing to critique his effort. The pick on the porsche was fair game IMHO, and the pass on the Merc could have been that the guy in the Merc wanted no part of "the mad man coming up on him"...?
Becareful Brad, HPDE's and / or track days can be more addictive than crack. MHO, road racing is waaaaay more abusive to a car than 1/4 mile work. Specially when you are using a street car to do the road work.
JMHO. I have no hard experience with an LT5, but I question the long term effects of cornering G's on the oiling system's performance with respect to pick-up starvation. I saw first hand what track days did to my 72 LT-1's drive train. I also have a group of crusin buds that have become addicted to track days. These guys are using mostly C5's and C6's. There has been some carnage in their ranks with their LSx motors, except for the C6 ZO6 guys. They don't yet seem to have had trouble, maybe it's the oiling system in the LS7?:dontknow:
I wanna go with them in the worst way, if for nothing else than to get the instruction and all the knowledge that the instructors wanna pass on.....but I know me, I'll get addicted and be worried about the motor...heck the whole car would worry me.:o

Tom are you aware that our cars have special baffles in the oil pan to prevent oil starving the cars in high G-force situations just like pure race cars do. Thats probably why they take 12 quarts of oil. I don't think I would worry about the Z breaking because I swear the harder I push mine the more she likes it and the better she runs. The LT5 in my Z has never let me down and runs flawlessly at WOT and purs like a kitten while idling at the stop lights. It's always seems to be the external B.S that breaks on a ZR-1 but never the LT5. It's just an amazing engine.:worship: I would worry more about looseing control and smacking into the wall.

i totally agree about the worry factor about abusing the car. and you are right about that guy being a mad man, either that or he is a taxi driver in manhatten .some of his moves remind me of cab rides from kennedy to manhatten those guys are truly nuts

Brad, I hear ya about the NYC cabbies! Danny Sullivan...:sign10: I also hear what you're saying about beating on our motors. I know if my Z spent it's whole life driving around in suburbia where I live, the car would run like crap! She never runs & sounds better as when I take her to the upstate NY back roads & thrash her thru the two lane twisties....and that's a mild thrashing at that! NYS Troopers are sneaky people...;)
Rick, I was under the impression from my parts CD that the 90 pans are the least baffled. The 91 pan seems to have more than the 90 pan, and finally the 93-95 pans have left & right side baffles, and fr & rear baffles. All of them have a windage tray. This is what I get from studying the parts CD. I should admit that I've never actually seen the inside of an LT5's oil pan. Oh, and I never actually taken my 90's pan down & looked inside it.:o
Ya know I was thinking that I should go re-read Lee's thread as there might be something on the oil pan in that thread.

The C5, C6 and C6 Z06 all have baffles incorporated into the pans. Still the C5 had an issue with oil sliding around to the edges of the batwing design. Chevy revised the pan for the C6. It still has some oiling problems on extreme sustained G corners. The C6 Z06, also has some oiling issues, but their main issue was with capacity, which has been fixed by GM for 09 with a larger reservoir.
The LT5 loves to be abused on the track. I let Dwight use my car this past summer for an event. I got booted off the track with my race car after my second session, so we started double stinting my car with no issues. Do not be scared to track these cars. Just be scared of your ability.
As far as this guy, he has good control, but he is hot into the corners, and is tearing the hell out of his tires and losing time as he does it. Smooth and consistent.

Does it sound like his ABS kicks in under braking almost regardless of how fast he's going when he starts to brake? I wonder if he's got a pretty serious brake upgrade going on?
Pretty neat video. I have no standing to critique his driving. However, I can say I'd have a hard time being 10 inches off the bumper of the car in front of me, while burying the gas pedal into the carpet!

Jeff.....:eusa_shhh...don't tell me that an LT5's oiling system is up to road work.....because I'm addicted to road racing without ever actually doing it. You're gonna make me go get a helmet,......and do other foolish stuff.......or at least consider it, strongly...
For real, I'm miss reading the parts CD????? At the P/N side it lists mod yr application & quantity if necessary....Baffles, baffles, my oil pan has oil control appendages????

It is up to snuff, other than the oil cooler which has been debated here in the past.
Here is the shot of a late model pan.

The LT5 can handle the G loads. I have a friend in the Chicago area with a stock 91 that has at least 25k miles of solid track abuse and it's still running fine. The trick is to keep enough oil in the pan. You start a weekend one quart over full and never let the level go below full. 300 track miles later the level will be back to full.
My 91 has at least 5k track miles and it's just broken in.

Awesome video!!! Since I am retiring in 81 days I should have time to do some autocross and track events. Not sure about using the Z so will probably train in my 92 coupe which is set up for track to some extent.

I agree with Glenn. I "raced" #364 a number of times at TWS and by keeping the oil on full after starting a little over full, never had an oiling problem. When I was "racing" at TWS, we were allowed to pass only on the straights, not in the corners. Also, you had to have the driver you were passing wave you by. This was to prevent any 2 car crashes. The only time I raced TWS and could do a little more risky passing was when I went out with NASA Texas at TWS and drove with the "instructor" group. Then we were allowed a little more as the other drivers knew what they were doing and you could expect them to do the "right" thing. Another time at TWS a bunch of ZR-1 owners particularly Paul Smith rented TWS for a day. It rained hard that day but we still got in some good track time. Marc Randolph and I played together nearly all day. Glenn was there too. SW brought his C5 and took about 20 people on hot laps in the rain. SW can drive. I tried to stay up with him but no chance. By the end of the day the track had mostly dried up and Marc and I really got to go at it. My car had a little more power and he drove better in the places where the track still had some wet spots. I had trouble with dry wet dry. I took passengers with me as did nearly everyone. My driving was better when the track was completly wet or completely dry. While still wet, took one passenger for a couple of hot laps. First lap he was fine, then I picked up the pace a little. He had a little more trouble with that lap. Coming out of turn 2 you crossed over a dip and that gave interesting feelings as the Z would go airborne slightly and rpms would jump as wheels spun. Also rearend would step out just a little. Passenger got a little up tight right there. :-) Boy that was a fun day. Marc put his Z in the weeds coming out of turn 3. SW took a cute girl for a ride and did a 360 at about 100 in turn 1. I bet she never rode with him again. :-)
