Cam Shafts are fine. I'll let Robert tell the rest of the tale - he is the one with the story! It is a freak failure - I've not seen it before.

Did someone think you hammered in the cam cover bolts???????????

Hey, lets cut to the chase, I'm getting alittle paranoid:jawdrop:

What happened was the rear camshaft retaining cap broke off and was subsequently caught up on a cam lobe and driven into the cover. The result as you can see is a pretty big hole in the cover. The cap is still in place with both bolts securly fastened, it was the center section of the cap that fractured and came off. My guess is some sort of casting defect or stress crack is the root cause, no other damage is apparent. I never heard anything funny and the car drove just fine. Had I not noticed the wisps of smoke from the buring oil coming from under hood I would have just kept on driving - unaware of any problem. I have already repaired the cover with an artfully welded on patch, should be almost invisible once it's cleaned up and repowdered. Since I'm into the motor though I'll be taking this opportunity to make some upgrades including some additional head porting and a set of Pete's camshafts.

Rob, what were the operating parameters of the motor when it let go, i.e., were you hammering on it, driving in your usual sedate manner, etc.? Post pics of the repair.

Cruising on the freeway in 6th gear when I noticed the problem, don't think it was induced by any throttle mashing.

Will find out when we bust it loose. Either a casting flaw, over torqued, or some dip used the retainer to seat the cams instead of the special tools.

May I ask a novice question?

The only cam shafts I've ever seen came out of sbc iron motors from antiquity. I used to hear mechanics refer to something called "leoparding". Those tiny black spots on the cam lobe pictured are normal or is that what those guys were talking about?

TIA :worship:
