Part of the undercarriage of my ZR-1 has what appears to be some black undercoating. It is primarily in the area of the footwells. Some of the undercoating overspray extend into the transmission tunnel. I've seen photos that others have posted of the undercarriage of their cars. Some appear to have no evidence of this, others do.

Does anyone know why some cars have this and others don't? Any idea what the purpose was?

My '90 has it too.
It could be a couple of things, maybe it was put on at the stealership where it was originally sold.
Or, maybe the factory put it on cars destined for northern states where salt could eat at the metal under-carriage.
I dunno, just guessing.

Here is my 90 ZR (which was sold in 11/89 by Mahler Chevrolet in Florida) which has something akin to a black spray on the front foot well area but as you can see the area immediately behind where the spray is has none...>>>

Also, it does appear that there can be a variations in production...minor by as example in the area of the coolant tank I have seen some look like raw (unpainted) panel; some painted (more like overspray) body colored and some (like mine) finished in the satin black like the under part of the engine bay hood>>>
