View Full Version : Shift Lights, Set At What Max RPM??

Hi guys,
One thing missing from my car is Shift Lights, I've seen some on Ebay that have 5 sequential lights (green, green, green, amber, red (large)) and can wire into my tacho pretty easily but wondering at what level these should be set?

This device can be set at any interval but must be the same space apart e.g. for 200rpm it would be:
4800, 5000, 5200, 5400, 5600 etc.

I guess if someone could comment on the max rpm (redline) then I'll work backwards, probably in the 200rpm intervals.

Thanks in advance,
Robin.

My shift light is just an on or off type light. Rev limiter is at 7400rpm while shift light comes on at 6800. allows for reaction time. 1st gear with the 4.10's is still a challenge.

first ?is your motor mostly stk except headers . if it is i would set the shift light at 6500 . as i have found that to be the best rpm to create the fastest times at the strip . if you have or get ported inj housings and plenum you can raise it too 6800. if you are drag racing you might find as i have that short shifting first to second @6300 to iimprove ets 1.5-.2 tenths due to the fact you dont spin the tires like when you take it to 6800. chris was telling me you were wondering where you could get some mods done .porting of the inj housings and plenum are a good start . then i would suggest corey henderson. he did an excellent job on mine .his ph is 210 867 6286 . he could also do your heads ,if you either have someone who has knowledge of timming the cams after it is done

My engine is basically stock 'cept the headers and intake. I don't do drag racing but lots of trackdays instead. I'm not really keen to have the Top shift light on at max revs but 6500 sound sensible.
Is Corey in the UK? Sounds like a US number to me?
Thanks for the info anyhow...

Edit: ignore me, I assumed this was a ZR-1 we were talking about.

Thanks for the info anyhow...yes it is a us phone number but i will bet if you called him and set it up with him he could do a fairly fast turn around for you he could even give you a prom to match what he has done porting wise . to give you an example of his porting excellance my car made 372rwhp before he ported my inj housings and plenum and after with his tunning made 409.9 wrhp a 38 hp increase . if you have a fax number i would be more than happy to send you a copy of the actuall dyno sheet for you to look at . i think your shift redline of 6300 to 6500 would promote a long and happy engine life . i do just love your car i will bet it is almost impossible to get out of . very nice job . i am am wishfull that one day i could do one for myself

409 with just PP of injector housings and plenum, something is awry?

before the porting the car had jeal headers fidanza flywheel and haibeck prom . corey dynod just before we took it apart to port then when he was done he put it on the dyno and tuned the car for best output . if you have a fax number you would pm me i would be more than happy to send you a copy of the dyno sheet from when he did it .or you can call corey yourself and he will confirm my numbers. just ask him what brads car did . his ph is 210 867 6286. car now makes 431 rwhp with the change from the flowmaster system that was on the car then to the custom spin tec system with a dr gas xpipe that is on the car now .also there are vids of the black car on utube just type in joeshmoe12301230 in the search box . car has run a best of 11.78@119.85mph but sadly dont have vids of that run . but the mph is a testament as to coreys fine work which is in the vids. those vids were done in aug when the temps at famoso were in the 90s and the da was in the 2700 ft range

I believe you have the dyno sheets but those numbers just don't make sense to me unless you just have a beastly LT-5 from the factory.

Are your heads done?

You should be in the 400-410 range. Maybe you just have a really strong LT-5.

Robin, what are the ratios in the transmission & differential?

jonszr1

no they arent done . corey did say i had one of thehighest hp cars he had done . in fact the car has 157k on it now . corey would be proably be the best person to share about my car. my callaway 475 super natural made 373 wrhp stk. and ran 12.78 @113.88 stk. after stainless works headers and cat install it has run a best of 12.48 @116.47. the black car also has 4.10s the callaway has 3,92s . i am going to change out the headers and exhaust from the black car and put on the callaway and see what the difference is for fun . the jeal headers seem to have longer and more equal length pipes . other than that i dont know what to say other than that is the results that we got .hope this helps

the spin tec guys did an awsome job on the exhaust . they used 23/4 in pipe instead of 3 in saying unless i made a bunch more power 3 in would take alot of low end out of the car their exhaust made 22 more hp than the flowmaster system .

Robin, what are the ratios in the transmission & differential?

Jeff,
It's a G50/OO, 1st, 2nd and 3rd are lengthened 4th and 5th as standard, this was done before I brought the car though.

Not sure what the ratios are, have a sheet somewhere but suspect it's in a box in the loft with a load of invoices my wife can never see!!

I do find the 5th gear a little short and thinking of getting 4th and 5th changed upwards to suit though.

Standard is:G50/00 3.5 2.059 1.409 1.074 0.861

Funny enough I was just looking at a shift light that worked on a combination of speedo and gear selection, Could be adjusted for different shift times depending on gear, sounds good but a little complicated for me to fit.

Robin, it really depends upon your gearing where you need to shift. See if you can get the ratios and we can go from there.

This isn't the first time we've been through this conversation on Brad's car. He even posted up the dyno sheet here once I think. Two things I can remember, 1) Corey's #'s are corrected to STD, I think. and 2) there was an anomoly at the end of the run when the throttle was shut which spiked the indicated RWHP to the 409.9. Going from memory, but I think that was the essence of the discussion.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

EDIT: my memory is slightly failing. Here is the thread. Wasn't Brad's car, but I would guess same phenomenon would be seen in his graph. we know it is corrected to STD, not SAE.

I'm just saying it seems odd, like they are not corrected numbers but what do I know :handshak:

They are corrected but, to STD not SAE. STD numbers read a little higher than SAE. I always thought that they sounded high too but, you can't argue with 120 MPH trap speeds.

you are right they are corrected to std. but there is no spike at the end . i need someone that can give me a fax number that will post the sheet for me .the car does seem very strong running between 119-120.5 even when the das are 2500+. the spin tec custom exhaust i had done was the icing on the cake .it is loud but when she runs that good who cares:mrgreen:

I guess when i say corrected I mean SAE.

Those are the numbers I use when I talk about RWHP.

Either way, the #'s are respectable.

is there a way to correct them to sae. on the sheet is temp and humidity?????/
