Howdy, guys. Thought I would share some pictures as the pieces are slowing arriving for my spare LT5 buildup. The induction system is out being ported as we speak. I know my limitations...I'll let an expert build the bottom end and assemble the motor, but I need the market to turn around first to free up more capital!

Carrillo tapered H-beam rods. Stock rods weigh close to 750g, Olivers are around 650g. These are around 550g. The 4.00" Bryant crank has 2.00" journals.

Custom ATI super damper. Yes, it took over 2 months after the drawings were approved. The three pieces are the damper, pulley, and crank hub. It is about 20% lighter altogether than the OEM piece.

And last the mechanical buckets.... about half the weight of the GM hydraulics. Still not entirely decided to go this direction. Need to decide this spring before I order cams. The small pieces are the shims for lash clearance adjustment.

I forgot to snap pics of the new springs and Ti retainers. Will try to get that later.

tpepmeie,
Great pics and thanks for sharing.
Should be able to see some real high revs and power with the lighter valve train components.
Can you tell us where you found the mechanical buckets and Ti retainers?
And what piston/liner combo will you be going with and what is the power target?
Fascinating project.
Please keep us posted.

Great choice on the rods. I`m running a set of them in a 10 second dragboat with a 496 chevy. Also have another set of them here to turn a 1992 Chevrolet 454 SS pickup into a 496 SS.

Not to butt in...... This is my 402 build.

i deal with ATI on my higher end stuff. they really seem to be on top of the game right now, great stuff. been fair with me too, that's never a bad thing. your Dampr looks like it tuned out very nice, Todd. you happy how it turned out? i can't tell for sure...did you go with an aluminum hub?

Todd. Fastlane spent a ton of money and time on trying to do mechanical lifters and finally gave up. He felt the extra work needed to get the lash right did not justify the end gain.

TylerI, generally, hate hydraulic lifters but mechanicals on an LT-5 can be a real PIA. if it was a steel (cast iron) deal well...it might (probably) be a different story. solids are, rough & dirty, most likely worth +4%-5% gain, all things being equal, which they never are. which way are you leaning, Todd?

Happy New Year
Very cool stuff Todd.
I always enjoy seeing new stuff, like a kid in a candy store.

I also kicked the idea of solid lifters but decided against it,i hope you can do it.

I'm also really interested in the damper.
Can you give me some more info.

My Z is all apart would love to put in a new light weight damper.

The basic damper is the ATI p/n 917020, a 2-ring aluminum 7" unit. That's the easy part... the crank hub and pulley are custom made for the LT5. I went with a steel hub, rather than Aluminum, per their recommendation.

Hows the build going Todd.

Snail's pace. This market is killing me.

Waiting on the induction system back from the head shop, (still). Next hardware to order will be the pistons, probably from CP, but I need the final chamber volume to figure the dish.

Got a sample of the final valvetrain pieces now, retainers, springs & seats, locks, and bucket followers. The valves are o/s stainless with 7mm undercut stems.

At this point, I might just concede and do the 402 rather than the big bore 427. Either would be more than enough power. I have to decide if the extra cubes are worth cubic dollars!

How's yours?

I really like the 427/441 Al is working on. The price is more at a range I could work with. The liners and block work look good from the pictures he posted.

How's yours?

Hurry and wait. My bearings are at Calico for C-1 coatings. I sent them a set of Kings, GM, and Clevite. One thing after anther

Figured you would be doing a bit of traction control code for the ecm to keep from burning up the tires at every stoplight. You see the post on the LS 2 coils? Looks like an answer to ignition module failures as I think its the heat that gets them.

I'm just lucky to own a ZR-1 and being all I can be already.:handshak: I am maxed out and don't even know what I would do if my LT5 needed a rebuild. At least I'm not alone. Well, living in Hawaii doesn't help with the high cost of living we have here....how about paying $650,000 for an average home. I got in under the Equal Opportunity ZR-1 Owner Program too; I'm on of the low bid Ebay guys. :blahblah:

Hey Polo,
Can you update us on how is the 402 build is coming along?

Polo-1

Sure

The top end should be done 2-3 weeks
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y292/kpie/KP2.jpg

The block is in Spokane now. They need to make tq plate for the block. I think he said it will be 4" T-6.

ARP studs for the bottom end are a no go. I tried to have them made, no luck. I'm to small of a order, I guess. I wanted 5 sets made, no luck.

Ron Woods is working on having them made ( multiples ).

Everything on the LT5 just takes forever to get done. It has not been a cash shortage on my end. I guess if I did all the work myself it would go faster. I don't have Rottler boring and Sunnen honing tools. As porting, I'm only OK at it. I want this little 402 hit 625-640 (motor hp) then the NOS on top.

How yours doing Todd

How yours doing Todd

Things are moving now. Block is in Chicago and now waiting pistons. Crank is getting ground down, also waiting pistons for final balancing. Heads are, well, closer. Should have final chamber volume today so that I can finally get the pistons ordered. Cams are waiting flow numbers from the heads. It is all interdependent.... If I don't get these heads back soon. 15 months and counting. Better be worth it.

Funny, I also went down the ARP main stud path. They finally stopped returning my calls.

??????
Stock crank ground down to 2.00 rod for 3.75 stroke ? Mini stroker ?
Block in Chicago? home of the big bores????

What is your final cube's going to be?:icon_scra

tpepmeie

Heads are nearly final, just need to adjust the velocity a bit at the housing interface and do some higher speed airflow tests. It is really trick how he shaped the port at the entry to cope with that awkward angle.

Final chamber volume ends up at 49cc's.

Pistons are on order now.

Great work Todd.

One thing comes to mind reading all the posts. Remember all the bashing about how long it took to get a stroker built? Now that you guys are doing your own and encountering the same type of delays, it put it into proper perspective.

BTW, I am going to have full siamesed plenum gaskets made that are oversized on the outside shape (to cover the welded up areas, and undersized on the inside port area, so that they can be trimmed to fit each individual engine since the port configurations vary.

Unfortunately, these were ordered without the valve reliefs -- a mistake by the builder . We've ordered a second lot with the correct valve reliefs. I also took the opportunity to make a few other tweaks to the design.

These will be for sale soon. Even w/o valve reliefs, they will handle some moderate cams.

I just bought a nicely ported set of heads with trick valves for $100 seller told me the owner forgot them at his shop. :)

Todd, your more then welcome to them.

Really i'm sorry to hear about your heads.
