View Full Version : How bad is it at GM

This is an email I received from a friend at GM regarding the sale of some of the heritage collection at Barret Jackson. I know we have a thread going on about the Snake Skinner, but this is a complete list of what is currently going to be sold. The list is pretty damn scary.

Here is the email.

To: Camaro/Firebird2008@gm.com
Subject: GM Heritage Collection Sale...........
Scott Settlemire
Date: Wed, 17 Dec 2008 13:55:08 -0500

Good afternoon, Camaro Comrades, Firebird Friends, and Corvette Cousins............

As you may know, the GM Heritage Collection numbers in the many hundreds of cars and trucks - from 'first builts' and 'last builts' to one-off show cars to SEMA show cars.

The Decision has been made to sell off select vehicles. (Indeed, a sad day for some of us......)

There's a little of everything -- from the Legendary Buick Blackhawk -- to (are you sitting down?) a COUPLE of 1989 Corvette ZR1s -- the Jon Moss built Track-dominating Black 572 ZL1 -- A C5 Alpha and a C5 Beta -- The Tiger Shark -- the LT5 Camaro -- a 1904 Olds Touring -- several GTOS -- both old and new -- a couple of 1970 muscle cars -- a mid nineties "510" Impala SS -- and many, many pace cars and trucks.

This may be the time to break open the piggy bank.................

PLEASE NOTE:

>This is a preliminary list -- it is very likely subject to change -

>Barrett-Jackson will, in the coming week or two, put out pictures of each of these cars on their website.

>This is the Scottsdale, AZ auction -- January 13-19, 2009.

>Please feel free to share with your club members and friends

Holy Sheit! Those are all the "holy grails" of ZR-1's. DR-1, Active, Purple Smash! is the ZR-2 the Falconer V-12?

Oh to be flush with Ca$h!

Even the rolling chassis?? These all belong at the NCM, but will probably never been seen again...

I've got a phone call into Adam at the Museum. Half the building will be empty.

ZR-2 was the 454 Vert with the hardtop.

I think it might be the smash and somebody fat fingered it. But the Purple Smash was a 91.

They were two separate items 89 Splash, and then farther down the list is the Purple Smash.

I wonder what the current economic situation world wide will do to the value of these once untouchable cars?

The bigger question is how will selling all of these rare or exclusive vehicles help GM? :dontknow:. I have no idea what they might bring at the auction but somehow I think it would be a drop in GM's bucket and then what? And where does the leave the Corvette Museum? I am not bright enough to have the answers but on the surface this seems very wrong.

Wow, unbelieveable. Sad time indeed.

True words....it has come to this. I can't even fathom what could be helped by this liquidation. I know when you're broke & in debt, every little bit helps. Even if the sale of every one of those cars yields a billion dollars in net to GM.....set that against the GM corporate debt paper out in the market at about 63 billion.

I hate to say this but, I think that GM is insolvent.

I completely agree to Ryans statement. I suspect this is the real reason behind this however it has to be pulling on some of GMs heartstrings for some of their personnel. I know cars are just items but I have to believe in some reguards this measure is probably to some folks at GM like losing a child.

Possibly more of it is savings in terms of not maintaining and storing all these? I imagine they have some staff dedicated to nothing but that.

Or maybe it's just symbolic, or perhaps they want to get rid of them before they end up part of some bankruptcy proceedings... :dontknow:

Good points Bob. I would say it's best to find "good homes" for the cars before the chapt 11 takes place....although, a chapt 11 judge would not let those cars go cheaply. Those judges have connections for "expert" consultation on assets of any type & class. I doubt that there would be any freebies in that liquidation.

I'll bet that if one looked hard enough thru the GM annual report that one might find the line item charge for the maintenance of that collection, unless it's a seperate corporation.

It's still a sad day to me that the situation has come to this point....not just GM, but the domestic auto mfg's as a group. :(

This is true and a very good point. I thought they had to crash test so many for a production car. Well if the car never really was a prouction car like the 89 ZR's then what? I bet the ZR2 car is just a production Conv and it has a normal VIN. I thought some of these 89's cars since they never really went into production were suppose to be crushed and not sold to the public. I'm sure there might be some fine print some where but maybe not. This will be one of the best BJ's ever.

I thought I read the Performance Parts Division was a cash cow for GM; you'd think they would milk it for all its worth.maybe some stuff was but not the crate engines, i would continuously get into it with guys about that. i KNOW what it costs to build these things & the way i build them it's more than what GM would be selling them for. guys would say ' i can buy a crate engine for so & so ' i'd say have at er'. i'm not working for free, sorry. but on the other hand i'm not declaring chapter 11 anytime soon either. IMO on the whole subject, not that anyone asked, the unions are mostly responsible for sucking the U.S. car manufacturers into this mess, & it is a mess.
