View Full Version : The Rarest ZR-1 of All?

Came across something today which brought back a few memories…

It was early ’95 when I got the call from Chevrolet World Headquarters that my request for a meeting had been granted. A couple of weeks later I found myself at Detroit Metro airport with a brand new ’94 Admiral Blue 6 speed coupe waiting for me. The guy at the lot said “Man, you must BE somebody!” Yeah, I was just a guy from the desert who thought he could do something that Chevy never did. Celebrate something from the past….

Amidst the planning of the final ZR-1, “The Legend Lives” event began to take on a lot of attention from GM. They even made chocolate bars in the shape of the ZR-1 emblem. When they asked if they could provide anything else, my mind raced. Hey, when does Chevy make an offer like that!? What do they have that we could use? I kept the offer in the back of my mind….

We thought of the photo op but we had too many cars to do it right. There were some 400 cars there and so the idea came to me to do a photo with all those attending, standing behind a lineup of every single color ZR-1 ever produced. And so it was….almost.

Yes, just when we had it all planned and laid out, I remembered there was a color we never saw produced on a ZR-1. There were problems matching the color to the fascia as I remember, so Copper Metallic was only available on the non-ZR-1 models. In 1994, only 116 total cars were painted code 66. But there WAS a ZR-1 painted Copper Metallic because I had once driven the car at Bowling Green on a “test drive”.

So I remembered the offer from Chevy and made the call. “You guys have a Copper ZR-1 somewhere and we want it!” I said. Soon the calls came in from all over about various cars and colors but no Copper Metallic was to be found. John Heinricy finally called and said he thought he remembered the car going to the crusher some months back. So much for the only Copper Metallic ZR-1 in existence.

After the event I received a package with a return address of Bowling Green, KY. I carefully opened it to find something tightly wrapped in foam. Ever so carefully I cut and peeled to reveal a treasure. There in my hands were two brand new emblems. One was the large “CORVETTE” and the other the small “ZR-1” which went on the rear fascia of a ZR-1…a Copper Metallic ZR-1!!

Inside was an anonymous note which read simply:
“Best we could do. The only ones.”

I would guess it would be a fair thing to say that you still have those emblems somewhere....

LPE385 on the CF has posted that he has these. Unless of course LPE385 is infamous JVD over there. Ha.

Kurt White, who has evidently returned from the dead, has the CORVETTE emblems in Copper Metallic available.

Yea I'm here, those aren't the only Copper Met. emblems around . I have two brand new NOS Copper Met. ZR-1 emblems and one Corvette rear Copper emblem. I ordered these brand new from Chev. back in 94 when we too wanted to order one. My dealer said they were the only emblems showing in the entire GM parts system. I had pic's posted on the CF about 2 months ago. I spoke with John Heinrcy as well and he said there was one built. Someone told me years and years ago that John had the rear bumper to that car in his office at one time???

Well shame on me, I should have known that. I have seen a few posts here from him, but not about the Copper Metallic Emblems. Sorry

What about the factory Yellow one with red interior. I can't remember the year. It's still around somewhere.

Its a 94, also a 94 admiral blue with red. Someone bought that a year or so ago and posted pictures somewhere I remember seeing here or the forum. Someone also claimed a yellow 94 or 95 with white interior, never saw pictures though. Also heard of a 93 quasar with white, never verified though.

Heres a story, did you know Corvette was using the new (at the time) Camaro airbags in some ZR-1 test mules. I was at the factory in late 92 production right before 93's were being built and ventured off the tour to look at the wildest set of wheels I had ever seen on a ZR-1. They were the A-Mold 5 stars on a Dark Red/Saddle 94 ZR-1. Now remember its about June of 1992. The color wasn't real Dark Red but it was close and it had full 94 interior with the new generation 93 Camaro airbag and steering wheel, I was shocked. One of the factory workers was going over the car before it was being shipped out to be CRASHED TESTED!

Thats a good question. I don't know what GM does with their crash test cars. They either parted that thing out and use different items for tests, cut away displays or its sitting in a GM bone yard somewhere.
