well.....my 92 got collected from southampton docks today....with what appears to be a very noticeable knock at idle (probable cause to be confirmed but a knock is a knock and they are never little problems)....l havent had the chance to drive it to see if goes away after a quick thrash (car has been undriven for 2 months and on a ship)

getting the motor rebuilt will be all but impossible here (due to there not being too many knowlegable LT5 mechs in UK) Sooooooooo!

looking to see if there are any resonably priced reliable motors around for sale......l dont have the spare cash this moment for a crate engine but if one were available l would like to know anyway

Ron Hanselman has a used 91 model engine for sale. ron@raptorllc.net

Your knock may not be the engine. It could be the dual mass flywheel with the rubber dampeners gone bad.

Thanks Jerry.....

I forgot about the flywheel as an option....could be.....are there any other symptoms for this that l can get checked out....from memory recall l seem to remember that while annoying it doesnt make the car undriveable

but if not that l will make the other contacts re motors.....thanks guys....much appreciated....As ever the ZR1 community never fails to help a brother

Don't be put off by the 4 cam motor. Opening the hood to work on the LT5 once concerned me, now I would have no issues with pulling the motor and stripping it down and I'm just a self taught owner. As many service books and service videos you can lay your hands on are your friends ;)

Yep...lve got all the manuals :read2:....and they are the biggest manuals lve seen :jawdrop:

but you are right....if l need to its best to just get stuck in and do it.

after all what can l break that aint already broke....hmmmm....on an LT5....plenty!

I've still got the spare short motor covered and regularly turned in the corner of my garage that I bought from you 5 years ago JP, she cleaned up nice.

Yep I understand your concerns ;)

To simplify the LT5, and this works for me, I break the motor down to three main groups - HG down = 'short motor', the HG up = 'top-end'. And 'Sensors'.

The Top-end is probably the more involved with it's A/ quad cam set-up, B/ secondary system, C/ Injector system and D/ plugs to coil pack system.

Luckily there are a few long term owners in the UK now who know the LT5 and if you ever need to copy tools I have the relevant ones that I had made up.

Regards.

Hi Lotus

I know you have that short block but lm presently interested in a whole engine. From the view point of either having the option to drop an engine in fast if l needed to, or to have a whole engine to rebuild....but appreciate the reminder...its noted

Hopefully from what lm hearing from Zreg members, the reported clonking may only be DM flywheel related. at best a misfire from a bad plug or duff injector, or at worst a replacement flywheel. And it would seem that the fidanza replacement option gives you all the clonks anyway

As for biting the bullet and getting stuck into a rebuild. I have no doubt l can do it (with a lot of help) a bit like being at the top of a high dive board....take a deep breath and jump in.

I will have to drive over for a beer with you when lm next back in UK

Hi Scimitar,

;) I know you want a full motor, I was just reminiscing over the short motor and how long ago I bought it from Johnny, D**n time goes so quick

Brett aka UKZR1 runs a ZR-1 down in East Kent, just across the estuary from you. Hopefully we can all meet at a show, or arrange a ZR-1 UK/Europe meet at some time and down the odd tinny.

I suspect its just flywheel noise.

Thanks Brett

was hoping you might chip in.....lm hoping it is flywheel....and from what lm hearing from all around, it is flywheel, either directly or indirectly. l will know in a couple of weeks

re a UK Euro ZR1 meeting......seems thats a tall order

Running it to coincide with the UK Vette nationals weekend at the same show ground might make it more feasable. Definitely something that could be looked into. Also running it on an annual basis could make it a stronger get together. I initiated the " Cruise to the nationals " years back. At first around 15 cars took part - in the end, I think at one point close on 100 vettes attended the annual cruise to the nats.

It'll be the same old faces that turn up. Namely myself,Cliff, maybe Richard, not seen nor heard from Joe in ages. Trouble is there are so few of us spread over the UK. Had a new owner in Essex contact me last week though, wants to join the ZR1netreg.

Here's a link to a gathering we had a few years back. Mine and Richards Z and Malcs Callaway TT. I drove all 3 that day:worship: Yours was off the road then Cliff. Mike had ya top end.

Scimitar, are you back in the UK?

I'll never forget taking Richard out in mine. First thing he did when he got out was kneel down and kiss the ground. Still have his thumb print in my door handle:thumbsup:

:mrgreen: great stuff Brett, I do like the euro lights on Richard's Z, I like the use of all four tail lights.

Would it be an idea to see if we can get a ZR-1 section at the Nationals to try and see if we can get all the Z's together ? There were some ZR-1 owners cars scattered over the field who I never knew, and I've been in the scene 10 years. I could mention it to Richard Rogers. Would this be a start, what do you guys think ?

As a newbie exited with my cars lm all for something special for UK Euro ZR1's, but such a plan should come from you guys who have long been in the scene. lm in for any help l can provide, even tho lm long distance most of the time....but l would propose a ZR1 section in the CCCUK forums

on a european gathering perspective l was corresponding with a guy in spain who says there are 25 there alone....the rest of europe?

one step at a time.
