View Full Version : Plenum gasket glueing

Just fitted a set of new injectors. I need to fit new gaskets this time around. The exsisting one has lasted a couple of plenum pulls but its going to need replacing thios time around.
I have 2 sets an original back set and a pattern set. Having just removed the old set from the plenum it is obvious that Marc had glued it to the plenum. What glue was used?

I don't know what adheasive Marc would have used.
But when I did my plenum pull I used a permatex product that looks like a large lipstick tube. Worked the same as a lipstick, push at the bottom and the adheasive in a stick comes up so you can 'paint' it on the gasket or metal or both. Just like the ladies do a lipstick job on their lips.
The stuff worked great as I had to re-pull the plenum some months later for a code 61 and the plenum came off the I/H's and the gaskets were perfectly intact. I used the permatex "lipstick" on both sides of my plenum & I/H gaskets, water tube gaskets, T-body gaskets and CCVB cover gasket. Just a light coating so it was barely visable.

i use 3-M yellow weatherstrip cement a lot. let it set-up for a minute or so before laying the gasket down. the gasket won't slide around, like silicone, plus it's realitivly easy to clean up, unlike silicone. i usually only use it on one side of the gasket. i've used it for years. don't use the black stuff, only the original yellow works, don't ask my why?

thats a great idea ryan , thanx . i did that on my old mustang to the valve covers as its got a solid lifter cam that needs adjusting from time to time

After replacing my injectors I just installed the gaskets dry. They are White Racing gaskets. Should I have used some sort of sealant? The car is running great.

i saw some plenum, TB, and IH insulator plates for sale at Exotic Muscle. does anybody know more about these? the claim was that the insulate heat better than a regular gasket which would keep the plenum cooler to keep the air charge cooler. anybody used them before?

chris they might help some . but for the price i personally wonder if they are worth it . once the engine compartment gets hot heat soak takes over. at least thats my take on it . randy woods makes them as well as underdrive pullies, as well as thermastates for our cars .

The plenum is ported for a 368 so the gasket needs to be trimmed quite a bit and I cant afford for it to move around at all.
I found this product - Loctite 534, that too comes in a lip stick style tube and sounds like a similar product to the one mentioned.

i questioned whether they would actually help much also, thats kinda why i was asking about them. just to see anyone had any experience with them. last thing i want to do is spend money on products that dont come thru on their claims. :cheers: if anyone has used these, please let me know if you think they are worth it or not.

The car is running great.you don't HAVE to use glue, so don't worry about it now. it just makes it easier to install on some things, plus if you need to trim it's way easier, plus if you ever have wicked back-fire or nitrous sneeze it help's keep the gasket together if you have some thin areas. i use the 3-M stuff i mentioned a lot.
The plenum is ported for a 368 so the gasket needs to be trimmed quite a bit and I cant afford for it to move around at all.
Just an FYI here..... The plenum gaskets I make have 37.5mm port dia., so no need to cut gaskets to fit ported engines. They still retain a narrow port divider and can be used on stock port size as well. They are available in the 0.030" thickness, same as OEM, and ).042" thickness if preferred.
About the 1/4" phenolic spacers; I ran them on my car for awhile and doubt there is any appreciable gain. Makes the alum vac tube on the driver side fit poorly and also means you now need 2 sets of plenum gaskets. Worth the money? I don't think so.

thansk for the info on the phenolic spacers. didn't realize that i would also need a second set of gaskets. gasket thickness of .42 if preffered? why would that be preferred? terribly curious. thanks again

From my perspective, the 1/32" (0.031") thickness is just fine. User preference on the 0.042" thicker gasket. I just make them available.

Sometimes when there has been extensive inlet work to the plenum the heat distorts the mating surfaces with the IH's and the thicker gaskets help with a better seal.
