i have a 93 ZR-1 with a digital display that seems to be on the fritz. no speedo or fuel gauge when this happens. not sure what could be causing this. has anyone seen or heard of this happening? it seems to work fine for a several days and then it will stop working for a day or more and then will come back for several days. the rate at which it comes and goes seems far to spead out to be an electrical short. all the fuses are good...

Any other functions not working correctly? Cycling through the oil temp, coolant temp etc?

Could be a connection issue with the wiring or a possibility of the LCD panel going nuts.
Would have to have the panel and run some tests on it to verify for sure.

the back lighting still works and all that... do i really want to know how much of a pain the dick its going to be to pull that panel out for testing? lol

It's about a 30-45 minute job to pull the panel out.

You can check the codes in the CCM to see if there are any issues.

i really appreciate the help, but i dont know what the CCM is. is it the same process to pull codes for the secondary fuel system/SES light under full throttle problem?

CCM - Central Control Module.
You connect ports A and G and go into module 1.1
Although getting into the CCM is useless unless your lcd panel will function  Then you will need a Tech 1.

so in order to get to the CCM menus, i use the ALDL from A-G jumped and then the CCM menues would show on the digital display? lol. thats awesome. so yeah, guess i will have to get a tech 1. any leads on one of those?

maybe if i am lucky, my display will decide to work tomorrow and then i can use the paper clip method. ...but then, would it even tell me there is a problem? lol.

Tech 1 is roughly about 500 bucks for a complete unit with cartridges.
If your display is working press the trip/odo button until you see 1.1 in the lcd panel. Then hit eng/met to enter. You can use inst/aver to scroll. A C12 indicates no issues. Then you know you have a wiring problem.

Hmm after you drop the steering wheel, driverside Hush panel, Steel reiforcement panel, IH Bezel for the first time.... Maybe... a better estimate is about an hour and 15 minutes and one beer lol

With the exception of the tach the digital display for the MY92-MY93 is the same. I am not sure if that piece only can be pulled from the IH group maybe Jeff knows

jeff i did what you said to do here on holding the trip/odo button but i pressed and held it and it just kept flipping back and forth from odd to trip. i cant get to that menu with the procedure you listed

Make a "U" shape out of the paper clip. Hook one end into the A port on the ALDL and the other end into the G port. Turn the key to the "run" position. This will enable you to enter the CCM diagnostics. The CCM will automatically start cycling through the modules and codes with pauses in between each one. It will give you this information where the digital speedo is.

From what I'm hearing, the displays suffer from failure due to cold solder joints. Pull the display and carefully look for crystallized solder joints and re-solder with a small iron (if you're really brave). Else send it to

for repair. They got my 91 L98 car's working fine after I got tired of fooling around with it for many years. Wifey is happier now that she can see the gas gauge.

i haven't had the chance to do any further trouble shooting or the paper clip method that jeff suggested because i just got it back from the mechanic shop and drove it straight to the body shop for some touch up. while i was driving though, the display was flashing SYS where the instant MPG would be dislpayed and then it would test every possible digital bar on the display all at once. any ideas are appreciated. it would flash SYS like three times and then test the whole display is if power had been turned off momentarily and then i would get all the normal display readings back. 15 to 20 seconds later it would start the process over again. im kind of thinking that i am going to get to see what the dash looks like all torn apart. lol.

Flashing "SYS" is another problem. The CCM is detecting a problem with the chassis wiring. Could be a blown fuse or other simple problem, but you need to pull the error code before you can continue troubleshooting.

yeah i know i need to pull the code. i just haven't had the chance. the whole time i actually had the car, the display wouldn't work. then it started working on the drive to the body shop but it was flashing as i described. hopefully i will be able to get it sorted out when i get the car back.
