What is special about this seal?
I assume when you do headers it HAS to be replaced or can it be reused?

I have the same question.... Aren't they juts an O-ring?
I have the same question.... Aren't they juts an O-ring?
Nope... Can be reused, but they're getting old, splitting, tearing up when re-inserted, etc.
John, sorry I have no news to report yet on getting them made. Been tied up on other matters.

I just installed a set of SW headers on my Z, when I removed the dipstick tube I could not find the seal. I used an oil resistant "O" ring & it seams to be working fine (no leaks).

just curious, where did you get it and do you have a P/N???
TIA

Tom
The dipstick seals can be accidentally pushed into the crankcase during dipstick install if it comes off the dipstick when it's removed, especially if the mechanic doesn't know it's there. I've had a couple of calls saying "mine didn't have one" or it "disappeared cuz I can't find it." O-rings would be easier to lose that way, but beats the heck out of nothing. If the bottom of the dipstick was "flared" maybe the o-ring would stay on better when removed again.
One note: I don't think the seal ending up in the pan is the end of the world.... probably won't hurt anything since it's below the windage tray & the pickup screen will stop it from getting into the pump.

tomtom72,
The o-ring I used was from an assortment I bought, they are oil/fuel resistant and I chose one that fit tightly on the dipstick tube & does not slip over the flange that stops the dipstick from being pushed deeper into the oil pan.
Finally finished the drawing for the dipstick seal and have sent it out for quotation. I'm not very optimistic that I can justify the cost of the injection mold for a small run, but always hopeful.

I'll bite also. I know I'll never use more than one in theory when I get around to doing my headers.....but I'd be interested to know what it would take to get this off the drawing board. If I can afford the price I'd be willing to pony up so we all would have an "out" so to speak....
Please, don't take me the wrong way....I'm not puttin' on airs. It's just the way I look at it is if we don't help ourselves, no one from the outside is gonna help us...JMHO:redface:

Daryl,
I won't know until the quotes come in. I sent requests to about 8 companies.
The LT5 is such a limited market that quantities are low. The more expensive tooling charges seem to be for items with the least parts sold, like the pan gasket. Annual requirements for pan gaskets, front cover gaskets and oil pump seals is almost nil. May take years to recover the development cost investment.
Neat thing is, I enjoy doing this. Nice corresponding with ZR-1 owners I've never heard of before, shipping overseas & answering questions. All the compliments on quality & service are most rewarding. Still, would be nice to get into the black one of these days:pray

When I put my SW headers on about a year ago, I replaced the dipstick grommet with a new one. Got it through my local dealer (who is notorious for heavy markups, i.e. Corvette tax) who charged me $4.15. Wish I had bought a few more at that price

I don't have all of the quotes in yet and only have 1 still out with any hope of a justifiable deal. I should know more next week, but I'm not optimistic.

$36 a pop. Phuck that. Jerry, if we are looking at those kinds of prices, I sure hope your numbers come out good.
The problem with the ebay item is it's a done deal when they are all gone...and we are right back here again.

The final quote I was waiting on came in. Relative to the other quotes, it great, otherwise, it sucks. This is a $5.00 part but being small actually makes it more expensive to produce. At the same time, I had a similar part quoted for the 405 Hp engines that is about 5 times bigger & it's less expensive to produce.
Here's what it is: All domestic shipping is $5.00/shipment, 1 or 100 seals
If I can pre-sell 145, the price is $17.50ea + shipping
If I can pre-sell 70, the price is $22.50ea + shipping
All depends on quantity. BTW, there is no "in-between" pricing , have to reach 145 to get the lower price.
Delivery time from order is appx 18 working days or almost a month.
John, you make a good point about the eBay sale, all being gone and right back to present square one.
I'm sure you guys will let me know what you think. Just don't shoot me though, I'm just the messenger.

Well folks, I hate like hell to do this, but it is necessary. The economy got to us. I am forced to sit on my car and have had only one offer and two inquiries. The offer I had was a lowball, which I accepted and then the guy bailed on me. One of the other interested parties wants a car with original paint, which mine has, but it has a couple imperfections so he doesn't want it now. Hmmm, must also want perfect original paint too. So guess I'm keeping it for awhile. If a person was to actually see the car I am sure they will buy it...anyway.
I have to reduce the number of seals I'm in for to one. I was in for 4. I'd bail on all of them except I started this so I feel I have to at least stay in it. That still leaves only 6 to go.
Sorry 'bout this guys.

The prototype Dipstick Tube Seal arrived a few minutes ago and it's a go! Very nice workmanship & very good fit. Very happy with the supplier & product.

Aw shucks Jerry, you shouldn't.
Well thanks for the kudos Mr. Downey, I appreciate what you have done for us. I did this for the brotherhood and no other reason. I would sure like to have the contacts you have (but not the phone bill), without them these things wouldn't happen. Here's one for ya too bro.
Just two jarheads working together for a common cause.

Jerry,
The guys in Japan want to order 10. He will try to contact you direct and if it is too much trouble for you to ship then we can add it to my order and I can ship to them.
Thanks!
It's not at all too much trouble to ship to them. I just can't ship internationally for the same price. I think the cheapest I can ship is about $13.00. I think we have email going on this...

The prototype Dipstick Tube Seal arrived a few minutes ago and it's a go! Very nice workmanship & very good fit. I tried it on one of the spare engines and it fits very nicely, especially compared to the original seal which was on the loose side and probably a "seeper/leaker." Very happy with the supplier & product.
OK... here's the plan. The following is a list of supporting pre-orders that made this possible. In order to keep the process simple, please email me jerry@jerrysgaskets.com and I will reply with the email address for you to use with PayPal payments and a mailing address for payment by check or money order.
Originally, with a pre-production group purchase of 70 pieces, the price was $22.50 + shipping. PRICE is now $22.00 ea, INCLUDING SHIPPING.
If you are not on the list, please feel free to jump in. Also, to be fair, the pre-order deal window will close 30May09. Afterwards, standard procedure for web orders will apply.
ALSO: PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR NAME & MAILING ADDRESS WHEN YOU EMAIL ME.
AND: YOUR FORUM NAME SO I KNOW WHO'S WHO.
