Hurricane Ike is comming right up our back door. All of the gas stations in my area are emty. So I'm just going to jack the car up as high as I can in the garage and hunker down. We are still 68 miles from the coast but fema says that Ike is no joke. We are looking at 85mph winds. I just hope I don't regret staying.

All of my years in Houston, the worst of the hurricanes was the lack of drainage. That being said we never had a problem with flooding in either of the houses we had.
Jack it up and ride it out.
And beware of the cottonwood trees.

Luckily our nieghborhood is only 8 years old so the oak trees are still small and all of the utility's and phone lines are under ground. I was born and raised in earthquake country San jose California. And now live in tornado/hurricane country. It will be interesting.:happy1:

Do you have a generator etc. You are still very likely to be without power for a while, even with underground utilities, all of the main power grid are on High Tension Lines all over the city, they will be subjected to the wind at its greatest strength. Power companies will be coming down from the north after the storm to get everything going again, but the last time I went through one, it was Aleisha in 1983 I think, and we lost power for a week or so. I remember my mom taking us up to Conroe just to get Ice and a Coke. I was just a kid then. You neighborhood isn't likely to flood but stay away from I-10...it is usually turrned into a river. Or, if you want some insurance money get your car out there and flood that sucka.

I just saw Geraldo Rivera get knocked off his feet by a huge wave that came over the sea wall.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLZ7lK7-G_A The sea wall is 17 feet high and the waves are already comming over it and destroying businesses that are on piers. The winds are starting to pick up where I am.

She's sleeping very well right now. Wow! that was a serious hurricane. I've never been through anything quite like that before. About 3:00am it was rockin and rollin out side. It didn't matter how air tight the front door was. Any wind that passed through the cracks of the door sounded like somebody was blowing through a Kazzoo really loud. My garage door was breathing in and out. There were about 6 toads and a bunch of gecko lizards taking refuge inside the garage. Any store front roofs that were sheetmetal were tore up or just gone. Quite a bit of damage to strip mall roofs and store front signs just blown away. Quite a few oak trees ripped out of the ground. And can you believe through all that we didn't loose power once. Our house came through without a scratch.:hello:

The Woodlands has no power. The west side of the storm missed New Braunfels by 50 miles; it's sunny and breezy here now.
