Should be cool to see them dicing it up with Porsches and Ferraris.

To me it means we are stepping down a class and wont be racing the AM's anymore. They were good competition, and the Porche couldn't come anywhere near the Vette in the GT1 class. I like the Vettes position on top, why stop?

I figure if anyone knows, you do. What's up w/ the switch from GT1 to GT2 during the season next year? (Why do I feel disappointed by the move?:)

They only race the Aston's at one race. Most of the season the Corvettes are racing no one.
Also, a GT2 program presumably should be cheaper, and lord knows GM could use the cost savings. It might even spur some privateer teams, which could be cool. Seeing 'vettes race 'vettes would be nice.

Paul, I had solid heard rumors about the move while in the paddock at Mosport and Detroit. The move to GT2 is just a ramp up for 2010. It is also a way for GM to get away from spending 1.0 million per car to build for GT1. Going to GT2 will be roughly a cut in half.
Gm spends 1.0M per car (They run 2 cars and have back ups at PM)
Each race weekend costs 1.0M with 10-12 races
Le Mans in France, I forget the cost, but it's high as they are there for a month.
Practice sessions, they have a private session at Road Atlanta in the next couple of weeks.
Costs add up.
What do they have to show for it, basically a two car race, with the occasional privateer AM racing. With the drop to GT2, they pick up against Porsche, Ferrari, Panoz, AM, Viper. That's a lot of competition. No matter what group they run in, guaranteed they will be on the podium. All the guys work hard and want to win.
I am glad they will still be running GT1 when I go to France for next years 24 hour race.

what are the changes to the car? Anyone know the details? I hope the GT2 car can still kick the crap out of all the others. What is the deal with the 2010 season?

What about drivers, will the current group be willing to drive GT2?

Car will be based upon the stock frame, less suspension and brake modifications. Less aero work. The big kicker is smaller cubes.
2010, ACO and FIA realized GT1 is a dying category merge GT1 and GT2 together form one class and create new rules structure. Rules have not been released, so I have no clue.
2009 schedule:
GT1
Sebring
Long Beach
Le Mans France
GT2
Selected races unkown

I agree. It would be better than waiting for AM to show up just to have someone to race against. Watching #3 & #4 race each other gets boring.
