View Full Version : Poll- How many currently need a windshield

As many of you are aware, there are aftermarket windshields that are in stock overseas, but the American vendor has not followed through on the purchase. I am doing a quick poll to determine genuine interest in buying these windshields at a significantly reduced cost than what was paid in the recent past(ballpark figure of $1,500.00). So in addition to the poll, also list your location so we can get an idea as to the regional locations for shipping and pick up.

Mine is fine, and if it did break would be replaced with a base windshield.

I'm of the same opinion. It would have to be a REAL bargain for me to consider it.

I agree if it was a real bargain..

I do not need one now. That said if I should need one I would prefer being able to purchase a replacement that is similar to the original. But $1,500.00 is a bit out of my league I would at that price point opt for a standard C4 replacement.

Mine didn't break, but I replaced it with a base one for $220 installed. Stored the old one.

I bought one from KW when they were $995.00 + shipping. It took me over a year to get it. Now it sits in the crate in my garage because I have alot of money in it. I don't want to put it in because I drive my car to work and such a fair amount and I'm afraid it will get chipped or worse. So, if I knew then what I know now I wouldn't buy one, just put in a standard C4 windshield if I need to. Just my $.02.

Yes, several of us have spoken to them over the years. My attempts were unsuccessful several years ago. They have essentially washed their hands of the ZR-1 windshields. :(

 I dont know about your insurance but mine covered everything for a new one. Inspecter looked at the car to verify it was equipt with a solar tint and agreed to replace it with one. They also sprung for the install kit. FYI I have Country Insurance.....

I have a stock corvette glass
I would be interested in a ZR-1 glass for a good deal
$1500 probably too much

I would get one, but it would have to be a good price.......

Unsure about $1500. Did he offer it @ $995 last year? ARGH!

I'm interested but it is going to have to be a good price. The former price with tripled shipping costs (from first estimates) was wayyyy too high. Have them all delivered to David Johnson's house and we can pick them up there (after he installs them)....

Like all of you I would buy one if he price was a little more reasonable. I do have a chip on the passenger side and expect it will crack one of these days. Fortunately my insurance will cover it.

A new ZR-1 owner here. I can't answer the poll at this time because, I'm unsure of the choices...large/small cutout. I assume the cutout size is refering to the radar detector location at the bottom of the windshield. I have a '94...does anyone know if I would have a large or small cutout? What are the dimensions of the two cutouts? I'm interested in a new windshield, I have discoloring around the edges (de-lamination) and a quarter size chip. Like most others have noted, $1500 is a bit on the high side, when a standard C4 would make due.

Don't know the dimensions but yours would be the small cutout. I think 90-91 had the large.

I was doing the poll in a hurry and should have added the years/dimensions. I will edit the poll now that you brought it to my attention.

The large cut out is for 1990-1992 with a 4" x 10" radar cut-out and the small cut out is for 1993-1995 with a 4" x 5" radar cut-out.

i'd be interested in a couple, maybe three. i talked to Kurt a while back & i think he said he'd sell them to me for $1200.00 each if i got two. money aside...you guys know the deal with K.W., you never have a comfortable feeling when dealing with him. i've dealt with him a little but...never quite sure where his head is at:icon_scra  .
BTW the poll doesn't work if you want to click off BOTH windshields, FYI.

Do you have any idea as to how many of the windshields are currently sitting in Brussels? (I think it is Brussels...) I read the original post about Kurt White not paying for them, but I don't think a quantity was ever mentioned.

They are in Finland, only said a bunch of unpaid ones for both size cut outs.

I did not negotiate prices with the vendor, just asked for a ballpark with shipping, and knowing there are several variables such as currency rates, customs, etc. If there is enough serious interest we can get a definitive price for at least a regional location pickup.
They do not want to drop ship individual windshields, otherwise that would be a perfect solution having everyone buy them directly.

Thanks for the heads up on the poll, I didn't consider there may be a few who would buy more than one.

I wouldnt mind getting one but the delam isnt enough to go through the hassle of replacing it.I did this on my 84 years ago, what a pain in the a$$.http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a136/FLYTYM/Corvette054Small.jpg

Do I need one for my 90......yes, chips & sand blasted and oh yea, some strange delam...streaking laterally. The sand blasting makes it tough to see at night.:(

Can I afford it......not really, I spent the budget on the headers. I hasten to add that the price seems fair to me though, all things considered. Thanks Z Factor for your efforts!

I guess I could call my Ins. agent as I do have 100% glass on the policy; but then I figure I'll pay for it over some yrs of policy price increases due to me putting in a claim....maybe I should weigh the outright cost to what happens to my policy price over time & see which is cheaper....:sign10:

The only thing stopping me from whipping out the credit card is that I use the car too damn much and I'll proly ruin a new one in the same 3 yr time frame. It's a shame as it was perfect when I bought the car back in 12/04, and I ruined it! Oh, and I'll miss that distinctive tint when I buy a regular C4 glass. It looks cool from the outside of the car, kind of like Darth Vader's Vette.

I didn't vote because I feel I'm not a great example of a careful ZR-1 owner. However, I'll keep an eye on this thread because if I come into some extra $ maybe I'll indulge my ego......just gotta have that different tint to stand out from the rest of the C4's....

I am probably one of them. Like mentioned before, I was in on the 995.00 deal. My windshield is sitting in the crate still. My windshield has delam, but i can still see out it just fine. Mine may go up for sale some day. Crate is just taking up space. Bought it in case the one in the car breaks or the delam gets real bad.

As an update, the windshields are still in Finland and available.
The price should be a little better due to the strengthening of the dollar compared with a few months ago. However costs aside, the biggest issue I foresee is still getting the individual windshields to the members who want them. A few regional drop off points would probably be the best way to go with individual members either picking them up, or making their own shipping arrangements.

So if anyone is still interested, post your intentions.

I need a large cut-out. Just had my nearly virgin, almost no delamination windshield damaged, and am currently negotiating with my insurance company. Based on other's experience, I'm cautiously optimistic that they will cover the expense for a ZR-1 correct windshield. If so, the problem then becomes one of availability.

IF you can even find one and someone will sell it not sure if they would go for the $2000+ probable cost for a perfect one. I have one, but its not perfect.

Hello and welcome to the forum.:handshak:

I suspect if you tell your agent to find an OEM would take a long time and be $3k or so, they would gladly pay for an aftermarket one around half that. The trick is getting them here at a reasonable price, then getting them picked up at a location for people in the region.

Hi hp2burn good luck on your windshield quest.

Many moons ago I used to live at 712 Via del Monte --- How much do ya think that home would sell for now?

My Dad got a job x-fer to Detroit so instead of my surfboard for my b-day I got a pair on Ice Skates!!! LOL and learned all about frostbite on the toes too!

My parents sold the place in 1969 for a paltry 50K !

I said I need one, but it is only for cosmetic purposes so a purchase is going to need to wait until my stocks start rebounding. It's original and has some delamination and pitting that's to be expected on a driver with age.

Thanks,

A couple of years ago Kurt White had windshields made in Europe. I paid for one, never recieved the windshield, just the rubber molding. I guess they were not packed correctly and most of them were damaged in shipment. No money refunds just the memory of losing money in the purchase. Buyers beware!

Get in touch with Kurt and ask for that money back. That is the right thing to do and I hope he will.

Jim Voter and myself purchased another "batch" of windshields from that European source and have a few left if you are interested. (both early and later model style)

Sending you a PM

I have one of the reproduction windshields with the small 93-95 cutouts $1600 brand new, but you have to pick it up in Pittsburgh, I have no way to transport it.
