I just installed an oil catch can in my Z, some posts indicate you need to add Steel Wool, or a steel scratch pad to the container in order to capture the oil from the vapors.

If you use steel wool, would it not pull parts into the intake???

Need your thoughts!

Thanks

Sure after it rusts first. I would not use it as Ive seen too many body filler rust hackjobs using steel wool in the past. has to be a safer way. IMHO

on the ones i build i stuff them, & i mean STUFF them, maroon scotchbrite pads i cut up. it's kinda crazy, i packem' in ssooo tight yet they still breathe great. works good.

What is the purpose of a catch can on an LT5 out of curiosity? How did you mount it, stock stroke?

Well, if the steel wool rusts in the catch can, ya gotz more troubles than worrying about steel wool!:jawdrop:

The air volume thru the line is relatively low (read: won't suck up steel wool, I recon), and the wool breaths so well I doubt it would impede the small air flow very much - if any - thus not get "sucked up". And, I've see the odd breather cap (back in the day) stuffed w/ course steel wool w/o problems. That said, mebby Scotch Bright (sp?) would be the better option?

FWIW,

P.

I am trying to reduce the amount of oil in the plenum, I have a stock stroke, but it seems that there is alot of oil in the plenum, which means it is making it into the combustion chamber. We'll see how it works.

I am actually using a Husky Air compressor filter for the can.

Just a thought on the "steel wool"......usually the local hardware store has s/s steel wool or bronze wool.....that stuff will not rust or fall apart.

Lee, I believe Pete modified an aluminum (or SS?) air-brush paint canister, I wanna say....Something like that. I too noticed oil draining out of the plenum, which prompted me to ask about a catch can last winter...I just ain't got 'rountoit yet, I recon! Prolly do it this winter, I suppose. Could be a little item to add to the "ZR-1 cottage industry", no?

Purpose is to catch the oil of course!

Now, I know you next question is going to be, why are you catching oil. Well oil will pool in the plenum and get sucked down into the runners. Too much oil and you get detonation issues.

I was doing it to reduce emissions, and save the environment.

I will post some pics, I need to mount it and shorten the lines. I ran the line from the back of the plenum, over to the booster, down the inner fender, and into the front bumper area. Then back up the same way, the filter is black so it blends in....nothing too spectacular, any idiot could do it....this one did.:hello:

i was under the impression F.I. and large stroke applications typically generate more cranckase pressure to use these...Learn something new every day.

LGAFF, nice of you to save the environment like that. Make sure and drain your oil down the toilet next time to save water.

Here is the catch can, I still need to make a bracket, and cut the lines to fit.......so keep the smart*** comments to a minimum......Jeffvette where's the kit for this?

If people would open up their plenum they would show an interest, the Exxon Valdez dropped less oil than my plenum does!

It is debated if this does any good but I will give it a try. Haibeck says it does no good, I have heard various opinions. Also curious, will the line collapse under the vacuum load? I am running 3/8 fuel hose.

Line should not collapse. 3/8 is pretty thick tubing.

Lee,i told you not to tell.
Mine serves 2 purposes

I use something similar to what XFire51 (Dominic) posted.

I put mine where my battery used to be (battery moved to the back)

I drain it every so often.
The reason some say it doesn't work, they are installing it wrong.
My plenum is dry.

I'd be more interested in one that installed cleanly with minimal cutting up of factory stuff.

As said, the amount of oil that pours out of the plenum is kind of frightening! :jawdrop:

Is that a shot at my work......Actually once the lines are trimmed the canister will be invisible you can't see the logo, etc on the filter and the lines are hidden as you can see in the engine shots......and there is no cutting of factory set up.

jeffvette or flyin ryan/I have a like problem with the new twin turbo fidanza vette that I just drove home from cleveland/It has carbon fibre valve covers ls2 block 415 inches/ on the valve covers it has vents to relieve crankcase pressure, from the turbos I guess/anyway it drips onto the headers and burns leaving a ugly smell when I stop. Not a large amount, just annoying.Do you think running a hose to a vented can, remotely mounted would work?Too bad I didn't have this one on the dyno,it is really loud,as the turbos are mounted were the mufflers were.Drove great comming home 2500 miles in three days with lots of side trips. .thanks for your thoughts/diamond zr1 //joe

Joe, you should probably be running two. One for the PCV system and then the other coming directly off the valve cover on the passenger side. There really is no room on the driver side, which is one reason why GM brought it around from the driver side on the stock cars.

Give me a shout or shoot me an email and we can get something figured out for you.
