Hi, have any of you guys used either one of these?

http://www.moates.net/product_info.php?cPath=49&products_id=127
or
http://aldlcables.com/sc/details.asp?item=aldlobd1u

Should I spend the extra 20.00 on the first one? Or, will the second one do the same thing as the first, and as well as the first?
Thanks,
Mike

I have the older Moates one, before it became "Extreme". It works great for me.

One nice thing about the Moates one, if you wanted to use it on the '94-95 style connector, you could add that for $30, and re-use the "Extreme" part.

Thanks, Bob. The thing I don't understand is if the 2nd one works with just a cable, than why does the Moates cable need the other piece?

The Moates one just happens to be a two-piece. One handles the usb part and has a switch for resistance. The other can be changed depending on what OBD connector it is hooking up to. That's just how they chose to do it. I don't really know the exact reason.

The Moates one has the USB to Serial stuff in the little box, and the cables are replaceable.. (I have seen cables break)

the other one I have (I got it used) the components for the USB interface are in the USB connector (with a Jumper for certain cars) if it were me buying new, I would get the Moates piece

Now, my question to you is, what software are you planning on using?

That makes sense. If the cable itself went, a replacement would be 30.00 as opposed to 60.00 for the other one. Also, I was going to try Datamaster. Thanks Jeff.

How do you like scanner pro? I don't think I've heard of that one. Any thoughts on Datamaster?

Datamaster is nice but you have to pay for each flavor of car.. so like me I currently have an L98 and LT5 I would need 2 copies.

I have tried it on my 89 though. I primarily use Ease, but I bought that 8 years ago and upgraded it a few times. with Ease I have capability of any GM OBD1 and OBD2 so that is the quickest. When I bought Ease it was $300 for OBD1 and the only other program was avail, other then a DOS based one with I forget the name of.

ScannerPro with be incorporated into TunerPro for a one stop solution for tuning. Someone made a Definition file for the 90-91 L98 corvette and I took it and changed it for the LT5. I think I have it 95% working there are probably still some issues, but I have been so busy doing other things, scannin is the last thing I am thinking of at the moment.

ScannerPro is nice as it does many OBD 1 cars and is FREE.. Free is always good..

Great info Jeff. I think I'll give Scannerpro a shot.
